Cool tidbit on this episode: What they call “hit man style” is known as the Philly Shell. The Philly Shell was made popular by the Mayweather family. Floyd’s uncle Roger was deadly with it. It is a hard technique to use because you must be fundamentally strong, disciplined, fast, and if you’re lucky you also have a strong main hand. What makes it deadly is the positioning of the body: low lead hand can be hidden from a focused opponent, the main hand is kept high to protect from hooks, and the tight lead shoulder protects the chin and can be used to deflect punches. Miyata showcased this perfectly. He deflected a blow with the shoulder which essentially “cocked” his right straight while Mashiba’s left was still out leaving him wide open. Neat, isn’t it?
