I'm putting together a new LitRPG and this time I want to put way more forethought into it (Don't worry I'm still trucking on Outer Sphere)

Anyway, I've come to a bit of an impasse when it comes to stats. I'm wavering between two setups.

Breaking down physical and mental stats into 3 parts (like the outer spheres,)

Strength

Speed

Endurance

Intelligence

Senses

Memory

The alternative is going much simpler by making three stats: Body, Mind, and Bent and making each point have a large, quantifiable effect on the character's abilities.

in this new series it should be rather Hard for people to gain levels, so I'm leaning toward going simplified, but feel free to chime in or suggest your own stat system.

But hey, if you guys want the six stat system, I'll whip out the excel spreadsheets and we'll make this bitch happen.

Also if you have any suggestion for how skills should be capped or affected by stats, feel free to chime in.

There is little connection between ease of earning levels and amount of stats. What concerns stats is the number of points per level. If there is a lot of stats value of points goes up. Three stat system seems far too vague to be interesting.

hmmm, I see.. as for the stats per level up. I, umm.. I'm not sure yet. I'm thinking somewhere around 15-20% per level if you practice the stat, and you can only practice so many per level. like 3 or something.

BTdubs, I think I'm gonna take Intelligence out of the game. Simply because I can't write a superhuman intelligence and I'm a little tired of getting shit for the character not seeing everything coming a mile away. the Character will still BE intelligent, but there won't be a number there that people can yell at me for.

I think having the system show 3 stats but have sub stats/categories like the 6 above that never get a number so some one may have 50 mind but most of the training was focused on memory rather than critical thinking so they are still dumb. Have the system more general and averaged vs super detailed and nity gritty. Would simplify some managing of the system also.

I'm refraining from choosing an option just because it depends on the story for me. If your going more wuxia style then the mind body and spirit stuff sounds good. But litrpg to me was always more MMO like woth stat blocks and such. So short answer....i unno.

Simple but nuanced seems best imo

I have a lot in interesting ideas buttt... that’s because I’m currently thinking about doing some writing myself and I’ve been thinking up a system for it so I can’t share unless I decided to give up on it 😬 (bright side is my system ‘10’ based (everything comes in multiples of ten for the most part) so ya probably wouldn’t find it useful for your project anyways but I’d say if you do the three stat system maybe break it down into sub stats or something

I always thought it was odd for the system to tell the user their current physical stats. I seemed like this is stuff that they could easily figure out themselves. I it makes sense to tell the mental stats, because it is far harder to figure out for yourself to what degree you are smarter. I think the attributes should be. Empathy Intelligence Willpower Creativity Perception Memory Muscle Memory Focus

different word for mana with different connotations. kind of mana but also a little XP, and a little bad and warp-y and maybe makes you go crazy. decided to leave the M-word behind because it's got a lot of baggage, while Bent can be my own thing.

how about a set of stats with some not being changeable or have them intrinsically set and only through some form of milestone be changeable. like increments of 10 levels to gain a separate stat pool point. Make basic stats easy to gain but with minor effects like gaining a point in strength only give a small overall boost but gaining a point in memory be a qualitative change.

oh or a sanity stat, higher it is the less your bent is like a debuff instead of being a positive for magic. Less sane you are the easier it is to ignore the rules of reality and change them the way you are bent

could make the intelligence more purpose focused instead of social intelligence. Most of the smartest people I've ever met can do high level calculus but can't figure out how to talk to people or understand how to talk to people, and a brilliant physist doesn't mean your a good chemist or engineer. Love the story so far.

Whatever you do, don't make it so that you only understand progress through the numbers. Many many readers (including me) skip right past the stat screens. We want to read how, why, and when, not be told what is essentially possible. This is especially important, because none of us will ever grasp it like the writer. If you go out to a car race, would you rather see the cars drive 250+ km/h, or be told by the commentator that the Ferrari would win because it's the better car? Exactly.

Why not simply use the rules from the Pen & Paper "FATAL"
