Sorry, I was apparently a bit misleading in my comment two weeks ago. Isayama initially submitted to "Shounen Jump", published by Shueisha, and they had absolutely no interest. He later tried again with the second biggest manga publisher, Kodansha, and the junior editor there, Kawakubo, saw potential and worked with him to improve his art, helped him submit to a contest, etc. In the end, Isayama got his chance in a new spinoff of Kodansha's "Shounen Magazine", called "Bessatsu Shounen Magazine". It's a competitor of Jump and Shueisha, not an offshoot. Kawakubo, FWIW, is now the editor in chief of Shounen Magazine, the second biggest manga magazine after Jump. [ETA] And "Bessatsu Shounen Magazine" is not a seinen magazine, as the name suggests it publishes shounen manga just like "Shounen Jump" (although it does publish more off-beat shounen manga). I don't remember if Isayama actually submitted the protoype for AoT then, he might have brought something less dark. Although dark and gory stuff isn't that uncommon in shounen manga (Devilman, Fist of the Noth Star etc), Jump was mostly going for more light stuff at the time, although there was black comedy like 'Nougami Neuro' and of course "Death Note" in mainline Jump around that time. And, Shounen Jump (almost) never does monthly titles. The monthly stuff is a separate magazine, called "Jump SQ/Jump Square", and that's where "Seraph of the End" is published, and everything there is monthly unless there's a hiatus/pause (There used to be a "Monthly Shounen Jump", but it was cancelled and relauched as SQ). The main "Shounen Magazine" is also weekly, this is where "Ace of the Diamond" was originally published, but they have two monthly spinoff magazines, "Monthly Shounen Magazine" and "Bessatsu Shounen Magazine". So even in the "Shounen Magazine" world, it could have easily run in a weekly magazine, and under Shueisha there are monthly magazines as well. I do certainly agree that "Weekly Shounen Jump" probably wouldn't have been a great fit for AoT.

Ooohhh, thank you for that clarification! That's so cool that the editor moved up on the ladder! I'm really glad that Isayama had someone believe in his work and encourage him to keep trying to get it published! I'm glad that worked out! :) Thanks for the info and comment! :D
