Need a good 4th floor raid boss.

A raid boss is a giant fuck-off monster that doesn't linger around the Key sit but instead meanders around wherever the heck it likes.

2nd floor had Rocs, 3rd floor had fiery death-curtains of stars, 4th Floor has...?

I want one, because the only difficulty the current line-up has is with each other, because as a group of 7, they're somewhat overqualified for the 4th Floor.

So I'd like raid boss suggestions, please.

I keep going back to giant snake and it just doesn't feel right. I wanna save giant snek for the 7th floor Immortal Serpent.

Big swamp alligator

Jeremy Farnham

Giant Alligator, or possible swarm of giant mosquitoes

Kronos

Giant Slime (or something similarly boneless, except for the bones it’s currently dissolving ie it ate them, to make Alicia struggle to see it during the fight)

Steffen

Giant Platypus, with nasty venom spurs it shoots out

Seadrake

Big swamp elemental type thing. Muck, Mulch, and Vines forming a vaguely bipedal figure. Depending on how big it gets it would carry around some smaller monsters.

Matt M

Could do a hydra, Some sort of ent like being or hill sized swamp monster. Maybe a walking insect hive.

PlasmaticPi

Shambling Mound made of bodies of dead climbers with some of their powers. As the thing gets damaged it loses bodies and their powers but gains the ones of the bodies further in, which are always more powerful as a survival mechanism.

Opportunity Drive

First thing that came to mind for a giant fuck off monster in a swamp was a Hippo. I'm imagining world turtle style giant hippo with whole ecosystems living on it coming alive to defend the Host. Helicopter poos to level buildings, and a charge attack that would make a t Rex run away. (Charge attack style relic drop for will?)

Pararably

What about a Giant version of a Diglet type monster from Pokémon?

Got Heem 11

Maybe something thats a natural predator to insects. Giant spider, giant frog, giant vampire bat.

Joshua Gunty

Fungal monster, it's mycelium spreads throughout the fourth floor and tripping it can cause the raid boss to rapidly grow like a mushroom on steroids. The longer the team lets it grow the larger and harder to kill it becomes.

In-Game_Name

A giant fungal wave that devours everything in its path. Or a worm queen that produces vast quantities of swamp vampire worms and travels with a practical army of the things

Jake Malony

I have no idea what your plan is with your world building, but what about humanoid enemies? Maybe a hyper powerful cleric and faithful bodyguard a la demon soul's swamp level. Maybe they've lost their minds/souls in some way and now wander the 4th floor purging corruption wherever they find it. Alternatively, biiiig slug

Gaunt

For magical threat, you could go for a worm-that-walks. Body of a caster that dies then gets eaten by carrion critters. Soul possess's the swarm and hammers them into a vaguely humanoid form. Very hard to kill, magical threat. Baba Yaga hutt would probably be a good physical threat.

Darren Deloach

Algae monster? Story wise something that would involve all of the 7 for bonding. Swamp hag/troll?

Kenny

Hydra? That might be a little overpowered for floor 4, but they are classically essentially immortal unless their heads are lopped off and the stumps seared. Giant tortoise? Not sure that's actually a swamp creature but it's magic turtle who knows. Pretty sure in real life alligators and snakes are the apex swamp predators. Nothing wrong with reflecting that in the tower.

garlic

Big chungus monster

Mariposa

Hydras are swamp monsters. Like what Hercules killed. Could also show any mistakes on team work if someone cuts off a head when they're not supposed to. Or someone could sabotage them. Another idea is the nosoi. They were the Greek personified spirits (daimones) of plague, sickness and disease. They could be a wandering boss monster that inflicts a devastating plague that can wipe they floor if even one adventurer survives an encounter with it.

Gibby

Giant water Elemental snake. It pretends to be a river Or a massive turtle that looks like dry land with trees on its back.

chris

Yowie: Australian Cryptid. Basically a huge fast mossy furred mandrill.

Joshua Gunty

Mob's can be finally infected dead or half dead things from the floor being puppeted by main monster.

Jack

Or like a Halo Hunter-esque colony of the swamp vampire worms

Ethan Gardner

Could do something like a swamped up version of the leshin from the witcher that controls insect swarms instead of birds. If you want to stick to reptiles maybe a lizard similar to vaal hazak in monster hunter, he would fit right into the themes of the 4th floor. Would have to nerf him down from being a dragon though. Have some lesser versions wonder around feeding of his kills would give some adds to fight as well

Mariposa

No actually I changed my mind. A corrupted river spirit like from spirited away.

Kor

A few ideas. An island of mud that moves at night and hides the creature below (big turtle style) A giant alligator with a toxic breath attack A humanoid swamp monster hosting insects swarms in its body (algea hair, long limbs, slack belly, that sort) A big ball of decaying plant matter that rolls around and crush everything in its path Just what I can think of. Hope it helps ?

BIGLARGEFISH

Hmmm maybe a giant tortoise infected with a colony of worms and mosquitoes who attack in swarms around it

Jake Malony

Maybe it's not any one monster but instead a fungal infection ( like zombies from the last of us) that has linked and empowered multiple powerful enemies across the floor with a hidden core/root that must be purged

David Weller

Why not a malboro from Final Fantasy? A giant Venus fly trap, basically, with a huge mouth with a lot of sharp teeth. And it has a special attack called "bad breath" that will give you a ton of different CC effects such as silenced, sleeped, poisoned and cursed all at once.

Big casino

Could go demons souls make a whole bunch of leeches into a shapeshifting elemental. The leeches have been ubiquitous to this floor.

Leeland

A giant raincloud or maybe a living tidal wave that moves about the swamp. Basically a giant weather Elemental that is the reason the whole level is as wet and as humid as it is.

Jake Malony

A legion of venomous eels/tentacles that end up being the phalanges of a giant amoeba-like ooze monster

Jacob

It's all about a swamp and poison and stuff, so maybe a mud elemental type thing? That may be a little too on the nose. Spiders are also associated with poison and debuffs, have a great big Shelob ambush them or something.

LordDark

Relic Wyrm- giant worm shaped like an alligator with wings and legs. It is coated in Relic armor.

Sands

Swamp monster with each section of the monster being a different creature or group of creatures from the 4th floor. It blends in to the rest of the floor unless it attacks or is moving fast.

Red Viking

Giant crocodile with steel scales and teeth that spews toxic gas, which it can then set on fire by snapping its jaw shut.

person1357

master swamp vampire... because of course it's a swamp vampire

Jehru

I'm wondering if anything like a swamp treant colony. Like if a mangrove patch moved around, making fertilizer of the smaller floor monsters or unfortunate climbers,

Alex

I'm wondering if there's gotta be some mechanic that makes large groups have a harder time of it. Otherwise everyone would be running around in huge armies. Yeah, the group size here basically doubled, there needs to be something that balances that; ideally it's a known thing in-universe.

xyphion

Crocnado?

Sebin Paul

Maybe a swamp hag, or something similar? It could enthrall vamps or other creatures to use as its meatshields, while it operates as a Leader/nuker.

luxrus

Mega slime. Just… a moving poisonous lake

Daemion

How about a swamp dragon? Not a true dragon, just some pseudo variant, but still extremely dangerous. Noxious fumes, thick scales, claws... Or a huge, shambling plant monster that is basically just a bunch of tentacles? Grabbing everything in range and using it to grow larger while it moves slowly around the area. Perhaps submerged and thus hidden during its rest periods? Maybe it spawns minions? Or if you want to break with the "boss = large" tradition, maybe a single, small enemy? Perhaps something super fast and deadly that's just skimming on top of the water, going *through* its targets to kill them? Perhaps something that relies on psychic damage? A Will-o'-the-wisp, floating seemingly aimlessly through the swamp (swarm of many small lights or one big one?)... immune to most damage and uses flames that do psychic damage to attack its foes? Maybe an island-sized alligator that is home to some symbiotic species? Insects or birds that form a swarm around it and screen it from attacks?

sata

Make the boss counter some of them. Poisonous lake elemental with weak core

Elijah Huyck

The Leechmonger from Demon Souls. It's a vaguely humanoid clump of leeches all voltron'd together. Make it huge, regenerating, and give it hemokinesis.

sata

Or maybe no core but have to weaken through some environmental manipulation?

Alex Matheny

Id argue group size is nerfered by loot distribution and logistic requirements

EDMANGO

I like the idea of a roving colony of treants or some sort of swamp monster that pretends to be trees and has a lot of tentacles trying to root stuff in place to take advantage of catching vamps or anything else that likes to ambush. It's an ambush ambusher!

Elijah Huyck

Bonus points if it can wiggle your own blood in your body, that's always immensely uncomfortable.

Mariposa

In higher floors I'd imagine it's resource scarcity. An army moves on its stomach after all.

Josh Cothran

Huge mosquito is the only right answer

gray matter

Now a swamp (poison, gas, acid) aspect hydra could be an interesting raid boss

Jeff Gaebler

Cajun swamp people with gators and coons as attack pets! Lol

Mariposa

Or I was thinking to challenge their large party a group of sirens, mermaids or harpies might be good. They traditionally have a potent sleep or mesmerizing effect that takes out large groups.

s476

How about a fungus that's subtaranrn mostly

Jeff Wells

I second the idea of leaches. For this floor I like the idea of taking something that's ordinarily mostly a nuisance and making them actually terrifying. You could combine it with a few of the other ideas and make it some kind of immortal/incorporeal creature that builds a body based on the local creatures. So maybe last time it was "killed" it had built a body of writhing vines and vegetation. This time it's a horde of leaches. Next time it might take over an entire grove of tree monsters, etc. So the danger is you've got to prepare for a mega version of one of your regular floor that's, but you may not know what it is specifically when you go out.

Matt

Yeah maybe it could even be the unique vampire progenitor for the vamps of the swamp

Robert Amundson

An island that's a mimic trap. Lures with Dead body with loot ooo snap eats anyone dumb enough to walk on it.

Chris Gast

A hill sized turtle, massively strong on defense, with a small ecology on its back. Aside from it stretching out its neck and biting through adventurers and trees, the back is likely to be home to other threats, probably swarms of either bugs or birds. If bugs, then Loth might get something nice. If birds, they probably have powerful piercing attacks they use to keep the turtle shell clean of parasites that would bore in.

ootrouble101oo

A giant slug thats coated in a poisonous mucus, maybe make it resistant to fire/explosions

Callum Melly

Tiny alligator, unassuming but unnervingly fast and agile.

Kevin Spock

Bigfoot with mud and water bending abilities. Think the hicks from Avatar the last air bender.

Cuban Pete

A gigantic swamp vampire that has a parasitic relationship with the leeches that causes it to lose all the blood it gains from kills to the leeches thus forcing it to constantly search for prey in an aggressive and bezerk manner as it is always on the brink of starvation

Paratus

Giant crawfish. Like massive. =P

Ano Ano

Swamp Thing, but the size of a giant. Human shaped, capable of using tools, made of rotting and living vegetation. Absorbing vegetation to heal itself. A real problem.

Matthew Davis

How about the skunk ape: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skunk_ape Famed monster of the Florida Everglades, big, nasty and too cunning by half.

Pseudo

Is that even a question?! Giant swamp hydra obviously!

Pseudo

And now I realize other people also are saying hydras. Proof it’s a great choice ig.

Cyrus McEnnis

A tiny white rabbit would have been my call, but you used that already. Lessee. A swamp biome, disease centric floor. Could do a swarm boss, rats would fit the theme. Baba Yaga's hut, or a variant thereof (Baba Yaga's double-wides is a personal favorite). Swamp Hydra would work. Grootslang or Bunyip if you want to get exotic. Given you wanna stay away from a snek, the Grootslang variant I'd use is "a four-tusked green-skinned elephant with ram-like horns and a spiked snake-like tail"

DrFumbles

A hydra variant. Possibly add an unusual element like lightning or ice to make it both more unusual for the floor / hydras and more dangerous on the floor.

Jake

Leech swarm/hive mind

Exolious

A very large crane (bird)

Thomas Issa

Bunyip would add variety and could be used in many ways such as aquakinesis, physical attacks, scales, inflict diseases, and have mental luring effects, which could make a very interesting fight and upgrade other party members in interesting ways but hydras typically are in swamps and they would be useful for Will upgrading aspect of the goat

Selkie

Fungus beast. Huge spore clouds, slow moving but converts everything nearby to fight it - bug included… - and the poisons are deadly. Frankly it might wipe the party if you’re not careful…

Chad Burnett

How can you have a Swamp and not a crocodile as the boss? Or make it dun and make it a hydra crocodile

ArchonUmbra

Really big Horned Toad. Like large hill sized. With human sized toads spawning out of its skin focused on fog or poison clouds. Or some sort of amphibian like a Huge Newt or Axolotl with water powers that could drown whole stretches of the floor.

ImYou

Giant crab or lobster like elden ring

ArchonUmbra

Echoing what others are saying, a hydra varient would be cool. Like a Axolotl Hydra with extreme regeneration that requires continuous debuffs to finally kill, but it doesn’t stay dead Zombie Hydra Phase two.

Alex Matheny

What if it were a storm elemental? Raises water level nearby making aquatics more dangerous. Feduced flame abilities that most people will have some of from last floor, raid and wind reduced visability making ground even worse, as well as making ambushes from other mobs more viable and deadly

Treim

poisonous swamp grasshopper - mega agile and hinders mobility by influencing terrain or more classically poisonous Hydra variant

Manuel valdez

A cajun hillbilly siren that mesmerize climbers with banjo playing

kfir with a כ

A giant mud slime. I always liked the idea that slimes aren't weak monsters but actually nightmares to fight

Meowgrr

A giant giraffe. It can walk easily across the swamp waters and it would be totally unexpected!

JhanicManifold

Maybe The Swamp Thing? A HULK-like humanoid that patrols the swamp and smashes everything it encounters?

Exrotes

An Elephant

Benjamin Collins

I'm thinking a giant turtle with a shell that's actually a hive and they defeat the hive only to find out the turtle itself is the boss and he's all passive until the end when they defeat the hive or maybe monsters living in his shell and then finally reacts after there all defeated by thanking them somehow

RedInkQuill

A giant leech that is really just made up of smaller leeches. Some sort of hive monster

Cyrus McEnnis

Truckzilla suddenly came to mind, given the Hi-Tech we saw teased way back in the Establishing Quest. Kaiju-sized Trash Panda. Or cockroach.

Derek Engols

Has anyone mentioned Wyvern's yet? I saw hydra and gators. But honestly, the thought of something that can just take a party member and fly off while you're dealing with everything slowing you down is kind of fucked. Like what are you supposed to do against that? Can't chase it easily you got swamp to deal with, and that solo party member isn't going to be well equipped to do something. Also gives you thoughts on sacrifices for dragon subspecies and their lore.

Big casino

Hear me out. Leech hydra. Blood sucking regen and poison

Dash Marley

Giant Sword-Beak Heron. legs like tree trunks, capable of sending people flying with gusts of wind from its wings, spearing people with its beak

Dee

I nominate the deadly hippo, responsible for more deaths per year than lions, alligators, coconuts, or poisonous snakes: https://youtu.be/mfPCFQfOnLg?si=eyRfe8GVNx3tIlxo

Summers Mori

I like the hive mind ideas. Some kind of hive mind treant? They can kill one super treant, thinking its the raid boss, only to find that the entire swamp was the raid boss. Kind of how like mangrove trees look like an entire forest, but they all have an interconnected root system, and are really just the same tree.

God

have mega eel, and it will give them an op ranger item

Meowgrr

What about a giant dragonfly that can turn on a dime and drops giant crap from above?

Dee

On the opposite end of the spectrum, how about an Axolotl: https://youtu.be/bFkIG9S2Mmg?si=0R03nokqu_i19ciR

True_Reaper

You can have the key site in the middle of a swamp (fighting in water always nerfs everyone) with a water raid monster. I know that kinda prevents it from roaming around but maybe underground swamp networks? Suggestion Sethricon Sethricon is a massive, ancient swamp leviathan that lurks in the dark, toxic depths beneath the water. This mythical creature manipulates the swamp around it, making the environment itself an enemy as it drags adventurers into its deadly, venomous domain. • Venomous Maelstrom: Sethricon creates a vortex of poisoned water, pulling enemies toward it while dealing continuous poison damage and slowing their movement. • Living Mire: The swamp becomes sentient, with vines and tendrils rising to entangle and suffocate enemies, immobilizing them and dealing constant damage. • Primordial Regeneration: While submerged, Sethricon rapidly heals by absorbing the swamp’s natural energies, forcing adventurers to keep constant pressure to prevent its recovery.

alex ayala

Dude gelatinous cube. Regen+ acid blood and AOE area denial with slime balls

Tate Browder

Giant fuck off hellgrammite that they think is the raid boss- turns out it’s the larval form and its parent a psychic powered dobsonfly shows up

Edmund McGough

I'm thinking a Baba Yaga style cottage with stalk legs. Mimic style boss, once they get to the front door it bursts open and a giant beak pops out, then it stands up 3 stories tall on stork legs to try and crush them, is weirdly quick and agile for a house.

Melody Haren Anderson

You know what is a classic? Giant island turtle. There's a strangely safe seeming lightly wooded island in the swamp...

Fleisch

A airborne bacteria that enters their bodies and breaks it down. The way to get rid of it is to destroy its source which would be some kind of tree or plant.

Joe ?

A supercharged will o' wisp. Regular wisps are small ghostly lights that subtly lure you into a swamp to down. This is a pale blue sun that brute forces the process, by arriving suddenly with a roar of flame, and demanding you march towards it.

Finn

Maybe like a giant mycelium network that can worm its way through the ground and then create different kind of mushrooms as attacks ie ones that can extend like tentacles to grab or swipe, some could release dangerous spores that induce hallucinations, some could just explode or maybe shoot acid streams. How it moves could just be growing into a specific direction while the mass behind it just dies. Which could create a separate hazard or environment behind where it’s been depending on how you want to take it. It could either have a main core that needs to be destroyed or if not might need to be whittled down bit by bit or killed by staking too many debuffs or poisons

Jacob

A Giant Rot Troll. Has the abilities of a normal troll i.e. extreme regeneration, but is packed to the brim full of insects, maggots and diseases. Basically if you didnt build up any immunity earlier in the floor then youll be out like a light shortly.

Dax

Swamp Hydra

Sebastian Lindqvist

Rot toad with spawn and lightning fast sticky tung :)

PJ LeBlanc

Mangrove Treant with salt/dehydrating attacks and bloodsucking vines

van eisley

It has to be a Godzilla alligator

David Burchfield

Giant Slime Mold, huge network, does annoying acid, poison, disease, debuffs and stacks them until it can absorb and eat things. Takes wide area damage and a big raid group to counter or just the right types of poison or disease (since it is immune to most).

Mason W

Don’t miss the chance to make this Will’s arch nemesis- the only think that could live in a stank swamp: Evil Swamp Goat.

John

Having the boss be some kind of giant hive mind suits well with the 4th floor since it's moreso the environment and how monsters can take advantage of it that make it deadly. Maybe something like The Heart of the Swamp that's a small floating wisp that can control all creatures native to the floor. As soon as you encounter it, it hides while summoning hordes of monsters that slow you down as you try to chase it. You could have it set up to be a grueling encounter that Will just trivialises by grabbing the wisp with Phantom Hand early on and gimping the encounter

matt

You know what would be awesome? a Fuck Off huge water strider. Those things can move 100 body lengths per second.

LordDark

More fun idea. Swamp pelican aka a bird known as a Shoebill. Stationary stealth, Flight, Paralyzing Eyes, suction breath, Dimensional Stomach, can use all relics it swallows. Show it swallowing an entire noob party before the fight starts.

LordDark

They can show ther spines through their mouth. Super freaky looking bird.

Aguy

Couple options Sentient Plague/Cortyceps. Think about it like a PvP scenario with additional changing environmental factors. Gigantic Swamps Tree that moves across the bottom of the swamps, changing, hunting, and controlling the environment, turning the encounter into a constantly changing maze with an intelligent and malicious controlled A Giant Tarantula, it can climb, camouflage, hit and run with poison and other effects, cause AOE waves of micro hairs that penetrate then perforate with movement. Swarm Boss, a hivemind of any given enemy, could also be a prime controller. A Lord Boss, considering how annoying swamp vampire's are something like Swamp Vampire Lord that acts a bit like Tamurkhan from Warhammer Fantasy where you kill him at first but he just keeps showing up as different dudes could extend the lifetime of the boss, being able to follow them through floors and causing party kills, potentially even infiltrating the party. The Swamp Itself, Frontier towns start disappearing off of the map and 4th floor gets a whole lot more dangerous, could be an enemy, could be a timed event, could be a search for a control structure whilst constantly bleeding resources and getting THE WORST DISEASES the longer it goes on. Could also shave off some party members that way. just a few ideas

sebsebs

Maybe something like a stinky mushroom that's horrendously offensive but also technically harmless except it has legs and runs very fast if you scare it, while screaming and spreading pheromones that attract every mob in a huge radius Or maybe something very adorable that's completely at odds with the theme of the Floor... and debuffs you every time you try to harm it (or just look at it) ? Maybe actual mental damage ?

sebsebs

Hmmm that doesn't fit the Floor's theme but maybe for future reference : a haunted "suit of armor" monster, that endlessly picks up and adds Relics to its body. As long as n pieces remain, it survives. If there are "conflicts" in the build it can blow up the pieces. Behavior changes everytime you see it/when you re attempt to harm it after failing/during the fight because the Build changes. Maybe make it a time-attack Floor/trial : it spawns "naked" and hunts monsters at the same time as Climbers and if they take too long to take it down it's too dangerous. Maybe it respawns periodically.

Thedevilsdemon

Some middle sized creatur, 6-10 meter tall. Infested (parasitic relationship) with all kinds of swamp creaturs. Abillitys like call of the hord, Jump attack, und somthing like a posions fog breath and or fart. Teeth shouldn't be sharp but insteand more round (for crushing food). Somekind of ooz / root layer skin. I thing of a two legged bull with a large tail (also ideal for smashing).

ImYou

Tree maybe

Donovan

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles evil Bayou uncle Tortoise. All spiked shell with a swamp treehouse Witch living inside making gumbo and having a catfish head and the lord of the swamp vampires as a familiar/boyfriend. Throw in a catfish joke. Have some good Halloween swamp witch loot. shrunken heads. Witches bottles. A HAND OF GLORY! Have her name be Madam something or other / Granny.

Donovan

Andrew Tobin

The main issue with some of these ideas is you’ve shown us vampires, crocodiles, moss etc in recent chapters. I think, since you gave us lumberers (zombie/mummy), mentioned witches, and vampires… you kind of have to give us a wolfman. I don’t make the rules. I really hope it’s a witch. You mentioned swamp witches as a boss in the chapter where they raided the church, and keep mentioning them, but we haven’t seen them. That said, swamp witch with a swamp moose, mimicking princesses and unicorns. Do you like princesses? Having read your other works…. Anyway, I think make a mockery of seeing a princess and a unicorn in a glade, break the illusion and it’s a swamp witch and moose that can negate any swamp movement penalty, can grow its antlers(?) to do melee charge damage (much like our hero) and holds someone underwater with the antlers to drown them. Not actually drown them, but a nice attempted drowning. Also, witch, that can hard negate Alicia by negating ranged weapons, wind, etc.
