This story was apparently based on an arc from the Astroboy manga, but I haven't read that (I might try to find it). I do have the subbed two episode 1963 adaptation of this story if you're interested. It's not very good; I think the original manga would be more interesting. I also watched the first few Astroboy episodes and like you mention, Pluto actually softens Dr. Tenma's character, he's a complete lunatic in the original. I'm looking forward to the live stream! It should be a lot of fun, hopefully I can make it.

Loved the reaction & discussion! This has been a really fun set of discussions and touched on a lot of interesting themes. I’m really glad I watched it along with you. 🥰 Any issues I personally have with the series I think I can distil into: who was this for? Who was the intended audience? You touch on this in the discussion, and I think the show was more confused about what it wanted to do. It is written to fit an existing universe, existing characters, with a bunch of very specific themes (passing on of hatred, ‘othering,’ etc) but then also with a specific allegory heaped on top. I think we can say 8 episodes was too short – but by standard runtime this would have been a 24-episode season, and I would have expected a standard 2-cour one-off show to be able to handle itself better. I cannot understate though how much I loved the art and animation, especially the environments and the colours. And getting that scene with Gesicht, Helena and Robita? I may try to check out the manga for the story arc online before the livestream to talk about it -- that's a good idea, but glad to know the anime is out there! That's VERY interesting to know that about the OG Tenma from the anime -- some of Tezuka's characterizations are WILD from what I've seen! Not in a bad way, just WILD!
