**HORRIFIED HEADPHONE WARNING**

Well...I had many ideas at the start of this episode of where things were going...but the things I was convinced WOULDN'T happen...uhm...DID.

This episode was straight up PAIN and everything is coming together...just in possibly the worst ways possible? But maybe...maybe Leif or Thorfinn can do...something? This episode honestly left me SPEECHLESS...until the discussion.

I saw so many comments from viewers who did not like the Gardar/Arnheid mini-arc, but that arc was necessary for it gave a reason for Ketil to completely break. Early on we are shown a man who does not want to use violence to punish the two children who stole from him, but he felt absolutely betrayed by Arnheid. He was already dealing with the what happened with Canute and the potential of loss his farm, this betrayed pushed him beyond the point where he will now NOT submit easily to Canute and he is choosing violence, there is no other way for Ketil to go forward, he is a broken man. Without this mini-arc Ketil might have still been willing to submit to Canute more easily. Obviously, the Gardar/Arheid mini-arc also continued to show us the horrors of war/violence and slavery which are the main themes of the show. Thorgill (EP 11) "The more cowardly a man is, the less predictable his behavior. Also, Bug Eyes VA is Tachibana Tatsumaru, who is relatively new to VA work. He has voiced characters in Blue Period, Ao Ashi, Edens Zero, World Trigger and his "break through" character was Jin Mo-Ri from "The God of High School."

I knew this was coming but damn it was so much worse here than the manga with the added sound effects and all. Jeez.

"I saw so many comments from viewers who did not like the Gardar/Arnheid mini-arc" In my book this so called 'Farmland Saga' season and SPECIALLY this Arnheid arc has been as good as the show gets. As arresting as they are, something the last couple of episode haven't been is 'fun' or 'enjoyable' So I can't begrudge people who aren't into it or might think it's too much, People who signed up to this show because of Askeladd's 'land boat siege' or Thorkell's log throwing over the London Bridge aren't getting the deal they were promised. I'm a sucker for shows that are willing to betray their viewer's expectations for the sake of the story but along with that there's always gonna be people who go 'you know, I want to get off this ride'. Doesn't make them bad viewers, that scene was hard to watch. Hopefully we've paid the narrative price and things look up at least a bit brighter now, Leif is there, and a battle is coming and for once it might make both camps distracted enough Einar & Arnheid might slip through the cracks.

In a less sour note, that random farmer going 'how soon is soon' reminded me of The Smith's 'How Soon is Now' In my mind he's now Morrissey's ancestor. Which weirdly enough seems like an appropriate song to the episode & Ketil's toxicity.

Saku

They didn't like it because it was too brutal or just boring to them? I wonder if they even understood the point of the show that we've seen since episode 1 of season 1. The tragedy that happened to them is exactly one of the things the author wanted to show...

ketil reaction its actually expected from the average slave owner in fact. we judge him harsher because they sold us someone at the beggining that was different, so we had higher expectations of him. ketil its at the end an slave owner and he can be this evil. Ketil is a coward and fears conflict, he is possesive and can be cruel. he has good qualities as well, offered freedom to slaves for work, worked with slaves on his farm and he had a moral compass IF it was outside of his own life. thats what makes his actions so horrible.

Alex Kornejo

Yeah, we perhaps projected our own values on him when we saw him being kind, offer freedom to his slaves in exchange for work, and recoiling at punishing others, and might have thought 'oh he's just a good guy working within the culture he was put in' but after watching this episode a probably more truthful reading of his character is that he was a man that knew slavery was wrong and still engaged in it for his personal profit, if he didn't punish slaves it wasn't out of any moral rectitude of his but because he didn't have the stomach for it, and his so called kindness towards Arnheid was contingent on what he got out of her. Despite his crush to her the moment Einar found out Arnheid's heart belonged to Gardar he did everything he could to help them. On the other hand, despite all his so called affection for her the moment Ketil found out Arnheid's heart belonged to her husband (how dare she!) he beat her halfway to death. He became a lion killing cubs because there was a possibility they weren't his. And I said it last week but I'll say it again because I just can't get over it, it's just so heartbreaking that the whole extent of Arnheid's dreams and wishes got reduced to being the mistress and bearing the child of that kind of a man.
