This is the first episode of CSM that I actually really enjoyed despite the lack of action. The conflict here felt real. If a group of people who don't know each other that well are in this situation I would expect them to make that decision to sacrifice someone they barely know for a guaranteed escape. These guys don't seem like they are trying to be portrayed as heroes just people doing a job that sucks for money, revenge, or whatever else. I guess I will see everyone's motivations as the show goes on. The fact that Aki took that knife for Denji actually had so much more impact because of that. TBH I I've been sorta lukewarm on CSM until this episode because its just felt like the main selling point was cool animation. Don't get me wrong I like a good fight but these days you don't have to look that hard to find a show that has good fights and animation. The characters are alright so far but until this episode I felt like I didn't see anything from them that really stuck out to me. Although I will say the 5 second backstory Kobemi gave made no sense. She needed to make money so her options were sex work or devil hunting? There wasn't a McDonald's open down the block? lmao I had the same reaction as Power because that made 0 sense. There is probably more to it but as it was portrayed I fell like it didn't have the intended impact on me.

No spoilers, just drawing attention to one fact - Kobeni's parents would let only one child in their family go to college, and Kobeni says she had only two options for a job. Extrapolate from that what you will. More information will be forthcoming. As to being lukewarm on CSM's action, to be honest I don't consider this an action anime. My favorite parts of the first 4 episodes were the funny or somber moments, and the 5th was my favorite so far. In my opinion, this is an emotional drama more than an action show.

Consider exactly what jobs exist that would let someone whose never got a College Degree rapidly gain a large amount of money. Only something in the sex industry or something like Devil Hunting would pay such a large amount at a rapid pace. Kill a few devils? Bam, you are living pretty good. Sell some ass? You'll be safer than killing devils, but make money much slower. A McDonalds would take years.
