Chapter 49 – Angel Beach and Dials

As the Straw Hats found out, ‘Heaven’s Gate’ was far more ornate on the outside than the inside. The inside was rather plain, in fact. Just an arched roof held up by rows of support columns. Between each of the columns, set back into the walls, were doors that looked to be made of wood. As the Going Merry entered the gate, one of the doors opened.

“Hey! Somebody’s coming out!” Usopp pointed at the short person that stopped at the edge of the platform.

The person in question was a short, very elderly woman with an extensively wrinkled face. She had purple hair that was put up into two buns. The old woman had rather thin arms, and wore a pink tunic. The most notable thing about her, at least to the Straw Hats, were the small white wings on her back.

“Are you tourists?” The old woman’s voice carried over to the pirates. In her hand was what appeared to be a camera, if the clicks that came from it were any indication. But it was much different than the cameras that the blue sea dwellers were used to. The biggest difference being that there was no Cameko Transponder Snail attached to the device. “Or have you come to make war?” The old woman questioned while finishing taking her pictures of the crew. “It doesn’t really matter. If you want to go to the upper stratum, then you have to pay the entrance fee of one billion Extols per person. That’s the law.”

“An angel!” Luffy gaped at the old woman with the wings. “Isn’t that what an angel is supposed to look like?! She’s a pruney little angel!”

“How much is one billion Extols?” Usopp was also gaping, but more so at the perceived price. A billion of any currency was a lot, right?

“We don’t even know the exchange rate, or if they even use Beri up here.” Vivi mentioned quietly, having had to learn about trade and such growing up.

“Um, what if we don’t have any Extols?” Nami asked the old woman nervously. It would be a rather quick end to their trip to the Sky Island if they couldn’t get passed the toll gate.

“Then you may pass.” The old woman shrugged without a care.

“We can?!” Usopp exclaimed in shock.

“They’d just give up on nine billion of these Extol?” Mikita cocked an eyebrow, clearly not believing such a thing.

“Maybe they’re not worth that much?” Zoro didn’t much care. If the old lady said they could pass, then they should just sail onwards.

“But that choice is entirely your own.” The old woman spoke with a look in her eye. “I’m neither a gatekeeper nor a guardian. I’m merely asking what you wish to do.”

“Then we’re passing.” Luffy stated with a smile. “We’re going to the Sky Island!” He waved at the short old lady. “Sorry we don’t have any Extols, but we’re going through, granny!”

“I see. Nine of you, right?” The elderly woman asked the straw-hatted young man.

“Hm? Yeah. But how do we get up higher?” Luffy asked, only seeing the waterfall ahead.

He was answered by two massive claws appearing from the sea clouds and latching on to the broken remains of the wings that had been attached to the Going Merry.

“Aaaahhhh!” Chopper cried out in shock.

“What the hell is that?!” Sanji prepared to attack whatever it was. “Some kind of crustacean?”

“It’s the famous Lobster Express of the White Sea.” The old lady was completely calm.

The massive lobster placed the Going Merry on its back and then flexed it huge tail. The lobster, ship, and the crew were blitzing forward at highspeed a second later. Without any loss of speed, the lobster started swimming up the waterfall of clouds.

“It’s so fast!” Nami exclaimed as the lobster carried them along.

“Are we going up the waterfall?!” Usopp couldn’t believe what he was seeing. The Sky Islands were absolutely nuts!

“Look at that spiral of clouds!” Luffy pointed out what was near the top of the waterfall. “That’s so cool!”

While the Straw Hats were being carried up the spiraling clouds, the old woman at the gate was making a call to her superiors. “Amazon, inspector of Heaven’s Gate, reporting to the Omnipotent God and his Vassals. Nine people have illegally entered Godland Skypiea. Render heavenly judgment.” The now named Amazon smirked as she ended the call without waiting for any words to be spoken.

“The clouds are like a river!” Chopper exclaimed, sparkles in his eyes at the weird phenomenon.

“I can’t believe this is natural.” Nami shook her head while holding onto the railing as they continued to speed up the spiraling cloud.

“No way this is natural!” Mikita agreed since the formation and path was too clearly defined.

“I think I see the exit.” Robin pointed out a light that was higher up the cloud river they were on.

“There’s something written up there too!” Vivi noticed a sign near the same area.

As they rushed passed the sign, Luffy was able to read it. “Godland?! Skypiea?!” He had seen the name Skypiea before on the map that he and Usopp had recovered from the St. Briss!

“That’s the entrance then?” Sanji figured as they rapidly approached the light in the clouds.

As the Going Merry launched into the air on the White-White Sea, the giant lobster that had been carrying them let go and sank below the clouds. The ship landed in the sea clouds and before the eyes of the Straw Hat pirates was an island with many buildings on it. Huge green vines wound around rivers of floating clouds to form pathways that could be sailed on. There were tons of palm tress on the beach directly in front of them as well, along with what looked like a small woodland behind the beach itself.

“An island!” Usopp cheered at finally seeing the real Sky Island.

“It’s Skypiea!” Chopper had a brilliant smile on his face and his excitement was through the roof!

“Sail for the beach!” Luffy pointed towards the island with a massive grin. The Going Merry caught the breeze after its two snapped rigging lines were retied. In short order they were floating calmly in the shallows of Skypiea.

“It’s an island made of fluffy clouds!” Mikita declared as she floated down with the aid of her parasol. “It feels funny. Kyahahaha!” She enjoyed the softness under her bare feet. She’d changed into a midriff-bearing, white t-shirt and a pair of jean shorts for the beach.

“Skypiea!” Luffy, Chopper, and Usopp all exclaimed, jumping from the Merry and landing on the fluffy island clouds.

“Hey! What about the anchor?” Zoro called out to Luffy. “This ocean doesn’t have a bottom.”

“Never mind that! Check this out, Zoro! The beach id fluffy!” Luffy laughed as he played around with Usopp and Chopper.

“Nevermind the anchor?” Zoro deadpanned at his Captain. Dropping anchor was literally required if you docked at any island in the blue sea. “But this scenery really is amazing. It’s like something you’d see in a dream.”

“Look at those guys.” Sanji removed his dress shoes and socks. “They’re so excited. Completely hopeless.” He chuckled while rolling up his pant legs to avoid getting them wet. “Later, mosshead!” Sanji shot a jibe at Zoro just as he leapt over the railing and into the shallow cloud sea.

“You seem pretty excited yourself.” Zoro glared at where the blonde cook had just been.

“This is amazing.” Vivi smiled at Skypiea. She’d changed out of her damp clothes and now wore a light blue tank top and black shorts that stopped at mid-thigh. She had white sandals on her feet and her blue hair up in a ponytail.

“Right?” Nami grinned also having changed her clothes. She was now wearing a bikini top that was designed in a cloud pattern colored in blue, light blue, and white. On her legs she’d chosen a pair of cargo pants that stopped just below her knees. They were held up with a black belt that had a buckle depicting a Beri Symbol. The navigator had chosen to go barefoot, like Mikita.

“So…this is Skypiea.” Robin looked at the island with some interest. Like the other women she’d changed into more appropriate clothing, switching into a golden-yellow sleeveless shirt with purple pants that reached her calves, with a simple belt around her waist. She was also going barefoot, wanting to experience the feeling of the island clouds.

“Yeah. The name even matches the map that Luffy brought back from the St. Briss.” Nami held up the old map with a grin. “That Galleon that fell from the sky really did make it up here two-hundred years ago!” She folded the old map and put it into one of her cargo pants pockets. “Frankly, when I first heard about an island in the sky, I didn’t believe it existed.” She walked towards the railing of the ship and leapt over it. She landed in the shallow cloud sea with ease and threw her arms up in the air. “But look! Here we are! It’s real!” She smiled beautifully, laughing at reaching a place thought to only be a story.

“A place from a dream!” Vivi landed next to Nami with a small splash. The princess let out a melodious laugh as she and Nami walked through the cloud sea and onto the soft beach.

“What about you?” Robin looked over at Zoro, the only one still on the ship.

“I’m going ashore too.” Zoro sat on the railing as he started removing his boots.

“So, sailing the seas and exploring new lands is your idea of adventure?” Robin asked rhetorically, the breeze gently moving her raven-hair around as she watched the rest of the crew on the beach. “I never thought about it that way.”

Zoro only cocked an eyebrow at the wistful look on Robin’s face. The Archaeologist gently slid over the railing and landed in the sea clouds with a small little grin on her lips.

“I love this place!” Luffy declared loudly, his hands clenched into fists. “The smell of adventure is overpowering!”

“Adventure!” Usopp and Chopper declared, throwing their fists into the air.

“Aaah!” Nami stretched her arms above her head. “The Marines could never find us here. So, we can actually relax for once. It’s been so long since I’ve enjoyed the beach.”

“We usually stop at ports.” Luffy nodded from where he was now climbing up one of the palm trees that was growing at a nearly horizontal angle. He did stop in his climb to admire his lovers in their outfits though, which got him a wink from Nami, a smile from Vivi, and a seductive grin from Mikita.

“So, this is a beach.” Chopper rolled around on the fluffy island cloud. Back on Drum Island, it was never warm enough to go swimming, and the shoreline was mostly rocky cliffs too.

“What kind of flowers on these?” Sanji looked curiously at the native plants. “Are the petals like balloons too?” He touched them lightly with a grin.

“What a weird-looking nut.” Luffy had reached the top of his chosen palm tree and found not coconuts, but something that more closely resembled a pumpkin with a dark blue-green coloration. Ever the curious eater, Luffy picked the nearest one and tried to bite into it. “Mmmrrph?!” Luffy pulled back with his jaw aching. “What the hell?” He knocked on the top of the weird nut and heard a dull thud. “Hey, Usopp! I found a nut!” Luffy tossed it down to Usopp who was molding the clouds into an imitation sandcastle.

“Huh?” Usopp looked up just in time to dodge the nut, only for the rock hard thing to smash his small castle. “Luffy! You almost hit me with that thing!” He shook his fist at his Captain.

“Look at this.” Mikita showed Vivi and Nami a pagoda with large clouds in the shape of chairs.

“Even cloud furniture?” Nami sat on one of the chairs.

“There must be some technique for molding them.” Vivi guessed while bouncing slightly on her own chair.

“You think we could take these with us?” Mikita questioned, happily lounging on the third chair with a grin.

“Ladies!” Sanji jogged over to the women with a smile. “Look, flowers!” He presented the strange flowers he found at the edge of the beach to them.

“Careful, Mr. Cook, they may be poisonous.” Robin had a half-smile as she walked up to the pagoda.

A gentle sound suddenly filled the air of the beach. Luffy, Usopp, and Chopper looked up from their inspection of the strange pumpkin-like nuts to see where it was coming from. The ones at the pagoda were the first to determine the person playing on top a nearby hill of the island cloud.

“Suu! Suu!” A white foxlike animal padded up to Zoro and sniffed at the swordsman curiously.

“A fox?” Zoro had never seen one with pure white fur and the slightly elongate muzzle was also different than what he was used to.

“Look! It’s an angel!” Sanji declared of the one playing the music. He had hearts in his eyes at seeing the young woman.

Indeed, the young woman playing the small harp fit the description of an angel. She was a relatively tall, fair-skinned young woman with blonde hair that was styled into two braided pigtails and two antennae that stuck up from the top of her head. On her back were a small pair of white wings. She was wearing a pink dress with red, flower shaped textures that went down to her thighs. On her feet were red and pink striped sandals, that had white soles.

“Heso.” The angel greeted them with a kind smile.

“Huh?” Luffy blinked at the greeting, having never heard it before.

“Did you come from the blue sea?” The woman asked politely. “Suu, come here.” She patted the side of her leg and the odd white fox rushed over to her.

“We flew up in our ship.” Luffy replied still looking at the woman. “Do you live here?”

“Yes, I live here.” She giggled lightly while picking up the white fox and cradling it in her arms. “My name is Conis, and this is Suu.” She gave them a cute smile as she gently scratched behind her pet’s ears. “This is Angel Beach in Skypiea.” She noticed the two pumpkin-like nuts that Luffy was carrying. “Oh, do you like conash?” She questioned the straw-hatted man.

“What’s conash?” Luffy asked before noticing where she was looking. “Oh, I don’t know, we haven’t figured out how to eat them yet.”

“Hehehe…” Conis laughed gently, the sound like tinkling bells. “I’m afraid you don’t eat conash directly. You just drink its juice.” She let Suu down and took one of the conash from Luffy. Conis took out a knife and with a flick of her wrist had the blade out from the handle. “The outer rind and the inner flesh are both almost as hard as rock.” She flipped the conash over in her arm and then jabbed the knife into the center of the bottom. “The only soft spot is here on the bottom.” She cut out a circular section while everyone watched. “Here you are.” She placed a straw into the conash and handed it back to Luffy.

“Hmm…” Luffy took a drink of the juice and his eyes widened at the unexpected flavor. “This is great!”

“Really?! Let me try it!” Usopp looked at the conash eagerly.

“Hey, can you open this one too?” Chopper held up one of his own.

“If you’re in trouble, I’d be happy to help you.” Conis smiled at the newcomers.

“Whoa…you could melt a man’s heart with that look.” Sanji smiled at Conis, only for Nami to move him aside.

“Don’t start drooling on her.” Nami pushed Sanji away. “We have a lot of questions. All of this is very new to us.” The navigator smiled at Conis.

“I’d be happy to answer them.” Conis gave her a bright grin. She turned to see if Chopper wanted her to open his conash, only to see Luffy jab his index finger through the soft spot on the bottom with ease. “I’ve never seen someone open conash that way before.”

“Eh?” Luffy looked at her before shaking his head. “It’s something I saw my grandpa do when I was growing up. He never taught me or my brothers how to do it though. But I’m strong enough to break the soft spot on the bottom.” He shrugged as Chopper sipped some of the conash juice.

“It’s good!” Chopper declared with a bright smile. “It’s sweet and tasty!”

“Aww, come one, let me try some!” Usopp looked at Chopper.

“Is it really that good?” Mikita and Vivi looked at the one in Luffy’s hand.

“Try it.” Luffy offered them the straw with a smile.

“Don’t mind if I do.” Mikita grinned, taking the straw between her lips and sealing an indirect kiss. “Oh, that is nice.” Mikita enjoyed the taste of the fruit juice. “Like citrus, but sweeter.”

“Mmm~” Vivi hummed in delight as she took the straw for a sip of her own. “You’re right, that’s delicious.” She grinned brightly at the conash.

“Nami, want a sip?” Luffy asked with a grin. He held the conash up to her and Nami playfully rolled her eyes before sipping from the straw.

“That’s good.” Nami blinked at the flavor. “Sweet, but not too sweet. Citrusy too, but not like a mikan.” It was hard to describe the exact taste of the conash juice.

“Yep!” Luffy chuckled before taking the straw again to drink more from the fruit.

“Anyway,” Nami grinned and turned back to Conis. “We have some questions, but the most important is how long does it take for the Log Pose to reset here?” The navigator pointed to the Log Pos on her wrist.

“I’m afraid I don’t know.” Conis looked at the Log Pose curiously. “We rarely see many Blue Sea dwellers here in Skypiea.”

“Hey!” Zoro called out, interrupting what everyone was doing. “Something’s coming from the ocean!”

There was indeed something racing towards Angel Beach. It threw up a large spray of ocean cloud behind it as it moved. Luffy’s Observation told him there was a single ‘voice’ from the source, a human one at that. As the person got closer, all of the Straw Hats realized that the small ship had no sail and the man on it wasn’t rowing.

“Ah, that’s my father.” Conis smiled as the man got closer to the shore.

“Conis, heso!” The older man called out.

“Heso, father!” Conis waved to him.

“Is that like ‘hello’ up here or something?” Nami was the one to ask this time.

“What’s that thing he’s riding?” Vivi asked Conis, curious about the small ship.

“It’s pretty cool!” Usopp declared, wondering how it was so fast.

“It’s called a waver.” Conis answered helpfully.

“He’s not stopping…” Sanji noticed that the old man hadn’t slowed down at all.

“Pardon me.” The old man called out. “I’m coming ashore.”

Just as the waver hit the beach, it blasted forward wildly, clearly out of the man’s control. Luffy, who was closest, easily reached out and grabbed the man off of the machine with his right hand, his left still holding his conash that he was sipping from. The waver continued forward until it crashed into a palm tree and fell over.

“Is anyone hurt?” The bearded old man looked around once Luffy lowered him back to the cloud beach. He was fairly average in height, but had a bald head with the only hair left being styled into two antennae like his daughter’s. His brown beard was oddly rounded, hiding his mouth for the most part. He had the same small white wings as Conis too. He wore a long robe in a dark yellow color with a black pattern going up the left side and his feet were covered by simple sandals. On his back was a large basket with straps going over each shoulder.

“You’re the one that crashed, old man.” Zoro pointed out to the newcomer.

“Hey, Usopp, doesn’t that thing look a lot like the thing you salvaged from the St. Briss?” Nami pointed out to the gunman.

“Hey, you’re right! It’s really similar…you think it’s an old waver?” Usopp eyed up the waver that was lying on its side.

“Noland mentioned them in his Log Book. Boats that move without wind or paddle!” Nami exclaimed, seeing what a working waver could do. “I wonder if we can get ours fixed?”

“Pardon me, I should introduce myself.” Conis’s father bowed slightly to the Straw Hats. “My name is Pagaya, it’s a pleasure to meet you.”

“Likewise.” Luffy agreed, drinking up the last of the conash juice and then tossing the rock hard shell into the small woodland with one hand.

“Are these new friends of yours, Conis?” Pagaya asked his daughter.

“Yes, they’re from the blue sea.” Conis replied with a smile.

“I see. Then they must be full of questions about Skypiea.” Pagaya chuckled lightly. “As a resident, I welcome you to the White-White Sea and Angel Beach.” He reached into the basket on his back and pulled out a lobster unlike any that the Straw Hats had ever seen, having a completely white shell. “This does seem rather like fate. You see, I was just out fishing for the finest catch in the White-White Sea, Sky Lobster!” He appeared to be smiling, but only the movement of his eyes gave it away. “Won’t you come to our home and enjoy the bounty of the sky with us?” He offered kindly to the pirates.

“Really?! Sure, we’ll come!” Luffy, ever one to try new food, agreed instantly.

“Skypiean cuisine, huh?” Sanji’s interest as a chef was peaked. “Let me assist, if possible. I’d love to learn some recipes!”

“Hey, mister, how does this waver thing work?” Nami questioned Pagaya as she and Usopp were still looking at the waver curiously.

“Oh, you must not know about Dials.” Conis spoke up and almost every Straw Hat turned to look at her in confusion.

“A Dial?” Half the crew asked in unison.

“Yes, did you not see any on your path here?” Conis tilted her head cutely.

“We came by the Knock Up Stream.” Robin replied, making both Conis and Pagaya gape at the pirates in shock.

“T-To think anyone would ride that current…” Pagaya shook his head in disbelief.

“I thought that was just a story.” Conis was still trying to get over her shock.

“Hey, hey, Pagaya, can I try out the waver?” Nami asked, clearly enamored with that vessel.

“Oh, you really shouldn’t!” Pagaya raised his hands to dissuade her. “It’s a very finicky vehicle, the slightest error can see you losing control and crashing in the sea clouds! It normally takes ten years of practice to fully control a waver.”

“TEN YEARS?!” Usopp exclaimed with his eyes bugging out.

“Aww…I wanted to try it too.” Luffy grumbled while looking at the waver.

“I’ve been practicing since I was a little girl, and I’ve only recently gotten the hang of it myself.” Conis backed up her father’s claims of the difficult learning curve.

“Just one try, please?” Nami broke out the puppy dog eyes.

“W-Well…I suppose if you were careful…” Pagaya had little choice but to acquiesce. He’d never had much defense to that look. Conis had certainly used it plenty in her childhood.

After a short explanation on how to operate the waver, along with common mistakes that beginners often made, Nami was ready to give it a try. She gently pressed her foot on the accelerator pedal and the waver shot off over the sea clouds.

“Woohoo!” Nami whooped with joy as she turned the waver and kicked up a spray of clouds. “This is wonderful!”

“She’s doing it!” Chopper cheered, amped up at Nami’s success.

“Wavers are built light for the sake of speed. So even a small wave can cause an inexperienced rider to crash. One needs to understand the sea and learn to anticipate the waves.” Pagaya explained to the blue sea dwellers. “I’ve never seen someone take to a waver so easily! She’s incredible!”

“You’re wonderful, Nami!” Sanji yelled out his praise with hearts in his eyes.

“Hey Nami, do you think I can ride it next?!” Luffy called out, still ready to give it a try.

“There’s a trick to it!” Nami yelled back as she came back around towards the beach. “Your touch isn’t delicate enough, Luffy!” She teased as she passed by, giving him a wink as she stuck out her tongue. A press of the accelerator and she was blasting out into the White-White Sea again.

“Hey!” Luffy exclaimed after her.

“His touch is delicate where it matters.” Mikita whispered into Vivi’s ear with a grin.

“Mikita!” Vivi giggled back, catching the eye of Robin.

Nami was enjoying the waver immensely. She’d never thought that a vessel could glide over the waves so quickly without the aid of the wind. “I wonder if this would work on the regular ocean too?” Nami pondered as she sped along until Angel Beach was barely visible. “Now I really hope ours can be fixed!” Knowing that they’d been invited for a meal, and that Luffy would be chomping at the bit to eat, Nami turned the waver back towards the beach. Unlike Pagaya, she made a perfect stop, the waver skimming over the shallow waters and then up to the pagoda in a smooth slide. “That was awesome!” She declared while stepping out of the waver.

“You were amazing, Nami!” Conis praised the orangette with a bright smile.

“Yes, I’ve never known anyone to ride a waver so perfectly on their first try.” Pagaya joined in on the praise. “Ah, but forgive me, we should head to my home soon. Sky Lobster does not stay good for very long after it’s caught.”

“Food!” Luffy was now the one in a rush, ushering Pagaya along to not let the lobsters’ spoil.

“Glutton.” Sanji rolled his eyes at the typical response of his Captain.

As they made their way up the long staircase to Pagaya and Conis’s home, they noticed what looked to be a quarry. Pagaya was happy to explain that they cut island cloud there to make building material. As he went into the distinctions between island cloud and sea cloud, compared to regular clouds, Luffy completely tuned out all of the big words he didn’t understand. But Robin seemed interested and even Nami was nodding along in understanding.

-Pagaya’s Home-

“Dinner will be ready in a bit, please make yourselves at home.” Pagaya offered his hospitality to his blue sea guests.

“I hope you’ll let me help out.” Sanji smiled, looking forward to learning about a new cuisine that most of the world had never heard of.

“Of course, thank you very much.” Pagaya gave a nod to the chef as they both headed into the kitchen with the basket filled with Sky Lobster.

“I can teach you a bit about Dials, if you’d like.” Conis offered as the Straw Hats lounged on the cloud couches. She held up a spiral shell and handed it to Luffy. “Speak into this.”

Luffy took the shell, looking it over curiously. With a shrug he spoke the first thing that came to mind. “Usopp, you idiot!”

“Hey! What did I do?!” Usopp barked at Luffy with sharp teeth.

“Hehe…now press the apex of the shell.” Conis giggled at the two of them.

“Apex is the top, right?” Luffy pressed it, much to the surprise of everyone, the top of the shell actually depressed!

“Usopp, you idiot!” Luffy’s voice emerged from the shell. “Hey! What did I do?!” Usopp’s voice followed. “Hehe…now press the apex of the shell.” Conis’s voice came next before the shell went silent.

“The shell copied our voices!” Luffy exclaimed in shock.

“So, that is what you call a Dial?” Robin quickly put the pieces together.

“Yes, this is a Tone Dial, it records sounds.” Conis nodded to the archaeologist. “We usually record music with them.” She picked up a different spiraled shell next and wound her arm around a few times. “This is a Wind Dial and it stores air. If you force air into it for half an hour, then you can use it to blast out wind for up to thirty minutes on command.” She pressed the side of the shell and a strong breeze blew from the hole in the shell. “Larger versions of Wind Dials are what we use to propel wavers, skates, boards, and even boats.”

“That’s amazing!” Chopper had sparkles in his eyes. “Do you guys make Dials?”

“Oh no,” Conis shook her head. “We collect them from the sandbars and reefs found in the shallows of the White-White Sea. The shellfish that form them use the abilities as a means to help them survive. Once the shellfish dies, and as long as the shell itself is still intact, we can collect them and put the Dial to use in our daily lives.”

“Do you have Dials for everything?” Mikita was very curious about them now. To think that these shells could do what they’d already seen was amazing enough.

“There are many Dials.” Conis nodded as she pressed on the almost translucent shell that had been made into a lamp. The shell lit up much like a lightbulb to everyone’s amazement. “This is a Lamp Dial, as you can guess, it stores light and releases it on command.”

“That’s so neat!” Nami grinned at the Lamp Dial. That could be very useful if all you had to do to gather light was leave it out in the sun.

“The civilization of Skypiea owes much to the power of Dials.” Conis smiled fondly as she turned off the Lamp Dial. “There are so many Dials that make living here possible. Flame Dials that store heat, Scent Dials that retain fragrance, Vision Dials that can archive pictures, even Cloud Dials that help us make the Milky Roads you’ve seen already.”

“Gah! Are you trying to kill me?!” Sanji could be heard yelling from the kitchen. “Throw it away!”

“Sanji sounds like he’s having fun.” Luffy chuckled from his seat in between Vivi and Mikita.

“I think he’s overwhelmed.” Usopp shrugged with a grin on his face.

“Can you tell me more about those Cloud Dials?” Nami leaned towards Conis with a smile. The mere thought of being able to make the sea clouds on command was a tantalizing prospect.

“Of course, we can talk over dinner.” Conis agreed with a smile of her own.

“Dinner is ready!” Pagaya called out a short time later as he and Sanji began to bring in plates of food. Everyone had one Sky Lobster for themselves, a fact that made Pagaya happy. “Sky Lobster can be frozen to prevent them from spoiling, but they just never taste as good afterwards.” He explained to Sanji as the group ate.

“It’s delicious!” Luffy declared with a huge smile.

“This lobster is great!” Mikita agreed, covering her mouth as she chewed and savored the flavors.

“I’m hoping to take some Skypiean spices and herbs back with us.” Sanji told his crew with a smile. “With any luck, I might find blue sea equivalents, so that we can have some Skypiean cuisine from time-to-time.”

“Sounds great!” Usopp gave him a thumbs up. “I’ve never had food like this before.”

“So, how many Cloud Dials are there?” Nami asked Conis as they ate.

“The most common is the Milky Dial, which produces the sea clouds.” Conis started off with the easiest one. “The larger the shell, the greater the amount of sea cloud it can produce. Small ones can be attached to things like the front of a boat to constantly produce a path for it to float on.”

“So, you could practically go anywhere if your vessel was equipped with a few of those.” Nami understood the value of such a Dial easily.

“Yes, there’s also a subtype of the Milky Dial that produces a special cloud known as a Ball Cloud. They’re thicker and have enough support that a person can stand on them. In a way they’re closer to island cloud than sea cloud, but the Ball Clouds will fade away after some time.”

“That sounds incredibly useful.” Nami was making sure to memorize these explanations. It would be great if they could take some of these useful Dials with them.

“The last one is very rare,” Conis mentioned with a thinking look on her face. “In fact, I believe it’s actually extinct in several parts of the White-White Sea. But it’s called an Eisen Dial. It produces Iron Cloud, which has the strength of iron, but the malleability of clouds. In the distant past, it was used for battle and warfare, but overhunting of the shellfish led to their population disappearing. I’m not sure when the last time was that someone actually found a working Eisen Dial.”

“Same for the old Jet Dials.” Pagaya shook his head. “They were much more powerful than Wind Dials, but they were overhunted and now you can’t find Jet Dials anymore.” He perked up as if recalling something. “Ah, yes, you said you found a very old waver, correct? I’d be happy to take a look at it for you.”

“Father is a Dial-craft Engineer.” Conis explained to the confused pirates. “He can make and repair most anything that uses a Dial to function.

“We’d really appreciate it!” Nami was all too eager to try and get the old waver they found fixed.

-Angel Beach ~ After Lunch-

“Hmm, it’s very old indeed.” Pagaya mentioned as he looked at the two-hundred year old waver.

“Can it be fixed, mister?” Luffy was hopeful that maybe he’d be able to ride this one.

“I’m not sure, I’d have to take it apart to inspect the Dial first and foremost.” Pagaya explained, tapping his hand on the exposed part of the Dial. “If the Dial is cracked, I may be able to seal it up and repair it. But if it’s missing pieces, then I’m afraid there’s nothing I can do but replace it entirely.” He accidentally broke off a part of the old, half-rotten wood of the waver. “My apologies. It seems like it’ll require an entirely new body at the very least anyway.”

“You there! In the suspicious ship! Halt!” A man called out as a group of what looked to be soldiers came down the stairs towards Angel Beach.

“Who’re those guys?” Luffy looked confused as the men dropped to the ground as soon as they set foot on the beach and then army crawled towards them.

“That’s Captain McKinley of the White Berets.” Pagaya informed him as he stood up.

“Battalion, halt!” McKinley ordered and the soldier all stood up. “Heso!” They greeted, putting their left hands behind their head and extending their index and pinky fingers in some form of salute.

“Heso!” Conis returned the greeting.

“Good work, heso.” Pagaya gave a bow to the soldiers.

“So, you’re the ones from the blue sea! The nine trespassers!” McKinley accused and all of the Straw Hats looked at him confused.

“Huh?!” Conis took a step away from Luffy.

“Trespassers?!” Pagaya stepped to the side, placing himself between Conis and everyone else.

“What’s that?” Luffy blinked at the captain.

“Don’t try and feign innocence!” McKinley held up a photo. “Amazon, the inspector at Heaven’s Gate, sent us this picture that she took with a Vision Dial. The photo clearly showed the Straw Hats aboard the Going Merry.

“But, Captain McKinley, there must be a mistake!” Pagaya defended their new friends. “These people don’t seem like criminals to me.”

“Did they just call us trespassers?” Vivi looked at Robin to confirm what she’d heard.

“They did.” Robin nodded to the princess. “That entrance fee back at the gate. We didn’t pay it.”

“But that old lady said we could pass!” Chopper exclaimed in shock.

“Fret not!” McKinley stated with authority. “Illegal entry is only a Class-11 crime. If you simply pay the fine, then you’ll have your record wiped clean and become legal tourists immediately.”

“Well why didn’t you say so?” Sanji sighed, exhaling smoke from his cigarette. “What’s the fine?”

“Simply ten times more than the entrance fee.” McKinley informed the pirates. “So, that would be Ten Billion Extols for each of you, for a total of Ninety Billion Extols.”

“What the hell is an Extol?!” Usopp threw his hands up in the air. “No one has explained anything about your currency! Do you know what a Beri is? Do you use them? What’s the exchange rate?”

“Beri?” McKinley looked confused for a second. “Ah, right, the currency of the blue sea.” He took on a thinking look. “At the moment the rate is ten-thousand Extols to a single Beri.”

“Alright…so Ninety Billion Extol divided by ten-thousand is…” Usopp was doing the math in his head when Nami’s voice bellowed from the Going Merry.

“NINE MILLION BERI?!” Nami roared at the White Berets. “Are you stupid?! Who would ever pay that much just to enter a country?!” Her teeth were like sharp fangs as she raged.

“I should warn you,” McKinley spoke up as Vivi tried to calm Nami down on the Going Merry. “We White Berets serve God’s Vassals! You will only make things worse for yourselves if you resist!” That didn’t put any of the Straw Hats in a better mood. McKinley’s eyes were drawn to the broken waver near Luffy’s feet. “Why is this waver broken? There’s a law against blue sea dwellers damaging Skypiea property. It’s a Class-10 offense.”

“I’m afraid you’re mistake.” Pagaya raised his hands to try and placate the situation. “That belongs to them.”

“Yeah, it’s ours.” Luffy nodded.

“That’s a suspicious story.” McKinley looked between Pagaya and Luffy. “Blue sea people don’t have wavers. If this property was stolen from Skypiea then that’s a Class-9 offense.”

“Are you just making this up now?!” Luffy growled at the captain. “You want me to knock you out?”

“Hold your tongue!” McKinley glared at Luffy. “Verbally abusing an official in the course of carrying out his duties is a Class-6 crime!”

“You’re starting to tick me off.” Luffy glared right back at McKinley.

“If you are going to resist, then I have no choice! I declare you Class-5 criminals and sentence you to cloud drifting in the name of God Enel!”

“Cloud drifting? That sounds kind of cool.” Luffy ignored the rest to focus on that.

“No! Luffy, cloud drifting is where they drop you, ship and all, onto a tiny sea cloud with no way back! You’ll be trapped there until you’re nothing but bones! It’s a death sentence!”

“Arrest them!” McKinley ordered and the White Berets raised bows already nocked with arrows. The fact that the arrowheads were cone-type seashells was odd.

“What was that about a God?” Usopp had his slingshot at the ready, his pistols were back on the Merry.

“I thought Gods were supposed to be kind.” Mikita glared at the soldiers.

“Gods? If you serve a God, then why did he send you here?” Luffy looked genuinely confused and all of the White Berets nearly face-faulted in surprise at the odd question.

“Did you not listen to anything I said?!” McKinley bellowed at Luffy. “We White Berets serve the God Enel’s Vassals! We carry out the law on their behalf!”

“But aren’t Gods supposed to be om…omnoi…omni…portent?” Luffy was trying to recall the word he barely remembered learning.

“Omnipotent, Luffy.” Sanji pinched the bridge of his nose.

“Yeah that.” Luffy pointed at Sanji. “If your God is omni-important,” Mikita cracked up at the mispronunciation. “Then why doesn’t he come try and arrest me himself?”

“Y-You dare blaspheme against God Enel?!” McKinley and all of the White Berets, along with Conis and Pagaya, looked terrified as they began to back away from Luffy. “You fool…you’ve brought down God’s Judgment upon yourself!”

“Huh?” Luffy cocked his head to the side, not understanding. He did however, notice the sudden build up of static electricity in the air. “You guys should move.” Luffy looked over his shoulder at Mikita, Sanji, and Usopp. The complete lack of any suggestion in his tone had his nakama putting a large distance between them in mere seconds.

A bright blue-white beam of pure electricity dropped from the clouds overhead and engulfed Luffy. All of the Straw Hats stared in shock, both from the sudden strike, and the fact that it looked rather similar to the move that Luffy had used right before they’d been launched by the Knock Up Stream.

Conis and Pagaya covered their eyes from the light while lamenting the death of Luffy. The White Berets shieled their eyes, but faced the judgment as was their duty to witness it. As the blinding light faded, and the island cloud settled back to the ground, the results were revealed.

“Nice try, jackass! Next time, give it you’re best shot!” Luffy laughed, still sparking from taking the electric blast head on.

“EEEEHHHH?!” McKinley, the White Berets, Conis, and Pagaya all had their jaws on the ground and their eyes bugged out.

“That was a Devil Fruit, wasn’t it?” Zoro narrowed his eyes at what he’d seen.

“Yes, that wasn’t natural in anyway.” Robin confirmed while watching what would happen next.

“So, you want to pick a fight with me, huh?” Luffy looked directly toward were he’d felt the attack come from through the electrical connection he’d traced while being hit.

-God’s Domain ~ Upper Yard ~ Enel’s Palace-

“Eh?!” Enel, the ‘God’ of Skypiea had an absolutely stunned look on his face. His eyes were wide, his mouth agape, and he’d nearly fallen off of his comfortable couch-sized throne.

Enel was a pale-skinned man with a well-toned yet somewhat wiry build He had a slim face, that usually had a relaxed, half-lidded expression accentuated by a calm, confident smile. He had blond hair from what little could be seen under his white head wrap. His eyebrows, however, were black and rather thick. He had grayish-blue eyes with prominent bottom lashes. His nose was slim with a notable flat bridge that had several lines run horizontally across it. Very distinctly, Enel’s earlobes stretched all the way to his chest, being weighed down by gold earrings with diamond-shaped pendants.

“M-My Lord Enel?” A man with thick black hair and beard, wearing a white toga spoke up. “Is, is something the matter?”

“No.” Enel denied. “Just another judgment rendered.” He wouldn’t let them know that one of the intruders had just survived his judgment. “Call my Priests. The trials for the rest of the trespassers will soon begin.”

“Yes, God Enel.” The toga-wearing man bowed loud and backed away.

Ooohhh…Enel you just picked a fight with someone that’s not afraid of you!

The Straw Hats learn about Dials, have lunch, and then get accused of trespassing and about half a dozen other crimes!

Someone FINALLY explained what an Extol is! It only took them until after it became an issue to do so, of course!

No way in hell is Nami letting anyone spend Nine Million Beri of her…*ahem*…the Crew’s money to enter a country!

Now that the White Berets, Conis, and Pagaya have witnessed Luffy’s immunity to God’s ‘Judgment’ what will happen afterwards?

Me thinks the Priests are not going to have a fun time with the Straw Hats if they press the issue!

Sky Combat versus the Straw Hats is a go!

What’s next for our favorite pirate crew?

Keep reading to find out!

Until I get your reviews, later!

Christian Jeffress

The conceited idiot with a God complex, is about to get a rude awakening, though his reaction to Luffy tanking his attack with a smile was definitely funny. Thanks for another great chapter

Jeremie

hmm so many options for those cloud dials as Usopp and Nami could add them to the ship to make it harder for the marines to actually get an accurate shot at them or use them to hide while in thick fog lol. Obviously some of these dials are also used in Nami's climatact staff as well. I could also see the Iron Cloud dial being used to create a shield around the ship lol

Kairomaru

Plenty of Dial options to choose from! Heck, take apart the Maxim and steal some Thunder Dials while they're at it! Luffy could always recharge them!

Steve

This was great! The funniest part of the White Beret scene is that if the Straw Hats had just paid the entry fee at the gate it would've only been 900,000 Beri in total, which is basically nothing. I'm definitely excited to see how the Straw Hats Haki stacks up against the Priests 'Mantra'. Also excited to see what you have planned with the dials. I can imagine Usopp and Nami getting pretty creative though.

Kairomaru

Glad you liked it! Yeah, things are about to get less fun for the Priests! lol But yeah, Dials are going to be collected and not forgotten about later.
