**HEADPHONE WARNING**

Y'all, we had a nice, calm, relaxing Episode 9 -- which is great, because this episode throws us RIGHT BACK INTO THE FIRE! Holy cow!

We meet Heckel, our slimy but lovable thief, and some side characters who display not only the terror of how Johan takes advantage of the psyche of others, but how our actions have consequence...but also, typically have meaning behind them as well. The parallels, connections, and intrigue of this episode was STELLAR! And we're only about a seventh of the way through...I'm so excited to talk about this one!

Heckel is such a delightful cad, great minor character. Really looking forward to seeing episode 11, one of my favorite arcs! I should add that what I love about this anime is that it shows the humanity of characters we would otherwise dismiss, scoundrels like Heckel who are in it for number one, or political terrorists like the client duo - and the reverse is true, that characters on the good guy's team aren't always going to be perfect either. Monster really avoids the protagonist syndrome.

Between this episode and the last one, it really makes me emotional to see how Tenma's kindness and innate goodness continues to have an effect on people who are complete strangers to him and are touched/have their lives in some way changed by said kindness, meanwhile Tenma himself slowly is rotting away on the inside and hardening himself more and more due to what's happened to him and what he's going through, becoming more and more different from who he was at the start of the series :' ) which is likely what Johan wants, to corrupt him, or at least it feels that way. Something that stands out to me is how upset/emotionally affected/desperate he was when Maurer died, just a few episodes ago, compared to here, where he literally has no reaction to seeing a man die in front of him by his own hands. I know he didn't form a bond with this dude like he did with Maurer, but still, it shows how much he's already changed just in these 5 months imo 💔 burnt cinnamon roll indeed. And yet... as you pointed out, while he was not moved to help the terrorist guy while he was trying to justify his terrorism to him, what finally did make Tenma decide to save him was his simple human desire of not wanting to die, which is a sentiment Tenma has probably heard a lot throughout his career, and he can't help but act on it. Tenma's kind, doctor instincts are still in there, deep down, and that core, innate part of him is still holding onto his initial belief that all lives are equal and that it's his job to save them all, even if he's trying to suppress those principles now for the sake of his mission. It'll be interesting to see where this journey takes him and how far he's corrupted, and if he really will be able to kill Johan or not, as Hugo talked about last episode.

It's definitely sweet that Tenma continues to be this source of light, but I hate that he's going down this path to try and get to Johan. It doesn't look like it's going to lead to anything...good. :') And yes, in the end, Tenma would still help someone if they possessed that human desire to help someone as a doctor. Yes, it's going to be interesting! At this point, I have no idea where the story will go, so fingers crossed I can keep going in as blind as possible!
