**END OF SERIES HEADPHONE WARNINGS**

This finale was AMAZING! Light has seemed so invincible this entire series, so when he FINALLY gets outplayed, we're practically in shock alongside Light himself! It doesn't seem real!

But everything comes to a head and Light reveals that he has in fact been KIRA this entire time. But Near is quick to put him in his place and everything goes downhill from there! This ending -- it's poetic, indeed, though not as Shakespearean as I had expected -- in a good way!

Now, there is still PLENTY of Death Note media I have to get through, but it feels SO GOOD to be finished with the series so I can talk with you all about it, now! ^^

The truck

Death note is a very dear show to me. Because it gives me so much to think about and theories, there are so many what-ifs, and I adore all sorts of religious stuff. When it comes to the themes of the show, it's easy to think about it as "what is justice" or "how far a person can go for justice" which is what many people have talked about. And while I find that interesting, the creators told (if I remember right, I may be wrong since can't find the source for this anymore)that making a story about right, wrong and morals wasn't their intention. And that shines with Nears words in this. Because Light is just a murderer and that's it. There are heavy links between Kira and the cults in Japan in the late 20th century and early 2000s Since those were serious and horrific groups and a big issue at the time so it's quite unlikely for it to be just a coincidence. And Kira's followers were quite honestly a cult, (by definition of "a group or movement held together by a shared commitment to a charismatic leader or ideology.") Kira's followers (the ones that we saw) were young, and people more likely to sympathize with Kira were also young. So it's not far-fetched to say that it was basically a story about youth, unsatisfied with the world deciding to follow a wrong and radical person/path to a utopia that they wished for. And I could probably write essays about the similarities, but for the sake of it being Christmas, I shall not spend my evening with such serious topics more than necessary. I just feel like this is the point to talk about that so I have given it some base when I'll probably start talking about this in the manga discussion comments. In the discord you mentioned that you will be reading the guidebook and short stories on camera and I'd recommend reading the last chapter 108 as well, you will know why! when you do it. By the way, there's a fanmade "Death Note Fan Made Alternate Ending Light Wins" video on youtube, which is kinda manga panels edited together and it's very good quality, I'd recommend checking it out after you're done with your death note journey. now, I'm just waiting for that novel the most... Because I just can't explain how stressed I am that you will accidentally get spoiled with it like I was... I mean I didn't even know the novel excited before I went to the ao3 and... Let's say that the book has so much lore about stuff, that I can't even talk about some characters without talking about the novel. This is quite disappointing since I was going to explain my views on the characters before I released how tightly my views connect with the novel, but I guess that can wait. BUT ANYWAY! I'm so glad that you have enjoyed this show and I cannot wait for the upcoming Netflix live action ;)

I always think light was broken when his father died. Great show and great Manga. Merry Christmas

I've never watched this fully. The first three episodes made me so disgusted with Light that I couldn't watch any more of his "justice". But I needed closure on it, so I watched the ending when I learned what happens. Seeing "God" reduced to a frightened boy, and being called-out for what he really is - a murderer; now that's justice.

There is another anime created by the same team that wrote Deathnote, to some degree autobiographical, called Bakuman. I think it has been on at least one of your polls, but if you are looking to extend your Deathnote experience you may want to check it out. It has a totally different vibe, it gets into the workings of the manga-creation world.

Yessss, Bakuman is going to be on the retro poll when we get back to it! I've had it recommended a lot, but didn't realize it was from the creators of Death Note! That's exciting! Thanks for that info and the comment! Happy Holidays!

I haven't been a Light fan, truly, since Naomi and Raye's deaths (which started around episode 4), so that checks out. It also really made me feel satisfied at the end, wwhen Light goes from being a so-called god to a young man floundering in a puddle. Near's correction of him was very welcomed. Justice, indeed! Thanks for the comment!

Yesss, Death Note has been SUCH a journey and really made me think about the concept of “justice,” and what we consider to be right vs. wrong. I am reading the manga and there was a little note by the mangaka at the start where he noted that it wasn’t his intention for the story to go that way, but I like that it did. And yesssss, Near’s “answer” to Light’s monologue was perfection! The commentary on cults and “followers” does feel intentional as well, I agree! There definitely seems to be a trend in those following, and that’s fascinating that it could be connected to a generation following “a wrong and radical person” towards that utopia – that’s a great way of phrasing it! Ahhh, I’ve actually done a dry read of the manga (couldn’t wait hahahaha) but I am not going to talk about it in full until I post the manga reaction/discussion video, because I need to go back in more detail and take notes (I haven’t done that yet), but I’ll definitely talk about chapter 108 in my discussion. I really don’t want to read an AU where Light wins, if I’m honest, because I love the ending of this story so much, but I’ll think about it hahaha!! I am excited about the novel, though! I haven’t got it yet, but it’s on my to-get list! :) Thanks so much for the comment and Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!! :D

Thanks so much for your reactions to this series. This anime is one of my favorites, even though I came very close to quitting it when L was killed. That one really hurt! The story, the characters, the themes, were all great -- and your reactions made it all even better.

I totally understand the heartbreak at L dying, it's SUCH A TRAGIC moment! But yes, the themes, characters, and story as a whole are likely to stick to me for a long while; they're so iconic! Thank you for the kind words and comment! :)
