Red Letter Media Investigates: The Villisca Ax Murder House

Halloween has come early this year! Today, in fact! That's right we were going to wait until October to release part two of our Villisca Ax Murder House investigation, but hey, it's Saturday! Krebs Gorlon is away on vacation so it's me Rich Evans typing this description because this video is serious business. In 1912, eight people (six of whom were children) were killed in this tiny house in Iowa by some kind of lunatic with an ax. The killer was never brought to justice so either their souls aren't at rest OR there is an evil entity in the house OR it is just an empty house. Here it is folks, our investigation video. Presented to you in all it's non-glory. As promised, nothing was faked and all "evidence" is presented in a rational and scientific fashion and we discuss as we go. Is there a little dramatic flair in editing? Sure. But it can't be too boring, but we promise this is the most honest paranormal investigation video you'll ever see. In fact, we made this for non-clicks. Please DON'T like and subscribe. Enjoy!!!!!

Finally. More content!

Here comes Rich wearing the Salt Vampire mask, pretending to be a spooky ghost

Emily Hall

I've been so looking forward to this! Bring on the ghosties!

Nada Leona Sheppard

I just put a pan of brownies in the oven and thus popped up. Perfect timing!

WHAT I THOUGHT THIS WAS COMING IN OCTOBER

Tom McGraw

it’s here! it’s time! i can’t wait for spooky ghosts

Jeremy _

I like the theory that in a supernatural universe, a dead person could generate both a zombie AND a ghost. And the ghost would probably be hovering around embarrassed by their zombie-self's boorish behavior.

Nathan Mills

Always knew Freddie had psychic capabilities

Mojo

Just when I was looking for some spooky Halloween content to watch! Perfect timing.

Kellic

And....here....we....go!

Manuel Johnen

Hey, is that Ax Murder House a cousin of the Amityville House...? It has the same eyes...

Dusk Haunters

Mike paid $800 for his ghost toy... That's the only scary thing about this video...

Kendi Lawton

Aw! Church was a perfect supurrmodel!

David S

We’re through the looking glass here people.

Brian Bridges

If y'all wanna do another ghost investigation, I'll keep tuning in for it. You don't even have to make it a strict investigation, just turn on the cams in all the rooms and spend the evening there filming a Best of the Worst with all your ghost gear running in the background, lol

Sean Brombosz

I really enjoyed this! I appreciate the honest approach, and it made the evidence, as little as there was, all the more compelling. I hope this gets the reception it deserves because, personally, I would love to see more of this. However, I understand the concern with 'chasing the high.' I loved what you’ve created and would love to see more, but I would also understand if this was indeed the last episode of the series.

Sean Brombosz

Yes! What a lovely compromise, especially if they didn't want to fully invest in investigating.

Boogie

That last image was haunting, it will stay with me for the rest of my life, like the final shot from Blair Witch.

Erik Sheedlo

Rich and Jay have been confirmed as secret brothers. Or just falling apart to look very similar. I'm going with secret brothers.

Frazzled Doo

That was a Fun watch.. Soo..who’s kid can’t be trusted in the studio? Did you ever find the mini recorders?

Kellic

The phones should have been in airplane mode while inside the house. :P

CSL

Correction: We paid for Mike’s $800 ghost toy.

Dusk Haunters

I like to think my Patreon subscription goes to paying Jay's extravagant grooming ♥️

Funky Ferret Studios

Great episode guys! compelling in the earnestness of the presentation

Kellic

I want a UFO investigation. Where its pretty much the guys out in a field getting shit faced talking about UFO movies.

John O

So, how much do we need to give you guys to do this again?

Bill Wilson

So, this awesome intro was only made for a one-shot? I don't want to believe! Any chance that last, chilling picture will be made available in high definition? Truly, Sasquatches be encroaching on suburbs.

Jeff Kleist

I really hate this kind of fraud, the only way I want to see something like this again is if you call up to Toronto and get Dan Aykroyd

Elizabeth Thompson

Your comment is very relatable, if we’re all honest something has touched us all at a highly emotional time of time of life. That’s why artists are remembered. And I hope everything in your life will turn in a way to give you happiness and peace

Elizabeth Thompson

I think the real ghosts are the friends we made along the way.

Elizabeth Thompson

Probably the scarecrow that comes to life in the studio and steals recorders and VHS tapes of horrible movies

Thomas Hoerauf

That shot of the cat is damn good. I'm kinda jealous.

Carl Watkins

"What's a shark?" - Dead kids from 1900s Iowa

Frazzled Doo

Omfg.. why did they even have them in proximity? Amazon has that anti-RF material you can shield&prevent shit like that from being potentially the biggest fuckup of RLM GhostFuckers.

Frazzled Doo

Consume and Chew your media slowly this represents the last of The GhostFuckers.

Frazzled Doo

Jack and The ScareCrow.. prolly’ one of the most memorable ‘Oh wow’ moments I actually felt something close to a “JumpScare”

Seth Hurley

I really appreciate this new type of content from RLM. There is even evidence of something that's legitimately creepy. Some random thoughts: It seems like interesting activity happened around Rich or Freddie Williams, both of whom were friendly rather than confrontational. If I were a ghost—especially a murdered one—I’d probably avoid engaging with someone hostile. Their calm demeanor might make them more approachable. I’ve been working in science for nearly 20 years, and I even have a PhD. I’m a skeptic by nature, but I have to admit I had a paranormal experience when I was younger. It's a long story, but when I was a teenager, I saw something I still can't explain—a luminescent, humanoid figure standing in a family member’s room late one night. That person always kept their door closed, but when I woke up around 3 a.m., I noticed the door was open, which was unusual. Inside the room stood the glowing figure. It wasn’t moving, but it terrified me. I put on my glasses and pinched myself to make sure I wasn’t dreaming, but the figure was still there. In a panic, I hid under my sheets. After what felt like an eternity, I peeked out again—the figure had disappeared. Strangely, I hadn’t heard any footsteps, despite living in a house with creaky floors, and our dog—who always barked at strangers—was silent. When I finally gathered the courage to get up, I turned on the hallway light, and another strange thing happened. The light didn’t flood the hallway as usual; it emitted in a series of halos. Otherwise, everything else seemed OK, but I barely slept that night. I’ve never had another paranormal encounter, and I still can’t explain what I saw. I think that's why I appreciate videos like this where people are approaching paranormal things more objectively/skeptically without the BS.

Eileen Herbert

The minute Rich said "I'm going to play a song" I KNEW it was Baby Shark.

Peter Varga

today is the spookiest day of the year, the -3rd of October

andrew

What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?

Katie Horrocks

Can we all take a moment to appreciate how wholesome it is that Jay went out of his way to take an amazing picture of that absolutely majestic cat?

andrew

June 1912. You should’ve asked what they thought about the sinking of the Titanic. I hear it was big news back then.

andrew

This was great. If you revisit, try to stay through the night so that you are in the house at the time of the murders, and bring an ax and bacon.

Nada Leona Sheppard

This was so much fun, lads. I definitely would love to see more RLM Investigates. Concerning the orb you pointed out in the kids room that touched the Rem Pod; was that something you put in, Mike, or was that original footage?

Amanda B.

At 5:57 Mike awkwardly paused to rip a fart.

Jeremy _

Creating Rempod Lezar

Jessica

Mike, what true crime / paranormal podcasts do you listen to? The world wants to know.

IndyHannahJones

If you really want to provoke the ghosts, cook some bacon in the house. I'm sure the fact that the murderer raided their fridge really added insult to injury.

Not like the other ghouls

Rich connecting with the spirits of the family by sharing his love of baseball and playing music for the kids is the most wholesome thing.

Art Webb

@redlettermedia MIKE HOW DID YOU NOT REVERSE THE BABY SHARK AUDIO?! It’s clearly sdrawkcab

Silio Martinez

@redlettermedia i heard rich had to mortgate nannoos house 3 times in order to pay for the trip

J21balls

I would love to see more of this sort of thing. Just watching you hang out, doing random shit.

David Arcaine

I would be interested if they wanted to take another crack at it with all their equipment staying passed 3am in the dead of winter. Fun video though!

PunKat

I loved this video as much as I expected to and more. Any chances for a part two or perhaps some outtakes? 👀

Mudflap

From what I can tell this already has a very positive reception but let me throw in my own praise for this vid- absolutely loved it. Can't wait for more RLM investigates- and I would kill for more of the paranormal investigation type stuff like this. I'm confident in saying there's a lot of us like you, Mike, skeptics who really wanna believe. RLM and this type of investigation is just a god send to our kind. And honestly- you're living the dream Mike! I remember when I was a wee lad (and even now in all honesty) my dream job was paranormal investigation of any kind. I wanted (and still want) nothing more than to see or experience something that modern science and man can't explain to me. But I also believe it's entirely possible that sort of thing is just completely impossible and any "evidence" is just staged. I wanted to be a true investigator- Let me live vicariously through you, Mike! As for Jay and Rich, god bless for being patient with people like Mike even if he is your friend lol, I'm sure my own friends would make endless fun of me for this shit too but also stay by my side just as you have. And it's what makes them the real thing!

Nick Kerr

I thoroughly enjoyed this. I’m down for more videos like this!

Nick Kerr

Can you guys use your “tons” of Patreon money and investigate Loch Ness? You can use Rich’s laugh for sonar.

Shane

*insert Longlegs spoilers here*

redlettermedia

Hi Everyone!!! I discovered the orb (light anomaly, ghost, etc) touching the REM pod antenna in post-production AFTER we did our recap. We wanted to shoot that while it was all still fresh in our minds. I combed through all the footage and audio looking for EVPs or anything odd, but somehow missed that!! Nothing was added in post (except for music and brightening of the images) That actually happened. I don't know why the REM pod started beeping just then. Was it something paranormal? Was it a well-timed floating piece of dust? It's unfortunate because the other scene showed how the REM pods are unreliable. A less honest person would have cut out that whole attic REM pod debacle and just kept in the ghost in the crib bit, but I wanted to show everything that happened, even equipment snafus.

redlettermedia

I agree about the approach after the fact. I've heard a lot of stories about an evil entity and hostility. I tried both approaches. Provoking in the attic and a more calm approach in the children's bedroom.

Jodi Leonforte

If you guys want to get more paranormal activity, yes, film late at night in the early hours of the morning, and incorporate spiritual activity. In the middle of the day there's a different spiritual energy than at night. Some say it's about "the veil" being thinner then, between where we are and where spirits reside. And as for spiritual activity, recite scripture, sing hymns, offer to pray for them...these would have all been things familiar to an American family from the early 1900s. The church and faith in general were much more central to the family unit and individuals back then. They're not going to care as much about sports, cars, toys, or silly stuff. It's been said that as time goes on, spirits lose more and more of their earthly sense. These are all things from this world, which wouldn't be as relevant to them. Their souls and achieving rest, these are the things which resonate with them. So the sort of energy elevation that happens from spiritual engagement (singing, praying, etc) would likely excite the sprits. Certainly more than how well the Yankees are doing this season.

Peter Varga

it must be cold in there though in winter, without any heating. but the ghost did say "February".

Shane

That REM pod thing. Looks like it has a hollow bottom? It reacted to Jay’s hand going underneath. You put it down on an old floor. With floorboards. And drafts. Air pressure changes. And heat rises. Etc. Clever. The “randomness” of these expensive items is smart.

Dave Ruff

"Occam's axe," one of Rich's best one liners, cruelly trampled on by Mike and Jay

Randomuser2018

These were fun and I would enjoy more of these now and then! One of the things that bugs me is the absolute vague waffly BS about how these detectors “work”. Like why 2000 words only? Who chose those words? Couldn’t they have easily composed that list to be as vague as possible so open to interpretation and make sure plenty of spooky words included in that list. What would be amazing is to get real serious scientists to tear these things down and see how they work and / or create their own fit for purpose so it was more rigorously scientific and trustable.

Randomuser2018

It’s entirely possible the antenna had a static build up on it that attracted the dust to and also triggered it.

Juan Calvo

If there is a next time, maybe bring a plastic axe with you for provocation (plastic and fake for safety concerns). And show the ghost children something more relatable (hopefully something that won't get RLM canceled).

Andrea Johnson

I haven't watched these yet bc if any of them other than Mike believe in paranormal stuff I'm going to disappointment-poop my pants so bad and who's got time for that?? :(

Nada Leona Sheppard

A thought I've always had with Rem Pod footage is, how sensitive are they to insects? If a spider in a dusty attic crawled onto a Rem Pod, would it activate? Or a house fly? So there is the possibility that what you caught was a small bug. But, you would think that it would catch on the camera at least, or Rich would have heard it, sitting as close as he was to the Rem Pod, if it was a fly.

bootblacking

In the interest of scientific inquiry, you should test the battery that drained by allowing it to record again. Rule out the possibility of a failing battery.

DonMac

That house has Amityville Horror house windows, so it's clearly haunted. I'm glad you guys were able to Get Out of there.

Goobins

I would donate to a second RLM investigates channel if it meant we got more of this. Loved every second, great work.

Allison PM

I’m very impressed by the intro you made. It felt like a series. I’d still like to see you go through the Winchester mansion. That’s on my to do list too, but you could save me a trip.

Marvin Falz

What would be an incentive for the ghost of a murdered person to reveal itself? Something like, I help you find the murderer and bring him or her to justice.

Marvin Falz

Thinking back, I remember three occasions where I saw ethereal creatures. Two times inside a room, one time outside. The first time that happened I was shocked. The other two times not anymore. Not sure what I'm tryting to say here, except that I had experiences like this as well, and that I feel like they're not an expression of insanity, as I am able to objectively talk about my experience and nothing of bad consequence grew out of it. My approach is to just go about my day, and if such a creature was real and/or wants to talk to me or communicate in one or the other form then it will do that.

Marvin Falz

Yes, but maybe it's the same situation with animals. Animals are able to feel emotions of a human even when the human doesn't express the emotion visibly and audibly. Maybe Rich and Freddie were more relaxed?

howdy

excited for your next investigation where you bring 16 wide angle lenses, consult an astrologist, and anthropologist and a historian, litter the ground with shitty audio recorders, and still find nothing you deem compelling

Marc Richard Albert

I think we need a Mike tells (yells at) Rich what to do playing Phasmophobia with Jack and Jay also on their team. They wouldn't have to travel 8 hours to Iowa and would be safe from prostitutes.

Erin Gordish

Tell me more about the Hardee's Lot Lizard, please?

Robert Sager

TIL what a lot lizard was

Philip Gumpl

Guys seriously I would love more of these. This was a blast. If not....ANGRY, NERVE.

Adam Clark

Even if you dont do more of these, a release of some of the raw footage would be great!

TheSingingBush

I got an idea. I open the fridge, you hit the lights. Bats are attracted to lights

nickcoates64

Loved the investigation. And I suggest you go back to the house and investigate in FEBRUARY

Curtis Hay

I *need* more of this! With all of the ghost hunting shows that are incentivized to be fake, I really appreciate the honest evaluation of the evidence (or lack thereof).

Jeff Roper

What a waste of time. For shame.

Randomuser2018

It wasn’t made by them by the looks of the credits it was made by Noiselund which is lovely to see a two way collab going on!

Allison PM

I noticed that when I opened YouTube back and up and it started auto playing. Noiselund did a fantastic job.

uknown1100

You gotta investigate the Demon House from the famous movie Demon House next time.

casey

that's so weird. I live in the area of the kansas axe murder they talk about. I've known about it for decades, but I never knew it was connected to other murders. I think I was originally told someone in town killed them, but going by wikipedia that must have been a popular local rumor at the time. also the episode was fun even though I have zero interest in ghost stuff.

Danielle

This was a lot of fun and I’m glad Mike finally got to have his own ghost adventure! Thanks guys, can’t wait to see what you come up with next!

Michael Nuccio

You know, as far as that original footage of the door slamming goes, they kept talking about how hot and stifling and still the air was in there... I'm almost imagining that if it is practically a boiling vacuum in there, what if you could set up some sort of thermodynamic situation that would force the air in such a way to just slam that thing, almost like what's happening in the movie Backdraft?

Laura Elizabeth

Mike, please watch Paranormal Home Inspectors! Also loved this video. Really hope you also release a 'networkized' version that's heavily edited to mislead, complete with chilling sound effects.

Daniel Frank

Dumb question: What's the music at the end? It's the same music y'all use for your Halloween BotW...

Daniel Frank

Answer: Ghoul Disco by Mike Franklyn! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gbq71jwdBdo

Tyler McGill

This is my favorite episode

AlexD

I would like to see a montage with the footage from the ax murder house done like an episode form the terrible ghost hunting shows, with comedic effect when nothing happens.

Stefan Wilde

This was great! I would be positive about seeing more investigations once in a while

Alex Russell

The paper streamers was an awesome idea. Excellent investigation and analysis overall, guys!

cynthia

I will happily throw more money at you for more investigations, or at least a "proper" one / do-over!

Seth Hurley

It's interesting, when people talk about their paranormal experiences there is a good chance it sparks a good discussion. I have a friend who is down to earth, and he told me about a time when he was a kid and saw a mist appear before him that materialized into an old woman. it scared the living daylights out of him. That's the only paranormal experience he had but it is intriguing.
