I wanted to ask, simply because I've noticed others who write fics and other stories on this site that seem to make quite a bit more than me.

Noticing that, I also noticed that a few of them lock their newest content behind a $10/month paywall. But that seems to work for them as one writer that I saw just yesterday was making over $8,000/month.

Naturally, almost 2/3rds of my own amazing Patrons are at the $1/month Tier here. So, it would feel wrong to suddenly raise prices or lock them out of things that they previously had access to.

But what better people to ask about things like this than my Patrons themselves?

So, my friends and fans, what do you think we could change to improve? Both financially and for your own experience/enjoyment as my Patrons. Should I remove the limit on some of the Higher Tiers? Should I get some other method of enriching the stories going with your help an input? Fanart is an option...but that costs money too. I'm sure you all have thoughts and ideas.

I wouldn't be where I am without you all, so I want to hear from you! What do you all think? Is there a way to increase your enjoyment and the financial earnings?

Is what I'm doing now inefficient or am I not valuing myself enough? (I know I've had issues with that in the past.)

I can't wait to hear from you all! Let me know what you think!

I won't lie to you I'm only here because i saw your mha plot bunnies, and i love those to death. Then i saw a god damn Izutoga + overpowered/confident Izuki Fanfic and that ticks literally all my boxes. And from there i wanted chapters early so here i am. I say all that for context; i don't read 90% of what you upload (recently) and not because i don't like your writing but because im not a huge danmachi fan and I've yet to dip my toes in other fan fics out side of mha. And thats why i came here, it was only later i noticed you're not and MHA writer so im still adjusting. If "plot bunnies" and "synthesis" and "the sun hero" were the norm I'd pay even 30/month (conversion rates 30 for me would be 15 for you) don't even get me started on forevermore LOVED that shit All in all I'm not sure if I'm the kind of patron this kind of post is meant for. Evident by the fact that im only now seeing it

MadnessIncarnate

Dude, you're not doing anything wrong. Don't let yourself get caught up comparing yourself to another. It's a slippery slope that leads you too afraid to make your own work. You're doing fine, just focus on quality over quantity, and you should be fine.

sebastian contreras acuña

Personally I do not think you are doing something wrong and although I am not one of those who contribute the most ($ 5 mendual) I think it would be only in you the change in memberships

Shura

Honestly, maybe run a poll to see how many people would be opposed to making the 1$ tier into 2 or 3 dollar? Gotta start somewhere when it comes to changes, yeah?

The_Dude_Abides94

Honestly you're doing just fine the way you are right now. While it's true in some stories fan art pics of characters(oc's or canon characters) are a nice touch but I don't think they are truly necessary. The stories themselves are phenomenal and they are just as good as other fanfiction writers I've read. I say just keep doing what you're doing, I hope my input has been helpful and know that whatever you decide you got my full support! 👍

TigerSwarm9122

Your a good writer and do not need to change the way you do things.

Chris Shaw

Honestly, with the quality of your stories you can definitely raise your prices by $2 or $3. Another thing that those creators do is offer polls to choose a direction for stories for higher tier subscribers.

Kairomaru

Thank you for your support! I'm already enjoying this little string of comments very much. It's always nice to hear from you guys!

Space Cowboy

I would at least remove some of the restrictions on the 10 and 20$ tier. You’ll probably get some people changing their donation if you do that. Other than that? I think that you’re doing great.

Kairomaru

Maybe if I unlimited the upper Tiers (except for Secretary of Defense) that would help a little? It wouldn't hurt to have more voters on those Polls either.

Kairomaru

I always like hearing from my Patrons! Thank you for your time and the words that you've shared!

Bertram K Reese

Your not doing anything wrong it just takes awhile for people to discover new writers. Just keep doing what you are doing.

Kairomaru

Hmm, I see, that could be something to do. I'll take in what the others have to say and see what everyone thinks.

Mr Cyberpunk

You 100% can raise your minimum tier up a dollar or two with how high quality your stories are. And some of the authors that I am a patron to release stories earlier to the higher tier supporters (usually like a week or two)

Kairomaru

Maybe that should be what I do? If I unlimited the Captain, General, and Legendary General Tiers, maybe some Patrons would join them?

Kairomaru

Maybe I could. I've heard that the Early Release feature can be difficult because it's limited in its functionality, but if I could make that work it could potentially work.

Daniel J Miller

Almost certainly it’s not like it will create too much work for you either like if you unlocked secretary of defense

Guamson Cruz

Honestly I think it's cause you focus on so few stories at a time and while all of them are amazing your name isn't gonna be as widespread although with your quality it's really a wonder why your not getting as many supporters... Also I've noticed that with other writers they tend to write more... Lewd fanfics... *Shrugs* sex sells more readily then high quality fantasy sadly and I want to say the monthly updates are a bit of a stretch for the price but the quality more then makes up for it

Woods

I wouldn't dive too deep into comparisons. There are a variety of factors that can influence membership totals. I like your content and think you do well. That said, it's good to look for ways to improve, especially if this is your livelihood. I work in business marketing & analytics if you need some help feel free to DM me. I'd be happy to give some advice on organic growth.

Space Cowboy

Yeah, let’s not unlock Secretary of Defense. That way lies madness lol. If you unlock the rest though, there should be at least some jumping for it.

AshField

It is entirely up to you, some use patron as a career and give their best so they have a higher price as a result while for others it's a hobby that generates a good side profit. Don't compare yourself to others, your stories are amazing. I for instance I wanted to subscribe to other paetron accounts but anything above £3 was to much as I had to think smart with how much money I could spend for a monthly service. Making your £1 a great option

Eric

I will be honest about this and I hope you take my complaint with a grain of salt as a single individual as I am sure my opinion isn’t shared by most. My only complain about your writing is that you have a lot of stories going on at the same time which leads to very little consistency on when individual stories will be updates (I understand higher tier groups have some control on what stories get updated). In my case I like 2 stories that you write but seeing as it can go months without those stories being updated means that I likely wouldn’t support paying more. There are other writers I support on a much higher dollar amount because they do about the same amount of writing but it is all focused on the same story or two that I enjoy so it just leads to a lot more chapters and stories moving along faster

Kairomaru

Yeah...I seemed to have more success with my actual fics than I did with an Erotic Fic that I posted. So, I stuck with what I was better at. I'll continue to strive for the best quality that I can produce for all of you!

Kairomaru

Thank you very much! Since I don't use Social Media, I know I'm technically closing off an avenue of self-advertisement, but I've never cared for the Social Media stuff. I've been shocked at how well we've grown here just from posting on FFNet and AO3.

dan dutton

Honestly you are doing great! You make a few stories at a time but we can all see the time and effort you put into each and every one!

Woods

While social media helps, there are other things you can focus on not related to advertising. Things like posting at certain times when traffic is highest, ensuring you have popular keyword tags on your stories, etc.

Boss Redd

Everyone's got their own situation in regards to how much they pay if you would have put a minimum on yours while I imagine various readers would no longer be able to pay I read a little bit of Eric's comment above and I kind of agree you got a thousand and one stories and it seems like you update them randomly I'm not really complaining though these are good stories you're putting out

King Rob

Your doing fine in my experience which is also a affordable one that doesn't destroy my wallet while also providing good content

The_Slave_Knight

I personally love how you have it set up, but if you wanted to make more, I've noticed that your highest tier has a limit on how many people can be in that tier. If you were to remove the limit I'm sure there would be more people subscribing to the Higher Limits. I don't really know though. Sorry.

Stecor

I have to agree with Ashfield and Eric I'm a single man who can only spend so much money on a subscription so I love your 1$ option however the fact you have soooooooo many stories that you wring at the same time the wait between updates is slightly depressing for certain stories such as the sunlight hero story I read all but 2 of your stories and love them all then there are your one shots that I would love to see become full on stories but like ash said it's up to you and I personally believe you are a amazing writer

Kairomaru

I know...I know...too many stories, too many irons in the fire. My Muse likes to flit about from one to another like an overactive honeybee in a field of flowers. Can I ask which two stories brought you here? I hope they're being updated at least semi-regularly.

Kairomaru

Thank you for the compliment! I wanted my Patreon to be accessible to all, that was part of the reason I made a $1/month Tier my lowest. I'm glad that it's helping people that want to support, but don't have much extra income to spend on hobbies.

Eric

Arch mage is my favorite, I came here initially for artificer but have lost some interest at this point and tend to wait until i am multiple chapters behind to catch up. I have tried a few others but have less background about some of the manga so can’t really get into them.

Kairomaru

Thank you for the compliment. Yeah...I know that I have too many stories going on and some lag behind in updates because of it. Damn honeybee Muse...

Kairomaru

Maybe I should just unlimit all but the Secretary of Defense Tier? That seems to be a consensus among the few that I've brought it up.

FireHawk

Same for me, I subscribed because of 1-3 stories which I liked enough to pay for advanced chapters. From my experience those who write their own stories on sites like RoyalRoad make on average more money on patreon, especially those where higher tiers give up to 50 chapter in advance. I personally think a bigger buffer on advanced chapters and more focus on fewer stories at a time could help but that is just my opinion.

Kairomaru

Glad that you're enjoying the stories! I never wanted to break anyone's bank. Just provide them with something to read for their enjoyment.

Kairomaru

Yeah...damn honeybee Muse just flits around from story to story... I tried doing a schedule before in the early days...but that killed my motivation more than anything. There were just times that I had no Muse for a certain story, even when its scheduled time came around.

Kairomaru

Good thing that Arch Mage just joined the Main Rotation then, huh? lol Plus, if I can finish, I'll be posting the next update today/tonight!

Kairomaru

Thank you very much! I know I have too many ongoing stories...but I do strive for the best quality that I can put out.

AshField

You could try getting a TV tropes page for you fanfics, as a form of promotion, lots of people use ot to find good fanfics of certain fandoms. Just a idea

Brody Meech

Your doing great in my opinion just continue with the quality of your work and you'll be ok!

Ymere

I absolutely love your stories. I don't think you are doing anything wrong or necessarily that others are doing anything more right. I think it all comes down to exposure. In fact though you are the only author I have given anything to even if I am one of those folks who is only at the dollar tier. I would compare yourself to others too much I think that is always the path to unhappiness. Mostly you probably just need more exposure. The rest will come in time

Kairomaru

Five of my stories DO have TvTropes pages! Artificer, Collector, Logia, Magma Dragon, and Familia Myth! None of the others that have been publicly posted have one yet...but some of them are only a few chapters long, so that's understandable. If there are any Tropers here, feel free to look at the pages that already exist! Or if you're the type that makes Tropes pages...well...if one of my fics that you like doesn't have one yet. lol

Kairomaru

Thank you for that! You've been with me forever, Brody, I really appreciate it so much!

Kairomaru

I'm happy to hear that. Perhaps I've just seen other's success and felt my own was lacking? Though improving our group is still something I should ask about on occasion. If we always stay the same, it could get stale and boring. No one wants that!

Cirex123

Im not really into most of the stories/fandoms youre writing, so I subscribed just to read all the content for the one I liked. After that, the update rate for a single story isnt fast enough to justify staying subscribed. Of course, for people who enjoy all of the content and fandoms, that would be different.

Cirex123

You could also check how many of the creators who are successful really have a big rotation with loads of stories, versus just a single one. Id guess for the vast majority it‘s the latter.

Ymere

It also seems to me that you have a pretty good group of fans, if the way my inbox is being inundated with people promoting their tier is any indication.

Redpyramid

Hey you could try making a poll to see what people think

Kairomaru

You're one of them now! Hitting me with Triple Combo of support over here! *Sending Internet Hug*

Kairomaru

You guys are already sharing so many thoughts with me though, and it's amazing! I'm working on an update now, but I'll definitely be making a decision soon based on all of this feedback.

Callum Runchman

I've seem others state it as well so I'll just briefly mention it but I think your too divided on your works. I follow a few different patreon creators and most of them only have 2-4 main stories going on at once. You seem to have tones. Whilst your certainly updating them all, because they're so many only a few are regular updates and that causes a lot of confusion at times. I don't want to tell you how to do your job but I'd recommend putting a number of the less popular stories on hiatus so you can focus on 2/3 main ones, complete them and then revive those paused ones. It might initially cause a few people to get upset but you can never please everyone and in the end it will be easier for you. Also with your £1 fee for lowest subscription you've got a lot of followers who but aren't really making tones as not many will upgrade. Even just £3 minimum would see a big jump in your profits and only those who aren't that interested would unsub.

Callum Runchman

Note that this is just my opinion on the situation and that I still love your work and will remain subbed and commenting on each fiction of yours I follow

Kz3838

I think you current system is great, I think that if you increase the limit on the higher tiers people would fill them up. As a single guy your low costing first tier is amazing as I want to show you and your amazing stories some support but I can't really afford to show much more for extended periods of time. Hope this helps, and I look forward to what you put out next!

Kairomaru

That's actually why I stopped putting the new fics out to the public. If I focus on the ones that're already out in the public space, they'll get finished faster than the ones that're currently only for Patrons. I'm hoping to finish a few of them in the next year or so and then move one of the Patron Exclusives into the public sphere.

Michael Turner

I think some people who make more on patreon have storylines slimmed down. Like Danmachi for instance everyone loves that manga/anime. So I’d say look at your stories and see which ones are red hot. Stick to maybe the main 4 because that’s what majority of your readers want. I feel that maybe most of your dollar subs stay there because they only like one or two stories maybe and don’t know when they will be updated so don’t want to pay more for less reading if that makes sense. I paid for an upgrade a while ago to go to 5 bucks a month because I love your Danmachi stories, all of em. Hopefully if you decide to slim it down your dollar subs will see that hey I’m getting more updates on the stories I like so heck yea I’ll pay 5-10 bucks a month to read. I hope this makes sense and this is my opinion only.

Kairomaru

Yeah, I know I have way too many stories going on at once. I'm trying to trim that down a bit going forward.

Chichi son

2 ideas I've seen others use: 1. run a vote on which stories to update in a given month but have the votes that don't win in a given month carry on to the next month ... also have the number of dollars a given subscriber has given for that month could be the number of times their vote counts for .. this would allow every story in the rotation to eventually get some updates while allowing your more popular/bigger money makers to get updated more often 2. Something I think you've seen but didn't quite pay enough attention to notice it for what it is ... when you first post a new chapter lock it to the higher tiers but then over time open it up to the lower tiers.. one of the other author's I'm subscribed to when he first releases a chapter only his $10 subscribers get to see it then a week later his $5 subs get to then another week later his $1 subs get to see it That said money is tight so I'm on the lowest tier for each of those I subscribe to and I've passed up subscribing to a number of authors because their lowest tier was $2 or $3 and I didn't care enough for their main stories to offer them more than $1

Novus

...dude, you're currently the 13th ranked Adult Writer on Patreon. Don't get greedy. https://graphtreon.com/creator/Kairomaru

Thomas E Nellis

Lol you make as much as one of my E-5’s who have served for at least 5 years. Without BHA but if you want to make more up your soldiers to 2 dollars a month and give them their own lottery separate from the officer lottery making both tiers better then up officer price by 1 dollar they get their own chapter chance as well. Net you write 1 more chapter if you can support that. I don’t think you need to lock chapters behind a bigger pay wall. You have such a big following because you write amazing and are affordable for the massses. Just doubling support soldier price to 2 dollars would be enough. Or I could go to 300 dollars and you can write 3 muse chapters muahahah or all of the above

Kairomaru

Huh, I didn't even know I could check things like that. I guess that shows how much I use all of Patreon's services.

Kairomaru

Justy uncapping the upper Tiers has done amazingly already. I didn't know that so many were waiting to upgrade. Honestly, I probably should've done this a while back. I see you trying to get more chapters there, Thomas! Sneaky! lol

Thomas E Nellis

Muahhahahah. You know I love your works here is just another chance for more. Lol

Hannibal St.Michael

I don't think you're doing anything wrong really. I like that you have a lower priced tier because personally I only read 2 of your stories out of all the ones you frequently update. At the moment our tastes in fandoms don't sync up and I also love crossovers which you don't do. This just a couple of reasons why I never went to a higher tier.

Chichi son

IMO the only reason you should cap a Tier is if you're offering a reward for that Tier that has a progressive cost then you cap that Tier to what you believe to be the break even point or slightly lower

Rokatsa

I am a patron to a bunch of different creators here, and I have to say from my own personal experience and opinion, it is truly down to what is offered each and every month beyond the stories. Some of the creators I'm a patron of or used to be a patron of seem to fall into several categories. The ones I'm no longer with pretty much fell off the map with zero notice, or explanation while still also charging something like 20 bucks for one or two story chapters in a month, it became untenable for me, and likely a bunch of other people leading to a likely collapse of that creator, while the more successful ones I'm a patron of seem to have the same 1 dollar model you use, but also update much more frequently by using smaller chapter sizes/daily chapters whichever is easier for them to do. Some of them even do chapters for what seems to me to equal only like 3 or 4 different "scenes" or events in the story. At the end of the day, I find the ones who are in the 1 - 5 dollar range to be the better creators because of that low cost. I personally value them far more than the ones who charge 10 or 20 dollars a month for the same amount of work, because from reading those stories, a good bit of them don't have half the quality you put in here, but I'd never be able to afford a higher price for a long time. My only true suggestions are either update more often with polled chapters, or open up commissions for the stories in general. If a person wants more chapters for a specific story, have it be commissioned beyond your normal releases if you can handle that extra workload. Don't ever give deadlines beyond what you have already proven as I've seen and felt the burnout that comes from that kind of pace. I think that's all I got.

John McCormick

You are a phenomenal writer that others should learn from you. You are doing nothing wrong. I came here initially for “Artificer” and found so much more. I like the idea of staggering chapter releases based on tier. I like the changes you have started but I hope you add “A friend In Need” to your main rotation because it really became one of my new favs. Love your work and don’t get down unless it’s to party 🎉 !

Kairomaru

What's 'A Friend in Need'? I don't have a story or a Bunny by that name... Thank you for the compliments though! I greatly appreciate them!

John McCormick

In my defense I was writing this thought while indulging in a glass of red wine. I might have had too much and thus could not order my thoughts properly.
