To clarify a bit with the Chinese federation situation, you're right that Lelouch used his geass on the ambassador. That's how the black knights were able to stay at the embassy after escaping Babel Tower. Since the Chinese of course don't know about geass, Xinke (the Chinese guy wearing blue with the sword) assumed that the ambassador was working with the black knights in a way that would also benefit the Chinese federation. When it became apparent that the ambassador was just doing this for Zero, Xinke disposed of the ambassador since it of course appears like he was a traitor and didn't have his country's best interest in mind. After that, Xinke's took a neutral position and didn't offer help to the black knights but also didn't turn on them and help Brittania because he could see the potential of that being a beneficial relationship (hence C.C.'s comment about him not just being a skilled fighter but also a politician).

to make you feel worse even more, darlton actually had multiple adoptive sons that were war orphans and he raised them as his real sons. All those knights wearing those triangular masks are his adoptive sons. The man was a pretty good dude considering he didnt even discriminate against Suzaku and understands that no matter what race a person is, it doesnt make them any less able to produce results. His death was pretty sad considering he died seeing himself betray his own princess who he was loyal to. Fun facts lol

I also feel sorry for Rolo, it's like you said. He was simply raised like that and doesn't know any better. Lelouch's plan with Rolo is also understandable since literally everything he did and will do, is for Nunnally.
