**Headphone Warning Possible**

HOLY COW, we take a DEEP dive into Parts 7 and 8 of the English translation, aka Chapters 17-23 in the web serialization, and there is a LOT of ground to cover!

We get into Xie Lian's head in this part and see that he's much sassier, and MUCH more tragic, than the sweet, cinnamon bun exterior would have you believe! Couple that with more lore, the introduction of Zhao and our mysterious ladies, and the entrance into Ban Yue -- my favorite arc from Season 1 is underway and I'm so excited to talk with you all about it!

Thank you for watching with me and for all the support!

oooh our poor bun with trauma filling Xie Lian just that talk about being able to bear pain like it is nothing makes me remember during the Xuan Ji arc when Xie Lian tripped on a cloud and had so many injuries (in the audio drama extra he even had a broken neck if I remember correctly) 😢😢 also backstory time with Hongjing! we get to see something after the 1st demotion but before Feng Xin left 🤔 and Xie Lian focusing more on the treasures he had to sell more than the lack of food 😢😢 Xie Lian is really observant in the novel! but he doesn't show it off most of the time - he really wants to be sure of things before he reveals anything our little cinnamon bun XL: what's this? HC: let me tell you all about it gege~ NF/FY: what's this? HC: you don't even know this? so ignorant... Evil Master Fangxin hmmm 🤔🤔 interesting how Xie Lian is the one who knows the story instead of the others it's not surprising that Xie Lian doesn't know the Wind Master but Nan Feng? since Elemental Masters seem like a big deal in Heaven 👀 and yes! Pei Jr is much more likeable in the novel - in the donghua they couldn't show off the pretty boy too much bc he'd be too suspicious (even without the eyeliner 🤣) and now onto the Sinner's Pit!! it seems from the chapter name (in the eng translation) we'll get all the exposition in this chapter!

The quote you mentioned about jovial people having the darkest paths immediately made me think of a couple of Robin Williams' quotes 😢: "All it takes is a beautiful fake smile to hide an injured soul" and "I think the saddest people always try their hardest to make people happy because they know what it’s like to feel absolutely worthless and they don’t want anyone else to feel like that." and damn does that fit Xie Lian so well. "Let's jam!" is that a Cowboy Bebop reference? 😂 (Now have the Opening playing in my head) There are bad cooks and then there's Xie Lian who is just off the scale. But at least he can admit it to himself...though doesn't stop him from continuing to try and make food. Xie Lian is our smart baby 🥺 Getting his perspective in the novel really helps this to hit home. That fake smile from Xie Lian in the manhua is just perfect. San Lang playing with his chopsticks should be somewhat childish, but I thought of it as a little menacing because he's eyeing up the cultivator. Anything can be a deadly weapon in our Ghost King's hands. Makes me think of the movie John Wick and the story of the Baba Yaga killing three men with a pencil 🤣 Heavenly Officials' treatment of Xie Lian really makes me side with San Lang's opinions of the Heavenly Realm. All the eye rolls for Fu Yao. But also showing what a little shit he is with his hair blowing into Nan Feng's face is fantastic. Amazed that he just swiped it away and didn't yank on that ponytail or curse out the other Deputy God. Xie Lian is such a boomer at times but Nan Feng and Fu Yao treat him like their naïve teenager that they must protect from travelling down the wayward path. Said path in this instance being one young man in red. Here in Northern Ireland sarcasm is one of the biggest forms of humour, so I just love sarcastic San Lang. Especially when pitted against the hot-headed Deputy Gods, Nan Feng and Fu Yao. Any time I see that quote my brain automatically thinks it in the Chinese: Tian guan ci fu, bai wu jin ji! "the two junior officials watched on in disbelief" really just makes me think of the 'right in front of my salad' meme. Hualian really just out here flirting away under the night sky, uncaring about any onlookers. Also the two of them pretty much just acting like they're on the equivalent of a school trip, and not some official investigation into decades of murder. In the manhua Nan Feng and Fu Yao planning to test San Lang look like such stereotypical villains about to unleash their evil plan. Yes Hongjing reminds me so much of Sting! Just Sting glows blue for orcs, and Hongjing turns red for any non-human. Contrasting colours! I now need fanart of a humanised version of both swords together. Oh the trauma linked to Hongjing 😭 But at the same time it really does help add yet another facet to Xie Lian's character and a glimpse into his past. Xie Lian really did give Fu Yao and Nan Feng his equivalent of "That's rough, buddy" and I love it 😂 Tian Guan Ci Fu really loving those parallels. Tian Sheng being the same age Xie Lian was when he first ascended could be seen as yet another parallel. San Lang really being out here going "they laughed and upset gege so I shall make them kneel!" That part of Xie Lian hurts so much. That he's become used to pain and so no longer really feels it. As someone that has chronic pain this resonates a lot with me. But with Xie Lian it feels like it adds to his lack of self-worth. Banyue men just built different. But being over nine feet is just ridiculous (the 4' 11" woman says 😂). No spoilers but consider that Xie Lian is also a god, and we can't really see that he has any friends in the Heavenly Realm. So the woman in black's comment about "*your* friends" could simply be about how she isn't as friendly nor an extrovert like the Wind Master. "I like calling you" the *flirting*. So here for it. Yeah in this part no dismembered limbs like Mo Dao Zu Shi 😂

I definitely feel for our poor Xie Lian, who's just trying his best! T_T And yessss, Hongjing backstory! And ugh, the fact that he regretted giving the treasures away, even if it meant starving... T_T MXTX, why you doing this?! I like that XL has a bit of Wangji in him -- wanting to be sure of both sides before making any judgments; his attitude is not like LWJ, but I like that that aspect is! And hahahaha, SL is VERY particular in who he shows favoritism too, eh? ;) Nan Feng not knowing the WInd Master is VERY intriguing, as is Fang Xin, but I suspect we'll find more about them later, so I'm just filing it away for now. ^^ I do like Pei Jr. much more already than in the donghua -- of course, the donghua is a visual medium, so I get why they couldn't show too much, because it woudl give too much away. The novel has that going towards it in that it can hide details a bit better, since we're only seeing things from a certain perspective. And yesssss, SO excited for the exposition to come in Part 5! Thank you for the comment!!

YES, those quotations from Robin Wiliams were what I was thinking of, but didn’t want to misquote – it’s so sad because I can see the parallels and I hate the self-harm XL lets happen to himself. :( It makes me want to hug him – I can see why I was aligned with HC in this! ^^ Also, XL being self-aware of his terrible cookin seems part of that self-harm angle…which just makes me want to sigh at our poor bean. And YES! Anytime I do, “Let’s jam!” I think of Cowboy Bebop – it’s one of my all-time favorite OP’s for a series! And one of the reasons I love Corgis. :) I do love that we’re getting XL’s perspective in the novel – the donghua has him so closed off (because he doesn’t talk much), so this is quite refreshing to get that perspective from him! The manhua does his facial gestures SUCH justice, too! :) And OMG, HC as John Wick – does that make XL his wife…and Ruoye the puppy? Or XL the puppy? So much to think about, hahaha, but yes, he is deadly with ANYTHING. Good thing he loves XL. :) But yeah, seeing the HR shun XL makes me side with SL as well. Fu Yao’s eye rolls will never get old! The hair blowing in the manhu and Nan Feng just dealing with it is glorious humor. And I agree, sarcastic humor is wonderful, so I’m all on board SL’s banter! But I also get a kick out of XL’s “dad/boomer” humor – our poor heavenly bean – and the fact that Nan Feng and Fu Yao teeter from youths protecting their unsuspecting grandpa to parents trying to keep their kid from dating the delinquent! It’s a great contrast and works so well because these are ageless beings at this point! And yes, they just have to sit back and watch HC and XL have their flirtatious moments; I’d say it’s a double-date but it seems NF and FY haven’t realized they’re a couple…yet. ;) I wish I wouldn’t fumble my Chinese pronunciation so much, or I’d want to say, “Tian guan ci fu, bai wu jin ji!” I’ll have to practice more. HongJing is JUST like Sting! Yes! I would be down to see that fan art as well! But yes, we get more layers with XL through that story, but man…the trauma! @_@ That is good to note that Sheng is the same age XL was when he ascended, sort of linking to that “innocence” and naivete, right? It’s very interesting! I definitely feel that SL wants to protect XL and gets angry at how little self-worth he has – it definitely makes me feel for XL and want to help him, too, as does the fact that he cannot connect well with the other gods in the HR. That’s a really good point that maybe the woman in black is a god, she’s just not into the Wind Master’s friend circle, hahaha! But YES, so much flirting with these ladies and I’m all about it! :) Thank you for the comment! I’m excited to get into the BanYue arc more! :D
