OH. What is this, you may ask? Why, it's only MAYBE MY FAVORITE chapter set in the series? In a while?! For this volume for sure...and we're just getting started!  

Hua Cheng ACTUALLY fighting Bai WuXiang -- but he's not alone! Xie Lian plans to help him, but not before patching things up with his best bro duo! This chapter set was EVERYTHING -- but damn it, MXTX, that cliffhanger? I'm not sure I'm waiting until next week!

What a chapter set to welcome the New Year with 🤣 We get a better understanding of Mu Qing, Hua Cheng fighting Bai Wuxiang/Jun Wu, E'Ming's origins reveal, Hua Cheng's ascension, potential ship dynamics, and Wu Ming reveal all fraught with peril for our characters 😂 Loved all your fangirling over it. Xianle trio are truly the three idiots. And all three are so bad at communicating with each other! But yes Mu Qing and Feng Xin yap at each other like an old married couple. There were definite death flags for Mu Qing after his "f-f-friends" speech. Midst of a fight with Bai Wuxiang and Xie Lian and Hua Cheng still take a moment to be adorable telling each other to quit jumping off really high places 🤣 It's honestly a thing I do love about the fights in Tian Guan Ci Fu, though it does usually make the tension dissipate ever so slightly (for a few moments of relief at least). E'Ming showing off for his gege 🥺🥰 Hua Cheng playing baseball with Cuo Cuo as the ball and E'Ming as the bat 😆 My NSFW brain coming in to play again with Jun Wu's words about Hua Cheng being a "deceased man". Reminded me of a vampire novel series I love in which the protagonist coined a quote "Once you go dead, no-one's better in bed" 🤣 For Mo Dao Zu Shi the only action thing I can think is "off-screen" is the actual war. There aren't very many scenes about the battles until the very last fight. That's a mean headcanon about the butterfly Romania!!! 🥺 Kinda love it though 😅 No worries on not being able to wait, that was a mean cliffhanger to leave you at!

To talk a bit about Mu Qing, I think, although his behavior/personality is not the best, Xie Lian and Feng Xin didn’t necessarily help to assuage the feelings of seeing Mu Qing as just a servant rather than their friend. Feng Xin is understandable bc he and Mu Qing never really got along in the first place, but even then I don’t think Feng Xin thought the title of a servant wasn’t something to look down on, seeing as he was a bodyguard/servant of Xie Lian as well. But Xie Lian could have maybe said it out loud more that they were friends. Bc even when they were in hiding/exile in Book 4, all the chores was mainly pushed to Mu Qing (the finances, washing/mending clothes, cooking, etc.) So of course Mu Qing would see himself as nothing but a servant to them. BUT I also think it’s Mu Qing’s fault too for never speaking up and being honest with Xie Lian. He’s much too proud and very insecure, which could be from being someone born from lower class and the bullying from the other Xianle servants/disciples. Even guoshi treated Mu Qing badly, so it’s not too much of a surprise for Mu Qing to think he was always being looked down on. In the fandom, Mu Qing is probably on the same plane of likability as Jiang Cheng, where you either really like him or you really hate him. Personally, I love him but then again I like catty tsundere pretty boy characters so Mu Qing checks all the boxes for me. And I think your feelings towards him in the course of this story is completely valid bc MXTX wanted you to be suspicious of him, they wanted you to think he’s this self-centered guy who only thinks of ways to benefit himself. Bc it hits all the more when its revealed that Jun Wu uses the fact that no one would ever believe Mu Qing do something good and preys on Mu Qing’s fear of never being believed. So we can finally see Mu Qing’s honesty, that all he wanted was to be accepted and seen as an equal and as friend to Xie Lian. Anyways, I think all three of the Xianle trio had their faults and the situation as a whole was just awful to begin with during Book 4’s time, so I’m so glad they’ve finally cleared the air about it. I’m also so very glad that we got this moment with Mu Qing and that we are heading toward the right direction of reconciliation for these three old friends. Actually let me backtrack a bit, even though it was a very stressful situation, I couldn’t help but laugh at that whole scene with Mu Qing and Xie Lian where Mu Qing was down by the lava pool fighting off spirits and was about to end himself before he burned to death and Xie Lian is panicking trying to find a way to save him. Mu Qing keeps going to karate chop his head in and Xie Lian stops him and goes back and forth, like it was so comedic. Then Feng Xin swoops in to save the day. I’m a FengQing shipper btw bc I love old bickering married couples who dont even realize they’re old married couples hahaha But the way Feng Xin swooped in to save him and grabbed Ruoye felt like such a Tarzan moment. Like i’m imagining, when Xie Lian keeps mentioning how Mu Qing looks dazed bc he thought he was gonna die, there’s just like Careless Whisper or some other 80s/90s jam pumping in Mu Qing’s ears as he stares at Feng Xin who now has like a hero glowing halo around him. But that’s a fanfic for another day hahaha I looooove the Hua Cheng revelation that he ascended but jumped back down. When I first read this scene, the gasp I let out was so loud, and I literally took a solid two minutes just staring at the pages in shock. It’s like MXTX was thinking that there wasn’t enough surprises left, BOOM they hit you with Hua Cheng almost becoming a god. It really ties back, not only how every rumor/story about Hua Cheng from the beginning is all true, but how Mei Niangqing said Hua Cheng would either have the best of fortunes or the worst of misfortunes. I think, depending how you see it, Hua Cheng received both. He fought tooth and nail to be by Xie Lian’s side and endured many hardships/trauma. But he still managed to become one of the strongest Calamities/Ghost King. He managed to ascend as a ghost. He managed to find Xie Lian again after hundreds of years and even managed to win his heart. Truly, Hua Cheng was born to be a remarkable character. This was a great reaction, and, as always, I can’t wait until next week!!

THE FANGIRLING WAS REAL this set! 🙂I’m so glad y’all enjoyed it! But yes, these three – I’m so glad they finally all came together to make up! And yes, I was so worried MQ was going to die this chapter set! And MXTX is so good at that levity in the midst of battles – it reminded me of Pirates of the Caribbean when Will and Elizabeth are trying to get Barbossa’s attention. “I’M A LITTLE BUSY AT THE MOMENT!” Hilarious! And yesssss, E’Ming gets to show off! 😀 OH. MY. GOD. That quotation from a vampire series – well…I mean….let’s hope so for Xie Lian’s sake! ;) I will stand by my mean butterfly head canon! 😛 And yessss, these cliffhangers, I TELL YOU! Yes, great points on MQ – I feel throughout all the discussions we’ve teased out those various parts over the course of the series, but it’s nice to see it all come together with his character here in this chapter set and put the puzzle pieces together! MXTX really knows how to take a very dire situation and still find SOME way to give it levity! It’s so funny and I love it, like you noted! There’s definitely a part of me that would want FX and Jian Lan to work it out, but if he was with Mu Qing, that’d be okay – it’s not my favorite ship, but I can respect it! YES, that revelation that he ACTUALLY ascended but chose not to go was incredible! And yes, all the rumors have been true, in some variation. And that’s such a good point bringing up MNQ’s prophecy!
