Wider aperture of the lens and overexposing are a good way to give less importance to a busy background.
In this case Fanny was in shadow and is exposed correctly, whilst some of the background is burned out by the sun light and blurred out of focus.
This image was shot on the Sony A7, high ISO have created a noisy image, but still organic and acceptable.
The Leica Summicron still allow you to count the eyelasches despite the noise.

Photography is made with light, when you don't have enough you can't get maximum performances.
But I still prefer the natural and casual look of a noisy picture shot in natural light, to the perfect studio image made with strobes.
