Here we are, in the middle of fated match. Btw, I was watching but didn't comment cuz the uploads are at midnight for me, so I'd watch, sleep, and forget what I wanted to comment)) I remember wanting to comment on how pro basketball league didn't exist back then. It's a very recent thing we got. It was started from september of 2016. Yes, 2016. No pros till then. It's wildly acknowledged that manga Slam Dunk played a major role in making it happen. No one played basketball till then. Even soccer got pro league in mid 90s, but not basketball. With Slam Dunk's popularity people started playing for the first time. Kids. We finally got a generation of kids passionate about basketball, and 20 years later they managed to establish the pro league. I think there was like official thanking ceremony for Inoue at the opening, or something. He singlehandedly made basketball popular enough to make it possible to be a pro sport. Anyway. Back to the volume. Again, weird translations, but eh, not a big deal. Like coach telling Uozumi that he finally found someone who can be the "central pillar" of the team, not a literal center position. Doesn't change much. Speaking of which, I like this constant reminder that these are highschool kids. Uozumi may look a 2m tall brute of a man, but just a couple years ago, around 15~16, he was just a tall kid. Nothing special. Wanting to quit due to extra hard training at Ryounan, being talked about his back how he's just tall and nothing else. No stamina, no skills. Also here is where we start to really see the not so humble true nature of Rukawa. He's selfish and self centered, full of confidence, admitting defeat to no one. If others can't do it, that's fine. He'll rebound, steal, dribble and make the baskets on his own. He really thinks he can do it. Because he knows he got talent and he knows he put in the hard work. He is really cocky in his own awkward and silent way. Most people tend to agree that Rukawa is based on young Michael Jordan when he was new to NBA and rough around the edges. I started rewatching Haikyuu again recently, so to put it in Haikyuu terms, Rukawa is what Kageyama wanted to be. Remember him saying "in truth I wish I could serve, recieve, toss and spike just by myself"? That's what Rukawa is actually doing in these games. Though he does pass to others. Occasionally. The game is getting heated, and we don't know how it will turn out. I mean, I know, and those who read it know, but Inoue is really making the tension be felt. Really draws people in. Even knowing the outcome I still get worried and hopeful at certain points.

Thank you so much for the information and awesome analysis, here! ^^ That is incredible about Slam Dunk influencing basketball becoming popular in Japan and helping to get a Pro League started -- Inoue definitely deserves some praise, because after reading this series, how could you NOT feel emotional or want to play the sport! That's incredible. I really like how this game is at the point where there's really no "decided" victor. I had a feeling Kainen would win their game against Ryonan, but this one? I could honestly see it going either way. And that's what's so fun -- when an author/mangaka has you guessing. Yeah, it's easy to forget these are still 15-17 year old kids playing, especially ones like Akagi and Uozumi, who seem much more mature because of their height and status as captains. And YES, Rukawa...what an interesting character! Like you said, the cracks under the surface are definitely more apparent this volume. I appreciate that Rukawa is a quiet, introverted character -- because if he was loud and abrasive like say Sakuragi or Kyota were, he'd be a dislikable character, since he is actually self-centered and selfish. He DOES believe he can do it all for himself, and actually follows through with it...which is...definitely frustrating to his opponents and Sakuragi. I can see where they're setting his character up for things, but I guess we'll have to wait and see!! Thanks again for the comment! This match has definitely been a highlight in the series so far!
