**BROTHERLY HEADPHONE WARNING**

I have wanted more HuaiSang in The Untamed, and this movie was DEFINITELY satisfying in that regard -- our actor extraordinaire has never looked better! The moments of him and Mingjue were tugging at my fangirl heart!

This movie was a fun romp, sometimes unintentionally hilarious, but other times giving some really good bonding between our Nie brothers that I'd missed from the original series. Oh, and Yao makes a sneaky cameo, too! Fun times!

Thank you for watching with me and for the support!

Ivan is Yda

YESSSS, JI LIIII😆 I love Ji Li, he’s a goof! They all are, behind the scenes😂 I’ll link the BTS of this movie at the end of this comment! :3 …it is 1 AM right now and I’m watching this—great🥲 Wang Yizhou is fricking HANDSOME in real life😩 and even then he looks a lot like Ji Li! FORESHADOWIIIIING FORESHADOWING EVERYWHERE This takes place after Wei Ying’s death. Jin Guangshan is still alive, but since Yao is already a Jin, this the robes he wears. He started wearing those after the Sunshot Campaign. Huaisang is said to be like Wei Wuxian, excellent in the the arts except swords. Back in those times, it is expected of young noblemen to know such things, such as the use of musical instruments. MIngjue looks so badass in his stance tho—standing on his men, camera getting all them angles👀 That’s what the movie wanted to focus on. They wanted to show that Huaisang is more than the spineless cowardice he shows the public. Because a lot of people said it was inconsistent for Huaisang to be the final mastermind in the Untamed, cause a lot of people called him a nerd, a geek, and a background character. So this is like, “you’re looking down on him cause he’s a nerd, so here’s to show you that nerds are better than you think they are”. If you look carefully, the way Huaisang called out Mingjue, is the same way Wuxian called them out on their use of saber spirits👀 I’m not ready to cry🥲 this is going to make me cry. Their reconciliation and the aftermath of Yao’s work😭 THE TEARS! BBY HUAISANG AND MINGJUE 😭 The idea here is that the Sword Spirit is messing with them and these are illusions caused by the spirits. I’m crying in the midst of eating my ramen—tears, yummy😂 The 8 form diagram is a symbol of the Dao belief. The Daoism belief is that all things happen for a reason, and we must not fight again it. Just wanted to add that in there. Oh this promise is gonna end bad🥲 WHATS IN DA BOOOOOX Wuxian, probably: time to solve Nie Mingjue’s murder Wuxian, after seeing all that: what…the hell happened after i died… Zhonghui is a Nie, a cousin, I believe? And someone said that if Huaisang and Mingjue died there, he would inherit the Nie Sect after. This is the most emotion we’ve seen on Huaisang and Mingjue. 😭 hurts😭 hurts a lot. AND HUAISANG CRYING IS MAKING ME CRY😭😭😭 and the way his instinct was to call for his brother And so it begins, Huaisang’s Anti-hero origin beginssss!!! THAT SMIRK AT THE END (Also, am writing this while watching along side you so😂) Ok so I focused mostly on the one thing that got my attention and that was the whole thing about the chains and the mythical stuff they had going on. The thing about Chinese Drama is that Xianxia Dramas, which is the genre MDZS and MXTX’s other works focus on, rely on using Qi, which is dubbed as the spiritual power of the universe that one cultivates in their bodies. They follow a lot of different beliefs woven together, like Daoism and Confucianism, which are the two main beliefs often seen in these series. But anyway, in these genres, they focus a lot on the different uses of qi. Some people use it on instruments to turn them into weapons, like the MDZS characters, and later on 2Ha and other Xianxia/Wuxia characters. Some use it to create weapons using their spiritual energy alone, like what Mingjue and Zhonghui did with the chains. Others use it to enhance the powers of their weapon. In these stories, it is also believed that qi can help the body heal faster. The weaker your qi is, the more susceptible your body is to longer healing periods. And it’s weird to a western audience to understand the concept of it. But every Xianxia and Wuxia story has this trope of overpowered human beings. You’ll get used to it😂 Fatal Journey BTS: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLpZC4Xn63On12Q1Fqaz_AXmRdDjH-Wi7X

Some of the CGI and effects are great. Others...well it's not a big blockbuster epic that has a lot of money behind it so it's completely understandable. But yes, the OST is wonderful. So many comparisons between Nie Huaisang and Wei Wuxian. The whole part about not carrying their blades, but also Nie Huaisang using a wind instrument just like Wei Wuxian. Like you said there is the difference in the ones pulling them about carrying their sword, one is the elder brother, the other is the younger. But both are Sect Leaders and I feel in this moment for both Nie Mingjue and Jiang Cheng it's their role as Sect Leader and not as Big/Little Brother that makes them chide their brothers for not carrying their swords. Nie Zonghui, Nie Mingjue's right-hand man, we love. He's a great character. Too bad this is the world of Mo Dao Zu Shi that means so many characters are unsafe. Fatal Journey is set after Wei Wuxian's death. Jin Guangyao we first see in this outfit immediately after the battle at Nightless City (after they win the Sunshot Campaign) and when Meng Yao is first re-introduced as Jin Guangyao. The movie does mix in canon with their own plot so that's why things that happened in the book generations ago (such as the grave robbers) is happening in this moment instead. First time I watched this movie I will admit to thinking Nie Mingjue would have been such a good cheer-tator in Bring It On. Whilst Nie Huaisang showing what a badass he can be with his smarts. He doesn't have to be good at martial arts to be able to help. All for a brush one of the men with Nie Huaisang didn't make it out. Really feel for him though. Same for Nie Mingjue who keeps losing all the men that go with him, but as Sect Leader he can't break down or show any vulnerability. I love Nie Huaisang questioning who they are to decide if the corpses are those belonging to 'evil men'. Especially if you take into context that in recent times the Cultivation World killed the Wen Remnants and planned to lay siege to the Burial Mounds and murder Wei Wuxian because he was 'evil'. For dramatic effect they really decided to go the "it's bigger on the inside" route with the Ancestral Hall. Also the bridge gave me so many bridge flashbacks from other movies (Lord of the Rings with Gandalf vs the Balrog, and Captain America: The First Avenger with Steve jumping being the two main ones). Even with them fighting and the things Nie Huaisang have said to Nie Mingjue, the moment he calls for his Da-ge to come help him, Nie Mingjue is right there at his side. Which hurts for future Nie Huaisang when Nie Mingjue is dead. I did laugh at you questioning how a lot of the things they did were possible. To be fair in the show we don't see them flying on their swords very much, and never in *this* way. But I believe that's how Nie Mingjue was able to save his brother. Same for how he was able to do and loop below and over the bridge earlier. It mostly shows how strong of qi Nie Mingjue has, especially in comparison to his other men who can't pull the same kinds of manoeuvres. The flogging I believe happens because Nie Mingjue was supposed to be practising his sword forms. Nie Huaisang might have also been meant to be practising. But they instead start messing around and playing. Very severe punishment for children to face. Knowing that Nie Mingjue was (likely) the first person to gift Nie Huaisang a calligraphy brush, and then when they were older he snapped Nie Huaisang's favourite brush (which I believe is this very brush his Da-ge gave him). It just gives me so many emotions! We get the calligraphy brush pain instead of burning of the books and fans pain. "all this emotion, where has it been?" weeeell all this emotion is for his big brother, and the majority of when we see Nie Huaisang his brother's dead so... I do honestly love the way they shot the maze array within the Ancestral Hall. In the novel the maze array is outside of the Ancestral Hall to prevent anyone being able to enter, but this is cool visually. And once again another comparison with Wei Wuxian. All those voices remind me so much of when Wei Wuxian was thrown into the Burial Mounds and the voices of the resentful energy calling out to him, and the one voice that made him more aware was Lan Wangji calling out to him. Whereas Nie Huaisang fainted before his brother physically rescued him. That conversation between the Nie brothers is making me tear up because of the music. If you think of the lyrics during the credits whilst this conversation is happening just adds a whole level of pain more. Also Nie Huaisang assuaging his brother of his guilt. He might have got angry and blamed him earlier, but he's realised that he doesn't have a better solution either. You can dislike a bad solution, but unless you can come up with a better one you really have to be accepting that there's not a lot of other options. And Nie Mingjue getting emotional about he always wanted to protect his brother and be a good Sect Leader? But instead he'll dying soon and won't be able to protect Nie Huaisang, and his words, actions, and decisions as Sect Leader have led to the blood of his subordinates on his hands. Very pessimistic look back on his life, and that's why I'm so thankful for Nie Huaisang to tell his brother that those things are not all that he is, and he'll be able to go to the Afterlife and proudly face their ancestors. Nie Mingjue and Nie Zonghui being proud of Nie Huaisang is *everything*. Also being able to see this Nie Huaisang (who's able to figure out arrays and things so quickly) really gives you a much better glimpse into his hidden character within the series. It's easy to see how he became the mastermind and was able to bring about the downfall, ruin and death of Jin Guangyao. That shot of them all with the doors opening? Honestly feels like a boy band album cover. Love it! If you can believe there isn't a single FanFic for a Fatal Journey/Bring It On crossover! That's madness. I'd rectify this situation but I feel like it'd definitely be a crack!fic and I'm not quite confident enough in that genre of writing yet. Possessed!Zonghui gives me such The Witcher vibes and I love it. And we're randomly transported into a 'mecha'...Though we do get the Nie Mingjue's L'Oreal advert too so. The moment you realised it was the bastardised version of the Song of Clarity, just as we get all the death...your reaction was perfect. RIP Nie Zonghui and the others, but especially Nie Zonghui. He was my favourite side character from this movie. You'd think I'd have learned by now not to care about side characters, but nope. Yeah Nie Huaisang's technically not lying. He just doesn't specifiy that the sword spirit in question was Baxia. Nie Mingjue crying breaks my heart. But especially because Nie Huaisang is trying his hardest to be strong for his big brother in that moment, but those were people he grew up with and loved too. Movie did not need to give us both grieving Nie Mingjue and then grieving Nie Huaisang. Too much pain! "I will protect you no matter what you do" flash to Nie Mingjue's funeral and Nie Huaisang realising the truth behind his brother's death. Well, his brother basically said he'd be on his side no matter what, so what's a few murders, lots of lying and duplicity, bringing back Wei Wuxian at the cost of an innocent boy's soul, cat decapitations, bribes, causing a suicide, and forcing your Er-ge to kill your San-ge? To end it with Nie Huaisang having a "give me strength" moment, and then that shot of him bowing and his true contemptuous expression? So damn good! Perfect way to end the movie, and lead into the person he was in the series.

Y’all have such dedication, watching this so late! :) Then again, I’m a major night owl, so I understand! :D But yeah, SO MUCH FORESHADOWING, right?! And yes, Ji Li is WORTH it in this and how Mingjue’s actor looks in real life! @///@ Okay, that makes sense with the robes, so thank you for putting that on here! I love how HuaiSang and Mingjue looks in this! And I love that they focused on the brothers for this to show HuaiSang’s “true” self more and to show that Mingjue was more than his “tough” exterior, in his care for his younger brother. And ooohhhh, that connection with WuXian and HuaiSang and the saber spirits – we love to see it! Oh no, salty, tear-stained ramen!! Hahahahaha, I love that WuXian instantly regrets solving Mingjue’s murder, haha! “What did y’all do while I was gone?!” It’s like Hamilton’s, “What did I Miss?” XD I’m glad you explained the Qi usage and spiritual powers, that makes a lot more sense! I feel if I watch other dramas like 2Ha, I’ll get that now! It’s great to get that confirmation, so thank you for explaining that! I did like the side characters in this movie and all of the emotion that it shows with our Nie brothers! It’s great seeing them in a more detailed light! And the ending with the funeral got me; our poor HuaiSang mourning! T-T But yessss, that look at the end to Yao, showing the start of his path towards revenge! @_@ Thank you for the comment and the BTS for this movie!! I really appreciate it! :D

I do admit that no matter the movie or episode, the OST for all of The Untamed is wonderful. But yessss, all the HuaiSang and WuXian comparisons in this movie! And the ties between Cheng and Mingjue were wonderful, too! And that brush breaking! T__T It’s so sad, like you said, because it’s likely the first gift Mingjue gave him and the impact of him breaking it! :( I really liked Zonghui! He was such a great side character in this! :( And yeah, MXTX doesn’t care to kill off characters! It’s good to get confirmation about the timeline and why Yao is in that outfit; thanks for helping to clarify that! :) And HA! I’m glad I’m not the only one to see the Bring it On connection, there! :D I like the other references that you bring up as well, tied to this movie – that’s a great point! But seriously, NO Bring It On/Fatal Journey crossovers?! The nerve! Hahahaha!! It seems like a crack fic SOMEONE should get on! Hahaha!! The flogging makes more sense, now that you point that out, but yeah, yikes for kids to endure that. And I can see the Qi argument for the bridge scene; I couldn’t help but be amused, hahaha! And mmmm…maybe I need to watch The Witcher, haha! Ahhh, it makes sense, too, that most of HuaiSang’s emotion is for his brother and with him dead…. :( The movie does a great job of making you feel the emotion between these brothers and their bond! I really liked how the music was used throughout this movie, especially in their scenes together, as well. HuaiSang’s actions really do make more sense after all this! And how they tied in the corrupted Song of Clarity! Thank you for the kind words; that scene was done so well! I felt bad for Zonghui in that moment. :( MXTX tricks us yet again! But yeah, the promise Mingjue gives him and tie back to the present? Heartbreaking! HuaiSang burning the joss paper and mourning?! My heart! I like that this movie helps to establish the bond so well to where we GET why HuaiSang would go to such lengths to avenge his brother…and yesssss, that look at the end! SO GOOD! I loved it and a great way to end the movie and tie back to the actual series! Thank you so much for the kind words and comment! I’m ready for the other movie next week! :D
