Okay, fandom. I see you. I SEE YOU. I get why this show may have the fandom it does, because the cave scenes in this episode, particularly the conversations between WuXian and Wangji are...just...*chef's kiss*

This show leaves us on a cliffhanger-moment, and the entire episode gives us some interesting observations on these characters to think about for the future, but the development between Wangji and WuXian this episode?! HOLY SMOKES. I NEED MORE.

WuXian Suibian

The Cave, "the cave of two lovers" (The last Airbender reference). So many small moments in the cave that I love. Wangji crying kills me every time. Wei Ying being shy. Their body language, their voices, etc so perfect there to set up their relationship. Grabbing the ribbon was to get Wangji mad to help him spit up the bad blood. Wei Ying knew he needed to do something to help him. Wangji made the comment about the brand, because he does not want Wei Ying's body scarred. Remember that Wangji hates being touched and touching others. For him to reach out and touch Wei Ying is big. Granted Wei Ying is always touching Wangji. Wei Ying's golden core rejected the resentful energy once again, protecting him from being consumed by it. That Lan Clan member was also the one that was going to give up Mianmian to the Wens. Not a good clan member. Thankfully most of the time the CGI is good, but yeah the turtle in this episode is bad.

UGH, yes, the body language, dialogue, and the whole mood of that cave scene. I get it, I get the shipping now, and I'm on board, too! ^^ And I didn't even think about Wangji hating physical contact but then trying to rub the herbs on WuXian's wound! @_@ Wow, yeah, that's so true! DEVELOPMENT! And ahhh, the discussion of the golden core, the not-so-noble Lan Clan member...all interesting developments! The CGI turtle was a tiny nitpick -- I just noticed it in the moment, but I'll totally let it slide because the rest of the episode was SO good!

Cultivators are fine without food as long as they're skilled enough to practice "inedia" - an ability to live without food and sunlight. Both Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji are the strongest of their generation, so the challenges they faced in that cave mostly involved severe injuries and lack of good medications. Also, notice that the ending song has changed! Considering that the ed is Wangji's perspective, the changes symbolize the shift in their relationships as well! Looking back on this part of the novel now, the original scene with tending wounds was much more hardcore than any adaptation possible: if I'm not mistaken, Wuxian practically stripped Wangji naked, not only grabbed his ribbon, lmao. Wangji is a mix of tsundere and gay panic, because Wei Wuxian is the first person, who managed to stir up so many intense feelings inside of him, and of course because of it Wangji shut everybody out except for Lan Xichen. But it's just a matter of time. Lan Wangji is a very complex character and his growth over the years is huge. Trust me, Lan Zhan from the second episode and teenage Wangji are two completely different characters. Thank you for reaction!

2021-10-19 03:49:33 Ooooh, your description of Wangji here has me VERY excited for the rest of the season and for Season 2 -- I noticed that he's a lot different looking back on Episodes 1 and 2 than he has been...so that makes sense. Also, if the cave scene in the novel is as you've described, I'm going to be VERY interested in reading it later. :) That makes a lot of sense about food and the cultivators -- I figured it wouldn't be a big thing, but I'm glad you bring it up here! Oh, I have really enjoyed this series so far, but THIS EPISODE officially solidified my understanding of the fandom. I loved so much about this! And Wangji's frustration in the cave and WuXian's obliviousness...Wangji, we see you! :3
