Chapter 10 – Securing Trost and Allies

“Shit!” A Garrison soldier cursed as Titans closed in around him. He was out of gas and stuck on a rooftop. Four Titans were coming from different directions and he had nowhere to go. One of the Titans reached the edge of the roof and moved to grab him. Just as the soldier raised his swords, prepared to fight them off as long as he could in hopes of rescue, he heard a roar.

“RAAAARRRHHH!!!” A strange-looking Titan rushed past the reaching Titan and tore out its nape with long, sharp claws.

The dead Titan fell to the ground in a crumpled heap. The three other Titans looked at the five-meter class Titan oddly before moving towards it. The quadrupedal Titan with blonde hair leapt onto the roof of a nearby building, leapt off, and then slashed the nape of a ten-meter class Titan. Before the Titan could fall, the masked Titan kicked off its body and used its vicious fangs to tear out the nape of a twelve-meter Titan.

“RAAAHHH!!!” A fifteen-meter class slammed its fist into the face of the only fourteen-meter Titan. The slightly shorter Titan’s feet left the ground entirely as it flew through the air for a moment. It shook the ground when it landed and before it could even try to get up, the fifteen-meter Titan stomped its head and nape into red paste.

With the four Titans dead, the two odd Titans continued on their path towards the large group of Titans that were still pushing into Trost. The soldier on the roof could only stare in abject shock and confusion as the two Titans moved away. What else could he do in the face of such an anomaly? There had never been any records of a Titan killing another Titan.

“What the fuck?” The Garrison soldier muttered out as he stood on the roof alone.

-West of the Trost Breach-

“We’re losing ground!” Mina cried out, seeing Samuel and Thomas have to abort an attack on a thirteen-meter class when a fifteen-meter Titan swiped at them from the side.

“Why are there so damn many?!” Thomas questioned loudly as the three of them backed off a bit.

“We’ve killed over a dozen of them and there’s still too many.” Samuel was breathing heavily from their close call.

“Fall back, check your gas!” One of the senior Garrison Soldiers called out. Already multiple soldiers had died when they’re compressed gas had run out, leaving them as sitting ducks for the Titans.

“We’ve got six more, incoming!” A female soldier warned, adding to their problems of the two Titans that were already pushing them back.

“Can we catch a fucking break?!” A different soldier demanded angrily. He only had two spare blades left, and there were still more Titans coming.

FWOOM

The fifteen-meter Titan went flying backwards and crashed into the ground loudly, throwing up dirt and rubble. When the soldiers could see through the dust, they were shocked to find what looked like a massive white arrow impaling the Titan’s neck and piercing through the nape.

“What the fuck is that?!” The senior soldier demanded. The fifteen-meter began to steam as it started to break down.

“Is that a ballista bolt?”

“Can’t be, it’s too big!”

“Then what the fuck is it?”

“FOCUS!!!” The senior soldier barked loudly. “We still have seven Titans incoming!”

FWOOM

The thirteen-meter Titan died the same way as the fifteen-meter had, a white arrow sticking through its neck and out the back of its nape. The dead Titan crashing into the ground once more shook the area.

“Is this some new anti-titan weapon?!” Mina wondered loudly, looking around but not seeing anything like a ballista on top of the nearby walls.

“Whatever it is, it’s bought us a little time. Everyone! Check your gas! If you’re running low, retreat to the outpost for a resupply and then return to middle guard! We’re holding the line!” The senior soldier ordered loudly and clearly.

FWOOM

One of the six approaching Titans, a nine-meter class, suddenly had one of the white arrows through its head. The damage made the Titan spasm for a split second before it collapsed. Its limbs jerked, especially its arms, as it tried to function with a chunk of its brain missing.

-Sasha and Krista-

“Another…down…” Sasha’s Warhammer Titan spoke, creating another arrow with her advanced Hardening ability before nocking it on the bowstring of the bow she’d created in the same way.

“Good…job…Sasha…” Krista’s Titan praised her friend while watching her back.

They were watching over the house they’d stashed the unconscious Reiner in. With Sasha’s Warhammer abilities and her skill with a bow, she could stay here and still assist with eliminating Titans. Krista was watching her back, and would prevent Reiner from transforming with her Founding abilities if he somehow woke up. That had let Annie and Ymir join the fight against the massive horde of Titans.

“Your…range…is…impressive…” Krista commented, her Titan smiling at Sasha’s.

“It’s…nothing…compared…to…the…forest…” Sasha let her arrow fly across almost the entirety of Trost to strike another Titan down. “That’s…four…”

-Ymir and Annie-

“GRAAHHH!!!” Ymir was leaping from building to building, swinging across any towers in the area, and shredding her way through every Titan in her path. Napes were slashed and bitten. Eyes gouged out to blind the Pure Titans. Legs cut off to cripple them. Whatever the Prime Jaw Titan could do to lower the numbers and make Annie’s job easier.

The Prime Female Titan was easily cleaning up any crippled or blinded Titan that Ymir left behind. A hardened fist to the nape of a blind Titan saw it drop dead. A Pure Titan hobbling against a building with one leg missing below the knee was decapitated by a hardened kick, its nape destroyed instantly. Using hardening on her fingers, she made them into claws and viciously tore out the nape of a Titan that Ymir hadn’t been able to attack.

“That’s…twelve…already…” Annie’s Titan mumbled as the two paused for a moment to scout the area. She noticed a few soldiers a fair distance away that had watched them slaughter the Pure Titans. They were too far to see the expressions on their faces, but Annie was certain it would be shock. ‘That’s probably a good thing.’ She thought to herself, knowing that seeing Titans that killed other Titans would be a first for the soldiers, and it may get them some allies for how many lives they were saving.

“Haaaahhhh…” Ymir exhaled loud enough to get Annie’s attention. The Prime Jaw Titan pointed forward at three incoming fourteen-meter class Titans.

“Back…to…work…” Annie spoke through her Titan before she and Ymir rushed the trio of Pure Titans. The one in the lead didn’t even have time to react before Annie’s hardened shin obliterated its head and neck in a devastating kick that sent a gale of wind outwards from the arc.

-Near the Breach-

“Am I hallucinating?” Garrison soldier Mitabi questioned as he watched Titans killing Titans. Not in a wild frenzy of flailing blows, but in what appeared to be proper close-quarter-combat. The fifteen-meter class with the long brown hair and odd jaw structure was clearly using strikes and kicks to great affect against the Titan horde.

“Not unless we’re all hallucinating.” One of his team members answered while staring at the sight of the masked Titan with claws tearing out the nape of a twelve-meter class Titan with its fangs.

“The number of Titans is dropping rapidly, sir.” Another member of Mitabi’s team reported, scouting the area and seeing that the dozens and dozens of Titans that had been inside Trost were now at a much smaller number. “Orders?”

“Eliminate the remaining Titans, but stay away from the ones that’re killing their own kind!” Mitabi ordered after a second to think. If Titans were going to start killing each other, he’d take the boon and use it as an opportunity. “If you see anyone injured or stranded, help them get back to the supply depot.”

“Yes, sir!” His subordinates called back as they launched their wires and took off in bursts of compressed gas.

-Outside the Wal ~ Survey Corps-

“Hmngh!” Levi sliced through the nape of the last fifteen-meter Titan among the horde. “This should be finished soon.” He quickly counted the remaining Titans outside the wall and the ones that were crowding around the breach before he landed easily on a nearby rooftop.

“Captain Levi!” A soldier dropped beside him in a hurry. “Commander Erwin has been severely injured!”

“What?!” Levi was in the soldier’s face in an instant. “What happened?”

“An Abnormal, sir!” The soldier nearly pissed himself at the look on Levi’s face. “It burst through the building they were standing on, killed a few and injured the rest.”

“Where is Erwin?” Levi questioned, wanting to head for the Commander’s side.

“Follow me, sir! I was ordered to bring you!” The soldier launched his wires and took off quickly. Levi followed, nearly overtaking the man on multiple occasions.

When they found the rooftop that Erwin was being given first aid on, Levi was somewhat relieved to see his friend and superior officer still conscious at least. He landed and made his way over quickly. Seeing his own squad there, he briefly scanned the area, counted the remaining Titans, and then decided on their orders.

“Levi Squad.” Levi spoke in his normal no nonsense manner.

“Sir!” Petra, Eld, Oluo, and Gunther snapped to attention.

“Eliminate the rest of the Titans immediately.” Levi ordered simply. “We’ll be moving Erwin into Trost as soon as possible for treatment. Go.”

“Yes, sir!” Squad Levi blasted off in clouds of compressed gas to carry out Levi’s orders.

“Levi.” Erwin acknowledged his friend and subordinate.

“You’re still alive.” Levi commented as he stood next to Erwin. “Are you going to make it.” They’d both seen far too much death to bother being tactful about it.

“Possibly.” Erwin grimaced, the bandages around his side already soaked in blood. The man’s face an unhealthy pale from the loss of blood. His breathing was also coming in weak rasps.

“Commander, please don’t talk.” A soldier urged Erwin, trying to get him to lay down at the very least.

“The Titans should be cleared soon.” Hange spoke up, noticing how fast the remaining giants were falling. “You just need to hold on, sir.”

“How could the Colossal Titan have snuck up on us like this?” Erwin pondered, staring at the breach in the Trost wall.

“We’ll worry about that after you’re in a hospital.” Levi waved off the question.

“I suppose…” Erwin was guided into a sitting position by the soldier at his side with medical training. “But we have watchers at every gate just for the Colossal Titan.” His breaths were shorter and raspier now. “They couldn’t have missed its approach…”

“Titans have been eliminated!” A call came from a female soldier as she saw a green smoke flare launched into the air.

“Prepare to move Erwin into Trost!” Hange ordered as Erwin was forced to lay on a stretcher.

“We’ll be heading for the supply depot nearest the gate! It should have medical facilities and personnel ready to receive injured!” Levi raised his voice and every soldier in the vicinity immediately double-timed it.

“Sir, yes, sir!” They all snapped off crisply as Erwin’s stretcher was gently picked up and lowered from the roof as carefully as possible.

-Trost ~ Supply Depot-

“You all saw that too, right?” Daz, a member of the 104th Cadet Corp exclaimed as he refilled his gas canisters.

“No, Daz, we all went blind! Yes, we saw it!” Connie snapped back at the man.

“Titans killing Titans…I didn’t think that happened.” Jean shook his head, trying to make sense of what he’d seen that day.

“It doesn’t, at least no one has ever seen it before.” Marco mentioned from beside him as they restocked their blades.

“But Titans can’t use weapons…so what was shooting those massive arrows?” Mina questioned the ones that had seen what she’d saw out there.

“No idea…never seen anything like it before.” Ian, a senior soldier and Team Leader shook his head. “There aren’t any new anti-Titan weapons that I’ve heard of.”

“It was the weird one with the bow!” Nack Tierce, another member of the 104th spoke up, getting the group’s attention. “When we were on our way back to resupply here, we saw two Titans standing around. One was a blonde female-looking one, and the other was covered in this weird white body cloth or something? Never even heard of anything like it…but it had a Titan-sized bow with it. I only saw one arrow in its hand though.”

“A Titan using weapons? That’s impossible though…right?” A cadet named Sandra spoke up, shaking her head at the ludicrous idea.

“We thought Titans killing each other was impossible before today too.” Samuel shrugged, just glad to have made it out alive so far.

“They were tearing through the other Titans from what I saw on our way here.” Thomas finished filling up his canisters. “With any luck, when we get back out there, only the Titan-killing Titans will be left.”

“Then what do we do?” Connie asked the question that was suddenly on everyone’s mind.

“We follow orders, that’s what.” Ian spoke up as his position dictated. “Even if they kill Titans, they’re still Titans themselves. Don’t forget that.”

-Trost Breach-

“Still a few left.” Levi saw two fifteen-meter classes, a fourteen-meter class, a thirteen-meter class, and two five-meter class Titans as the Survey Corps moved through the breach and into Trost. “That’s a weird one though.” He eyed the female-figured one with the all-white body and brown hair. “So, are those two.” His eyes quickly targeted to the two masked five-meter class Titans.

“What kind of Titan is that?!” Hange shouted as her eyes fell on Sasha’s Titan. “I’ve never seen or heard of such a Titan!” Her curiosity quickly gave way to a building excitement. The loud shout drawing the attention of all of the Titans.

“Shut up.” Levi stated, his blades at the ready. “Erwin’s barely holding on, we don’t have time for your stupidity.”

None of the Survey Corps was expecting what happened next. All six of the Titans snapped off a perfect salute. Their fists over their hearts as they stood at attention. Even the two five-meter Titans that were clearly more comfortable in a quadrupedal stance had forced themselves to their feet to salute properly.

“AAAHHH!!!” Hange squealed loudly at seeing Titans saluting. “AM I DREAMING?!”

“What the hell…?” Levi’s eyes widened at the impossible sight.

“Captain…Levi…” The fourteen-meter female Titan spoke slowly, once more making Hange cry out in shock and delight.

“How do you know me?” Levi glared up at the Titan. He’d never heard a Titan talk, but at this point he just wanted some god damned answers!

“We…are…soldiers…” Annie’s Titan informed the Survey Corps Captain. Any further words were cut off when the medic called out in alarm.

“Captain Levi! Commander Erwin! His heartbeat is slowing down!” The medic loudly informed, trying to keep Erwin alive even without any proper tools. “Shit, shit, shit! Commander, stay with us!”

“Erwin!” Levi was at his friend’s side instantly. “Begin chest compressions if he stops breathing!” He looked at the Survey Corps as a whole. “Ignore the Titans! We’re making for the Supply Depot on the double!”

“Yes, sir!” The entire Corps saluted and made to move forward.

“Commander…Erwin…?” Annie knelt down in her Titan form, prompting the rest of them to do so as well. “Injured?”

“Move out of the way or get us to the Supply Depot faster!” Levi ordered, the blade in his right hand pointed at the Titans.

“Save…him…” Krista spoke through her Titan. “We…can…save…him…”

“What?!” Levi glared at the thirteen-meter class. “I don’t what you’re talking about, but we don’t have time, move!”

“Levi.” Hange grabbed his arm. “They said they can save him.”

“So what?” Levi shot her a look. “You expect me to believe Titans?”

“We’ve never encountered this before.” Hange reminded him of the obvious. “If they say they can save Erwin, shouldn’t we try?!”

“Don’t get your obsession mixed up with reality, Hange!” Levi’s voice raised uncharacteristically, a clear sign that the situation was actually getting to him.

“Commander!” The medic hollered out. “Start chest compressions! Come on, Commander, breathe!” Two other soldiers had set the stretcher down and were now doing everything they could to assist the medic.

Steam erupted out of the necks of the male fifteen-meter class, and the female thirteen-meter class. From the steam, two people shot down to ground level with ODM Gear, much to the surprise of the members of the Survey Corps that were still watching. Eren and Krista approached Levi and Hange carefully, hands in the air, not touching their ODM Gear controls, and showing that they had no other weapons. Hange looked between them like she’d just seen God, but Levi glared at them warningly.

“We can save him.” Krista said it again. Her delicate features making her look even less like a threat to the soldiers.

“If we awaken him, then he’ll regenerate.” Eren spoke next, looking into Levi’s eyes and not backing down.

“Awaken him?” Levi questioned, not taking his eyes off either of them.

“I have a syringe in my pocket, if you inject Commander Erwin with it, he’ll become a Titan. He won’t become a monster like the others. He’ll be like us, able to transform.” Krista explained carefully. “He will live.”

“You’re not making any damn sense.” Levi was frustrated, his mind at war with itself. One side wanting to believe that they could save Erwin. The other demanding him to accept reality and that this was all a dangerous unknown.

“Levi, we have to make a choice.” Hange looked her fellow officer in the eyes. “Do we take a chance to save Erwin, or do we fight these six and try to take them into custody to learn about their Titan powers?” She was firm, her voice lacking any of its usual jovialness.

“Come on, Commander…breathe.” The medic’s frantic voice could be heard as Erwin slowly slipped away.

“Do it.” Levi could barely believe the words coming out of his mouth. “Soldiers! Clear the area and form a perimeter!” He ordered with every scrap of authority he could muster.

“Yes, sir!” The Survey Corps fell back on their training to deal with this series of impossible situations. The sounds of ODM Gear being used was heard and in seconds a ring had been formed around the area.

“If this doesn’t work, I’m killing all of you.” Levi’s threat was colder than ice as he nearly drove Eren and Krista towards the near-dead Erwin at sword point. Hange following and her brown eyes filled with what had to be hundreds of questions.

“Captain Levi?” The medic looked up at his superior officer.

“Move.” Eren put his body between Krista and the medic, blocking the man from stopping Krista.

“One second…” Krista pulled the case from her pocket and opened it. The prepared syringe sitting inside innocuously. The blonde took it and carefully inserted the needle into Erwin’s pale arm. She depressed the plunger and the serum flooded into Erwin’s veins. Pulling it out, she threw it against some nearby rubble to destroy it. “We have to go!”

Eren grabbed the medic, hauling the squawking man to his feet as they rushed away. Krista was right behind him, and even with her curiosity, Hange grabbed Levi’s arm and nearly dragged him away from Erwin as small sparks of yellow lighting began to form on Erwin’s body.

BOOM

“What the fuck?!” Levi roared as he saw what looked like lightning strike Erwin’s prone body and explode.

A massive skeleton began to form, easily reaching sixteen meters in height. Ligaments and tendons along with muscle wrapped around the bones next. Skin covered the red muscles and a head of short blonde hair grew from the top of the new Titan’s head. Clouds of steam billowed from the new body as it collapsed to its knees.

Inside of her Titan, Annie guessed that Erwin might be an Attack Type naturally, but that would soon change. She shot a glance at Sasha’s Titan form before pointedly looking at her closed hand. Sasha gave her a slight nod, knowing what Annie had planned. As soon as Erwin’s Titan began to mindlessly move, they’d feed Reiner to the Commander of the Survey Corps, dealing with the Marely soldier and hopefully getting a powerful ally on their side.

“ERWIN TURNED INTO A TITAN!!!” Hange hollered in shock and wonder. She was beyond astounded! This was throwing EVERYTHING that they’d ever learned about Titans out the window! The ever curious researcher in her wanted to know everything about this, and everything there was to know about the Titans.

“Uuuuaaahhh…” Erwin’s mindless form slowly opened its eyes. They were unfocused, as if the Titan had just awoken from a long sleep.

“Is Erwin still there?” Levi demanded of Eren and Krista, the tip of his sword actually poking into Eren’s back. A simple thrust would have it going through the man, his heart, and out his chest before Eren could do anything.

Sasha passed the unconscious Reiner to Annie. The Prime Female Titan grabbed him and shot to her feet quickly. Her natural athleticism combined with the Female Type’s natural stamina and all-rounder nature meant she was in front of Erwin’s Titan before anyone could react. Annie grabbed the short hair atop the Titan’s head and yanked its head back. The jaw opened as the Titan reacted to the stimuli and tried to roar. That was the exact opening Annie needed to shove Reiner into the Titan’s mouth. Erwin’s Titan bit down on Reiner, a splattering of blood escaping his teeth, before swallowing what was in his mouth.

Annie retreated multiple steps before kneeling in submission. To all the soldiers, it looked as if she was kneeling to Captain Levi and Hange as the superior officers. But in reality, Annie was kneeling before her King after having completed the task set for them to eliminate Bertholdt and Reiner.

“You have one second to tell me what she just did!” Levi stabbed into Eren’s back, blood running down his sword.

“She gave him the Prime Armored Titan.” Eren answered, unbothered by the sword tip stabbed into his back.

“The Armored Titan?!” Hange exclaimed with her eyes wide. She’d never gotten to see it before. But she’d seen the results of what it had done in Shiganshina and to Wall Maria.”

“It’ll only take a moment or two to take effect.” Krista promised, her soft tone barely doing anything for the tense situation.

Indeed, only a few moments after swallowing Reiner, the new Titan went still. Erwin’s Titan collapsed to the ground face first with a crash. Only a few seconds later and steam erupted from the Titan’s nape. Levi, Hange, and most of the Survey Corps watched on in absolute silence as Erwin emerged from the body of the Titan. Their Commander appeared asleep, but his body was no longer pale from blood loss, and there was no sign of the massive injury that he’d sustained not even half an hour earlier.

“Erwin…” Levi pulled his blade out of Eren’s back, flicked the blood off of it almost automatically, then sheathed it in a fluid motion as he rushed over towards his friend. “Hot…” Levi grimaced as he walked through the stinging steam and looped his arms under Erwin’s armpits. With a strong heave, he pulled Erwin free of the hot, disintegrating Titan flesh. Without a word he carried Erwin over to Hange, Eren, and Krista.

“He’s alive…” Hange checked over Erwin. His breathing was good, his pulse was steady, he had no traces of injury at all. “How is this possible?” She looked over at Krista and Eren for answers.

“We need to fill the breach, and then will answer all of your questions.” Eren reminded them of the massive hole in the wall of Trost. “Annie, Sasha, can you take care of that?”

“Yes…” Annie’s Titan nodded.

“Got…it…” Sasha bowed her head too, seeing how serious and tense the current situation was.

The two Titans stood up and moved over to the breach. Sasha on the right and Annie on the left. From Sasha’s body the Hardening power flowed, spilling out the bone white material like water before it formed into a wall and instantly hardened into something approaching granite. Annie’s skin looked to crystallize before the same effect spread to the side of the wall that she was touching. The two outpourings met in the middle and mixed together to form a thick and solid wall. Sasha and Annie weren’t done though, both moving backwards through the breach, filling in the massive hole with the material until what once was a gate, was now a solid wall.

“Well…the wall is secure now.” Hange uttered out, having seen something new again and adding another dozen or so questions to her mind.

Steam erupted from the napes of the remaining Titans. Ymir, Armin, Sasha, and Annie emerging before slowly walking over to Eren and Krista. Nothing that could be construed as hostile was done. All of their hands were held up to assure Levi and Hange that they meant no harm and weren’t a threat.

“Captain Levi, Squad Leader Hange, we’d like to talk.” Eren spoke for the group of Shifters.

“This is going to be a fucking headache.” Levi could already tell this whole incident was about to turn into a shitshow as soon as the higher ups learned about it.

Hange on the other hand, now being given leave to sate her curiosity, quickly grabbed onto Eren’s shoulders with a bright smile. “Make me a Titan!”

“Huh?” Eren blinked at the woman in shock.

“Make me a Titan too!” Hange repeated, beginning to shake Eren slightly. “How do you do it? You used a syringe for Erwin. Do you have any more? What’s it like? How much do you know about the Titans?”

“I can’t answer if you’re shaking me.” Eren, grabbed the woman’s wrists gently to make her stop. “It’s a serum that we make.”

“What’s it made of? Can you make more of it? Is it something natural, or is it artificially produced?” Hange’s questions wouldn’t stop. “Do you need a wife? I’ll marry you if you make me a Titan!” The sparkles in her eyes were bright.

“Maybe we should save the questions for a private meeting?” Ymir suggested, looking at Hange with wide eyes.

“That would probably be for the best.” Armin agreed with a nod.

“Let’s just get to the Supply Depot…preferably before Hange starts offering other things.” Levi motioned for the rest of the Survey Corps to approach so that they could make their way towards their destination.

“Other things?” Hange looked at Levi curiously for a second before it seemed she caught his meaning. “Oh! Do you want sex?” She looked at Eren with a bright grin. “We can do that!”

“What?!” Eren balked at the sudden offer. He swore he could feel the glares that Krista, Ymir, and Annie were shooting at Hange.

“Oh! Is that a way to turn me into a Titan too?!” Hange was already trying to shrug off her jacket. “I’m good with whatever you prefer! Any hole is fine!”

“Grkh!” This time Eren did choke on his own breath.

“No!” Annie, Krista, and Ymir denied Hange. Stepping between Eren and the clearly crazy woman.

“Will you hurry up, Hange?!” Levi barked, making all of the approaching soldiers flinch at his tone.

“Ah, right! Save that for later.” Hange put her jacket back on properly. “Let’s chat on the way!” She beamed at Eren around the other women. “What’s your name?”

“The fact that she’s only now asking that after offering sex for information is slightly concerning.” Armin muttered low enough that only Eren heard him.

“I think she’s one of those people that gets crazy over their interests.” Eren whispered back.

Armin’s deadpan look at his friend nearly screamed: “You think?!”

The blonde only shook his head and imagined how Mikasa would react when she heard what Hange had offered Eren.
