Some people need those numbers to feel whole. The question I'm asking is, whether the MC should get the system back, and if so, how?

I'm thinking the external device can be some kind of living charm that uses blood to show you your status with an old-timey magic feel to it.

I have two ideas that might be similar to what you're planning. (Unable to put new lines because of mobile) First idea is to have this God that the others are afraid of give him an offer to regain what he lost. The second is to go back and have the gods change casuality itself to make it so that no one remembers him or what he accomplished. So that all the gains he made of making allies is useless, which would arguable be just as bad of an issue as not having the system. One high leveled person still needs to sleep/eat/drink. One man is not an army, and you could set things up to require him having an army to avoid losing everything to the incoming alien galactic players. I do like the idea of him gaining most on his own, but the problem is that you stated earlier that people aren't able to see faeries until they hit 10 must and he started lower than that. So he'd be staring at a lot of candy bars with a lot of nosebleeds for a hot fucking minute before actually showing any sort of growth, unless you want people to be able to gain body/myst/nerve by doing simple things.

I like the idea that he jury-rigs a system, like he did in the tutorial with the lenses.

I do enjoy the idea of him making some painful to use janky ass duct taped Macguyvered abomination to read his stats.

Anonymous

Maybe he gets a reward from the god of rewards that gives a rudimentary system that he disassemble and makes absolutely badass like upgrading a 90s computer with modern equipment

RepossessedSoul

Could try using a hospital pulse monitor, a blood pressure cuff, and an MRI machine to take snapshots of his current state and then find differences.

I want Jeb to make his own System with snide remarks and flimsy excuses for the human condition. He makes it with crazy triggers that make the lense system look like children building castles in the sand before a high tide, by the time someone is onto him they are so washed away it scares them off.

Jeremy Humphrey

Tbh I like that it feels like he may need to work to be the biggest badass once again. (Like he was at the end of the tutorial) but it also feels bad to see progress lost. I would be fine with him only having limited access to the system as long as we still get to feel like his progress ment something. Another option is to give smart-ass a method to read/manipulate his stats. The whole dynamic of him asking her to do x and her doing what she wants would be quote funny.

I think it might be more interesting to either have a jury-rigged system or be outside of the system and go into the only "natural talent " thing

Arnon Parenti

Also got all the other POVs for crunch, would be funny to see Jeb through their eyes, the system tells them he is lvl 1 nobody, their hearts tell them he is The Jeb, their eyes see him lifting an adult dragon with one hand while twirling a pongo stick to make it laugh. Freeman is hearing some goons planning to rob a rando lucky enough to have real Chocolate in his lobby, he follows, to save the unlucky feller, then he sees it's Jeb they are going to rob, he slowly backs away while taking out a towel and never let's Jeb out of his sight, the blood splatter is artistic, Freeman feels lucky to escape with his life.

so did they just remove the interface leaving his stats and abilities inaccessible or did they remove the system and his abilities are locked?

Just got spoiled :D

Weeb Dealer

I like the numbers and status screens, and I would have rather he didn't lose it in the first place, or if he did, it was in a fashion that made the fact that it can be re-obtained later obvious to the reader. If that isn't the case however, I think it would make more sense from a storytelling perspective for it to stay gone.

Macronomicon

more exposition fluff around the removal, plus built in hint that it's not gone, gone. got it.

Honestly I want to see a Smartass solution. Considering the shock on for the operators, who knows how outside people will react. She shouldn't be under the restrictions of the tutorial to spread information so I'm sure Jeb can ask her stuff after making a feeble attempt himself. I'm sure she should be an integral part of his "rehabilitation".

Anonymous

Far more interesting to stick with the consequences, otherwise what was the point of the last chapter?

Pastor Joubert

Loss of a system can be a very good development - Like when Garth lost the aid of his goddesses power. Thats kind of “system” like - although that particular magic system had no “system”.

Ethan Gardner

Personally I'm not fussed on him having or not having access to the system. If you decide for him not to have it or at least not be able to use it as it seems to be an integral part of this new reality, then you will have to eventually give him something to bring him in line with everyone else. At first he can keep ahead and not dead with wits but eventually him being stuck at basically level 1 will screw him over. I do like the idea that he makes his way without the level system though, it would make for a nice twist on the system apocalypse. Seems possible he would be able to use the potions still or stat boosting equipment even if he can't access the system as I assume the system alters reality itself and him being in reality means he can't truly be removed from it, only denied access. Means they have only denied him tool tips, levels, titles and other system boosts while items and potions that have a physical effect would still work. Would be cool to look at how different his experience would be. For example in a store no signs necessary as everyone can identify, so he would have to find a way to get the information without letting on he can't see it as that would make him very unpopular.

Kirvin

The main concern I would have about the loss of the system is the "Mystic Trapsmith" flavor of Jeb's magic. I'm pretty confident it will still be good regardless though.

Kemizle

Jeb should lose the system but jury rig a device to read his stats and the approximate level of people...and names of items Jeb’s development should focus around attuning his body to his myst and figuring out how to do mystic trapper stuff without the system. And finally build equipment to cover everything else like armor weapons utility stuff really play up the trap smith part

Kemizle

Armor should have a type of exoskeleton to cover for body, device to help process info to cover for nerve, and then he can focus on just accumulating myst to his core

A disgruntled nondescript squirrel

it would be hilarious if smartass became somehow linked to his system. She could be his smart ass system fairy "HEY LISTEN!"

Hmmm I was thinking... maybe if he made his own system? Somehow? Path to divinity? I’m all for the idea of a guy being smart enough to make and use tools... but I think it would be a pretty big leap for him to bypass DIVINE restrictions by just using a external tool.. I think him relying on his own potential is more believable than him just lucking into a item that does it all for him. I really liked the vibe at the end of the chapter when he snipped back at them for telling him he had no natural talent, him proving them wrong was great. At the end of the day. What makes him a compelling character though. Is it his mentality and wit? Or is he just lucky and finds a item to rely on? Like Excalibur? Side note... keeping Smartass with him = easy epic ness. A super smart foil.🤣 Also... It would not let me post all that from my phone, so I had to e-mail myself this whole post and then go to my desktop computer to post it. XD always happy to give my opinion to a fellow Alaskan writer. #Drivesafethesnowbedumpin. Also, I can see from the poll my viewpoint is in the minority. That being said... Maybe some type of combination between him getting the system back/using a external device and natural talent? Idk... That is a lot to unpack and I have a hard time picturing what it would look like.

Silver Beard

Mab restores his access. Self evolving paradox. The ‘gods’ punish him for being Mab’s pawn only pushing him to that very thing to regain his powers. Ofc the divinities underestimating human willpower has a nice ring too. He bested the impossible tutorial...how much worse overcoming divine edict.

Althaelus

Think it would be nice if he just measured his stats instead of having an easy way to increase them or tried to make his own system. After all the system had to work off of some kind of principle not just god handwavium so it would make sense he would try to find the root of increasing your nerve, body, and myst so he could do it himself.

The stripping of the system felt forced as hell. Also makes us feels like the entire progression done in the tutorial was meaningless. Like a 23 chapters long prologue.

Jess_2037

So what’s the release schedule for this story for 5 tier patrons? How soon will the extra chapters be up?

nym

For my part the story is much more interesting if he operates outside of the System. Operating within it dictates he be bound by it, which is at least to some degree a limitation on what he might eventually achieve.

Notcreepycreeper

I actually really appreciated having the system ripped away. It was abrupt, but in a good way - it signified a new stage, and an evolution of the story. It shows that the tutorial was an artificial construct in a lot of ways compared to this new world. Also it lets Jeb explore new things, rather than just powermleveling to get +1s for his must.

So are you still writing for Wake Of The Ravager? It's been a minute since you've updated for it and was my main reason for signing up for your patreon.

P.s. don't mean to sound like a cunt, genuine question.

SunderGoldmane

It seems the goal was to make a pure mage character and explore all the handicaps that come with such a build along side all the immense power. In that scenario I think not having access to the system while still becoming a very powerful mage is a good story. I do however like the idea of him circumventing the gods and reconnecting to the system just to one up them. Maybe if he does reconnect you could impose a “read-only” limitation where he is not granted power by the system but instead only able to use it to measure his own power gains.

Samuel McCarren

One of the strengths of the story was the simplicity of its numbers when compared to other system stories, although I believe the story would be just as strong without them it might feel a bit disjointed in the long run to switch it up in the middle for one guy because 'divine intervention'. Little too deus ex machina way of managing power creep.
