 *OFFERED HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

This episode maintains the mystery of the "case" Shindo and Kei are trying to solve while also ramping up towards our final three episodes of the season!

There was a lot to theorize about and talk about this episode -- but Mika definitely has her work cut out with this dynamic duo and the threat of the "foxes" looms over the season more and more...let's GO!

Loved the reaction & discussion! The Word of the Day in the discussion was ‘meanwhile’ 😂 – honestly, accurate, because this was a very ‘meanwhile’ kind of episode. Loved Irie’s interactions in this episode: ruffling all the feathers, pulling out his Dominator at every opportunity, annoying Kunizuka, etcetc. Also, jump-scaring Tenma for no reason other than to be a bit of a troll! 😂 And cannot move past the episode without acknowledging Frederica appearing again! 🥰 (Disclaimer here: bear with me on this one and this isn’t coming up out of your previous discussions, just another thing that’s sadly been my experience in the fandom.) This ep actually contains something tangential which I’ve held back on since S1 – regarding the ‘compatibility’ ratings. Something that comes up often after Kunizuka’s backstory episode in S1 - is the idea that Kunizuka’s hue started clouding when she … “discovered” same-sex attraction or due to this “discovery.” And, oh boy, do I have a bug in my craw about it. For one, there is nothing to suggest that from Kunizuka’s point of view. For two, nothing to suggest Sibyl would care. For three, a multitude of things to confirm Sibyl’s desire for total control through ‘total happiness.’ For four (and understandable in terms of people not knowing), Urobuchi et al have discussed this in interviews + S1-2 profiling artbooks, etc – same-sex marriage is legal, no distinctions made. To quote a part of a Q&A which asked about this: “all families are the result of what the Sibyl System has deemed would be optimal happiness for them, no matter the form.” I don’t think when people posit that particular reasoning regarding Kunizuka it reaches the level of being offensive – but it definitely skirts the periphery for me. Because ‘of course’ that’s what did it. Because of course that’s where their mind goes in terms of a reason for a hue clouding. Not at all the very obvious and very deliberate narrative around unsanctioned and subversive art, questioning the status quo and rebelling against the system, etc, etc. Beyond that, it is just another indicator of casual erasure. And I largely blame media where the only queer stories are those where someone is struggling to accept themselves, where internalised homophobia is shown as the only and the most true experience. So I’m glad this little scene was included and I can use it as direct evidence in the text + it provided food for my Irie/Hinakawa ship. 😂 /endrant I’ve really enjoyed in recent discussions the extra focus on acknowledging the evolution of the world, how Sibyl operates and judges, changing approaches to people working on their hues. I love that this world is not static - I think narratives where the external world is largely the same but the characters within it move have their place, but I especially love a developing world like this. Looking forward to next week! 💙

Shindo: I'm totally fine. Cue demonic fox creature. Yeah *totally* fine Shindo. It's usually not a good thing when the red spider lilies make an appearance in anime or donghua. Kisaragi getting a bouquet of them alongside a card that has a fox on it definitely makes your suspicious radar go off. And yes, the flowers are symbolic of death, goodbyes, and sombre memories. Auma mentioning self-immolation, alongside learning that he is a Buddhist, automatically made me think of the Vietnamese monk in the 60s protesting against the persecution of Buddhists by the government of the time. Within the beliefs of Buddhism, I believe that such an action is not considered suicide but rather a physical sacrifice often used to protest against something. I really love with the design of the immigrants, Psycho-Pass have gone out of their way to show a good mix and range of ethnicities and backgrounds. Shindo saying that prejudice comes from ignorance is very similar to the problems the characters have had throughout the series when it comes to history repeating itself. In this case the ignorance is due to the lack of education on various religions for the native Japanese, and a better awareness of various faiths and their individual and intertwined histories. Can I say how much I adore that Shion's first concern on helping Shindo to bring in Kunizuka to help them was her girlfriend's safety 🥺 I love their relationship so much. Also I *really* need more of Kunizuka and Irie. They definitely don't play the game the same way. But I like that Shindo just lets Irie go on with his rougher and abrupt attitude, rather than backing up Kunizuka on chiding him for his remarks and questions. The brute force approach can sometimes lead to noticing or learning some pivotal information after all. Just like Shindo's comment about his file leading to Irie accidentally admitting to them having read his file 😆 But other times a softer approach like Kunizuka's could prove more beneficial. Lot of rumours going around in this episode...starting to feel like Mo Dao Zu Shi in trying to decide if the gossipmongers speak truth or falsities 😂 I am evil but I laughed at you getting jump scared by Irie 🤣 He really is a little sh*t! Never thought with my dislike of Mika in Season 2 that by Season 3 I'd actually sympathise with her and feel sorry for her having to deal with these two stress-inducers that are Shindo and Kei 😂 Also I need both her Pez dispenser and one of those holos as a stress ball! 😆 Thank you Sibyl System for giving me the potential of yet another ship thanks to the Compatibility Assessment! Kei is a happily married man so sorry Kisaragi, you're out of luck there. But Irie, I have great news for you! You and Hinakawa could be very happy together 🥰😂 Ishikawa's voice in this is definitely quite different from some of the anime you've seen him voice characters in. The intonation and more breathy quality really helps show off Ishikawa Kaito's skills. Shindo is definitely very good at making himself seem very innocent and harmless to make people drop their guard around him. I agree with you that I love that Psycho-Pass made one of our main characters an immigrant. It's definitely not often done, especially when a topic like racism is being brought up, but it's a highly effective method of making that side of the plot have such heavy relevance to our characters and not just having the main characters be external factors looking on at the societal problem. I'm afraid I can't help with the translation of the book. All I know is that it's in Danish I believe. Always enjoy your discussions!

How have I missed this comment!? Nooooo! There was a LOT going on in this episode, that’s for sure! Irie was really great with interactions in this – what a ham, too – he is definitely a troll! Ooooh, REALLY?! I forgot what I talked about in the discussion at this point (there’s been so much) but that is really sad that someone could have suggested that same-sex attractions would have clouded a hue – I could see, if the Sybil System wasn’t for marriages of all forms - someone suggesting that the negative interactions with people who were disapproving of those relationships (like is sadly seen in real life) leading to a hue clouding – that would make sense, but the relationship itself, I definitely agree any suggestions that THAT is a hue-clouder is BS. I LOVE that they say that about same sex marriages – wow, just in time for Pride month; I’ll have to bring that up in a future discussion! I also like how you used it to bring up Irie and Hinakawa as a ship! I would have never expected it because they are SOOOOO different in personalities and interactions, but if this system is suggesting it would work, it’s a pleasant surprise! Start the construction! And yessss, the idea of this world building and the callbacks from season 1 still carrying weight and evolving up until this point in the series is really well received by me at this point! Thank you for the kind words and comment! I am SO excited for the rest of this season!

Shindo’s delusion this episode, RIGHT?! And yeah, the spider lilies! I didn’t realize it was that when I was doing the reaction, but then it hit me…definitely not a good sign! Yes, that image of the protester on fire definitely comes to mind! The discussion of immigration in this season and the DIVERSITY of the cast is seriously IMPRESSIVE. And again, the Sybil System erasing prior history definitely has had an impact and not made this any better a situation. And Shion and Kunizuka is SO sweet – I love Irie being the subject of both being seen as the “secret softie” but also the “failed troll.” I love Kunizuka being able to interact with all these characters! But how dare Irie jump scare me! AHAHAHA, the connection to MDZS! All we need now is someone to pull out a fan and smack it open! 😛Shame Makishima is gone… I thought about you when I was talking about Mika this week because I am WITH YOU – I felt the validation when you were so against her in Season 2, because I thought so similar, but I admit that I felt for her here in this episode! She has matured and grown on me – but I agree, I want her Pez dispenser and the stress ball – the stress ball FOR SURE! I would have NEVER imagined Irie and Hinakawa together; they are SO polar opposite, but I’m not above the ship – get the boat making supplies out I suppose! And yeah, Kisaragi has no luck with happily-married Kei. And yessssssss, Shindo is sooo clever to seem so innocent and sweet (harmless) but then it disguises his prowess! And Kei being an immigrant and getting HIS perspective as part of the main character duo works so well! Look at you, Psycho-Pass for being fresh and fun! The book is DANISH!? OOHHHH interesting – well, at least there’s that! Thank you for the kind words and comment! 😀
