I officially LOVE the father-son Todoroki duo! They pose a legitimate threat to our team and have a unique and interesting backstory and motivation!

I have a feeling this "dark horse" Yakushi is going to make for an exciting opponent against our Seidou boys! I'm SO curious to see how Furuya, Sawamura, KawaKami, and the ace Tanba (YEAH!) handle ol' Raichi ...and how the sparks will fly further with Coach Todoroki vs. Miyuki! @_@

I was so shocked when Yakushi won against Ichidai. Ichidai is one of the big 3 in the region besides Inashiro and Seijo so it was so unexpected when they lost. Especially since they have been building Seijo’s rematch against their team for SO long! They eliminated Seijo in the last fall’s Koshien qualifier. Plus, Tanba has been managing his injury for the sole purpose of being ready to play against Manaka. And after all that rivalry build up, it was so unexpected to me that the manga/anime went in the direction they did! Before that game, I had never seen in any other sports anime essentially throw away all the build up of a team in favor of a darkhorse new team. ***SPOILERS FOR HAIKYUU - Like imagine Nekoma lost just before they could face Karasuno at Nationals after all that built up! My jaw would have hit the floor!*** It was a brilliant plot twist in my opinion and I really would like if other sport anime tried to be as unpredictable as DNA tries to be.

Right?! They really built Ichidai up, and then BOOM! TODOROKI FAMILY! Leave it to the Todorki's to shake things up! :P And yessss, wow, that would have been insane if Nekoma had lost to that one school (who we don't even remember! Haha, the Monkeys wasn't it?!) -- that would have been insane. Definitely unpredictable! As much as I was hopeful for the fated rivalry, I'm really on board with Raichi and his gruff dad. Soooo intriguing! :)

Honestly, I have been so excited for this set of episodes; for the end of the Ichidai-Yakushi game, and the build-up and start of the Seido-Yakushi game. Usually, I don't even have time to watch until the weekend, but these episodes demanded a more immediate response. For such an intense cliffhanger after the last episode of last week, it's kind of disappointing that Ichidai lost off-screen. Of course, I understand it narratively - they were a red herring (and a good one, since they've been building-up to a Ichidai-Seido showdown almost all series) - and it makes sense not to see everything about Yakushi until "we" are playing them. Also, although we are deprived of the "fated rivalry", it's an interesting setup that Seido now has to avenge the rival they were seeking to defeat (as well as to teach a lesson to Todoroki-san about respecting every team along the way; although I think he might be right as far as pitchers are concerned - for now). And it kind of puts Seido in a situation where they are suddenly the underdogs, given that Yakushi - the team that an anime would normally be about (with the perfect shonen protagonist in Raichi) - beat the Spring Invitational champions. And it creates a great opening for the game. First of all, it leads to such an awkward moment for Raichi. The poor guy doesn't have a clue why all of Seido is glaring at him... Even Sawamura sets aside his rivalry with Furuya to cheer him on against Yakushi (and his new rival, Raichi, who doesn't even know a rivalry has formed). I don't think he demands to be switched once. And what is of particular interest to me is that Coach Kataoka decides to go with a pitcher relay for this game. In the early episodes, when the school administrators visited and suggested that very thing, Kataoka was furious with them. Now maybe he was simply offended that they second-guessed him as the coach, but more-or-less up to this point, he's been very committed to the concept of the "ace". It's a good decision though. Against such a wily and flexible coach like the elder Todoroki, who - like you say - is playing the game like a chess match, any flexibility on behalf of Seido can be nothing but positive. It's kind of early in the game to say much else, but there is one last thing of note. As we saw in the Akikawa game, Furuya starts to become tense after he allows runners. And as that tension worsens, his pitches become less reliable. But this time, he actually puts is faith in the fielders and relaxes. It's nice growth on his part.

I was really hyped for these episodes as well -- I couldn't believe they gave us the end of the match OFFSCREEN! Is it like that in the manga?! That blew my mind, especially after all the build up! And yeah, WHAT a red herring! That was extremely clever on the mangaka's part...I didn't see it coming. YES! I was floored that the team you would normally root for in a series, Yakushi, are the rivals now! And Raichi has "shonen protagonist" written all over him! And I love it! That's interesting that you brought up the "pitcher relay" -- I honestly forgot how offended he was when it was suggested waaaaay back when, but you're right. And I LOVE how very different the coaching styles of Kataoka and Todoroki are -- but both coaches are players who are "obsessed" with baseball, just with different motivations and experiences. That's a great note about Furuya, too! And a nice notice of the contrast with Sawamura -- Sawamura has been trusting of the field from the get-go, whereas Furuya has had to learn trust in a team. Great point!! :D I'm so excited for this match!

Yeah, the loss was off-panel in the manga as well. The anime is doing well at being faithful to it.

seido i would compare to karasuno to a t because both fallen champions who went to nationals but cant make it anymore and yakushi would be like serin in kuroko no basket a new team that just isnt recognized because they dont have very big names in the line up and has never been to nationals but still make a huge impact in a tournament bracket

romaniablack

Oh wow, with the fallen champions vibe, I can definitely see the comparison to Karasuno in that regard! Great point! @.@ I haven't seen Kuroko no Basket, but that's interesting about Yakushi compared to them! Yeah, despite not having any standout players, I love that Yakushi is establishing itself as a legitimate threat! ^^
