Chapter 30 – Fairy Law

“Natsu!” Lucy rushed to her boyfriend the moment she saw him on a stretcher. “Are you alright?!” She immediately chastised herself for asking such a dumb question.

“I’m fine.” Natsu assured her with that wide grin of his that she loved. “I won and taught Gajeel a lesson.”

“I’m just glad that you’re okay.” Lucy leaned down to kiss his lips softly. “I was worried.”

“Why are all of the Phantom Lord Mages kneeling on the ground like scolded children?” Mira questioned at the odd sight.

“It was Gildarts.” Gray approached the group, still shirtless. “When the guild hall was blown apart, he just unleashed his Magic power and no one wanted to fight anymore.”

“Yeah, that sounds like my dad.” Cana chuckled as she saw Gildarts standing nearby the surrendered Mages.

BOOM

Lightning flashed in the sky as thunder shook the air. Thick dark clouds were swirling around the destroyed mobile guild of Phantom Lord. The lake was roiling with waves that were being pushed away from the epicenter of the battle of Wizard Saints. The ground began to shake as well and more than a few Fairy Tail Mages stumbled.

“What the hell is going on?!” Lucy looked towards the Phantom Lord mobile guild hall in shock as the Magic power continued to increase.

“Hehehe…” Natsu chuckled, making Lucy turn to look at him. “Only gramps can do Magic like that!”

-Makarov vs Jose-

“Dead Wave!” Jose roared out his spell as what appeared to be wailing ghosts tore apart the floor while they sped towards Makarov.

“Hmmph!” Makarov brought his hands together in a few quick patterns before forming a triangle shape with his hands. “Haaa!” Two concentric rings of pure magic formed around the old man before blasting a wave of force at the incoming spell. The Dead Wave stalled against the other spell before both exploded more powerfully than any standard spells could hope to.

“The Amaterasu Formula, is it?” Jose noticed the particular style of Magic that Makarov had just used. It normally took a decent amount of time to cast such a spell.

“Yah!” Makarov’s left hand was engulfed in a golden light which he fired as multiple beams at Jose.

“Fool!” Jose responded with an equally powerful spell. Multiple wailing phantoms forming from his magical aura to clash with the beams and counter them.

“It’s impressive that you have so much power at your age.” Makarov spoke after the clash of spells. “Your place among the Ten Wizard Saints is well-earned.” Jose only looked down at the shorter man with disdain. “If only you’d used it properly.”

“I have no need to hear your lectures and recriminations!” Jose declared as he moved his arms into position in front of him. His hands clenched into fists before splaying open with his fingers wide. He moved his fingers so that his right hand had the middle and ring finger extended, while his left had the index and pinky extended. “Shadow Land!”

All sound and light vanished as the spell near instantly spread across the large damaged room. All that anyone inside or outside could see was a spherical void of inky blackness. The Darkness Spell made no sounds whatsoever, just stayed where it was cast until, with a snap, it disappeared entirely. What was left was perfectly smooth edges of everything the blackness had touched. Anything that had been caught within the sphere was simply dust blowing away in the wind.

“Did you think you could finish me off so easily, Jose?” Makarov was surrounded by a sphere of bright golden light.

“Hmph, it seems you’re still worthy of being called a Wizard Saint after all.” Jose scoffed at the old man. “But how long can you keep up at your age, Makarov?!”

The two Mages launched more powerful spells at each other. Jose’s phantoms and shades swarmed off his body toward Makarov. Blasts of light scattered the creations to nothing. Rings of the Amaterasu Formula surrounded Jose and went off like powerful bombs. The red-haired man simply scattered the blasts with a wave of his chilling purple aura of Magic.

“Shade Colossus!” Jose cast with his hands raised into the air. Shadows and darkness swirled together to form a massive Shade. The creation of Magic and darkness let out a baleful howl as its massive right fist was sent at Makarov.

“Enough of this!” Makarov declared as he used his Titan Magic to become a massive giant. He was suddenly so tall and wide that he shattered the remainder of the ceiling and the floor nearly gave way underneath him. He batted the gargantuan Shade away with a brilliantly glowing fist, scattering the golem-like entity into nothing but wisps of ethernano.

“You think I’m afraid of you because you got a little bigger?” Jose mocked with a laugh at the short old man for turning himself into a giant. “That just makes you a bigger target!”

“According to the Fairy Tail rules…I will give you to the count of three.” Makarov’s voice rumbled out in his giant form. “On your knees!”

“Huh?” Jose cocked an eyebrow at Makarov’s words. The Phantom Lord Guild Master’s face was a portrait of disdain.

“One…” Makarov counted as he brought his massive hands together.

“You demand that the leader of this country’s greatest Guild get on his knees and grovel before you?!” Jose bellowed in fury and rejection. His black-purple aura flaring powerfully and shattering every solid object in the room to dust that was immediately blown away in the howling winds of their clashing Magic. “Don’t make me laugh!”

“Two…” Makarov counted again while a brilliantly glowing ball of Magic appeared between his palms.

“You’re the one that should be groveling before me!” Jose moved his arms in a wide circle, leaving a ring of blackness behind. A motion of his hands before clapping them together saw the ring of black expand and become dozens of purple rings of magical script that covered a wide area. “But I’ve decided that it’s no longer enough! I’ll send you and all of your precious children to your graves in one spell!” The flaring power of the deranged Wizard Saint became a pillar of purple-black light in the center of his dozens of rings of magic script. “Hell Howling!

From the dark script emerged uncountable numbers of shades and phantoms. All of them screaming and wailing in ways that made the very air tremble. Ethernano in the air became visible from the pure concentration of Magic power. The phantoms seemingly consumed all ethernano and continued to grow stronger. Makarov’s giant body was surrounded while the shades and phantoms poured out of the ruined guild hall and spread out towards Magnolia. It was as if the Gates of Hell had been thrown open for the denizens to escape into the world and destroy everything in their path!

-Shore-

“What the hell are those things?!” Alzack questioned as he pointed both of his Magic Revolvers at the wave of phantoms rushing towards them all.

“Is it getting colder?” Levy wondered as she wrapped her arms around herself and shivered.

“Are they getting bigger?” Elfman blinked while in his normal form. The shades seemingly kept getting larger as they flew over the water towards the shore.

“No…” Mira nearly gaped at what they were seeing. “That’s Forbidden Magic.”

“Mira?” Lisanna looked at her older sister in concern.

“Jose…he used the spell called ‘Hell Howling’…it’s a form of Darkness Magic that can destroy an entire region if its invoked.” Mira shook her head that the Phantom Lord Master would cast such a spell. “It’s indiscriminate and kills everything in its path!”

“Oh shit!” Gray ran towards the shoreline as a frozen mist emanated from his body. “I’ll freeze the whole damn wave!”

A blinding light from the destroyed mobile guild proved that no one needed to be concerned.

-Makarov vs Jose-

“Three…” Makarov finished his count and the wailing specters around him vanished from the pulse of light. “I invoke…Fairy Law.” The old man’s voice seemed to resound throughout the area without trying.

A titanic golden Magic Circle appeared over the Phantom Lord Guild Hall. It depicted the Fairy Tail emblem surrounded by magic script. Light poured off of it and parted the swirling clouds. Every shade and phantom shrieked as they were obliterated by the golden light. The several rings of purple script cracked before breaking into nothing, canceling Jose’s most powerful spell completely. Jose stared up at the spell taking place as his own aura of Magic power was blown away like a candle flame.

-Shore-

“What is this light?” Gray blinked as everyone was bathed in the golden glow. “It’s…warm.”

“Fairy Law.” Gildarts answered simply as he watched on.

“Fairy…Law?” Gray was still confused.

“It’s a sacred light that destroys the darkness.” Erza explained just loud enough to be heard by everyone. “It only affects those that the caster sees as enemies. It’s considered a legendary spell, and one of the Great Magics.”

-Makarov vs Jose-

Jose was white as a sheet, figuratively and literally. The man looked to have almost aged a few decades in the span of seconds. His red-hair had turned white, he was shaking in terror, and his clothes all looked like they’d been sun-bleached for years. No sounds came from the Phantom Lord Master’s gaping mouth as his eyes remained wide in fear. If one were able to check his Magic power, they’d find it drained to almost nothing as well. Something that would take a Mage of Jose’s strength months to recover from.

“You will never come near Fairy Tail again.” Makarov stated with finality, already reverted to his normal stature. “After what you’ve done today, the Council will not overlook your actions. You’ve only yourself to blame for whatever befalls you, Jose.” The old man turned his back on the other Guild Master and walked away. A few seconds later and Jose dropped to his knees, unintentionally fulfilling Makarov’s demand from before he’d cast Fairy Law.

-Shore ~ In Front of the Destroyed Fairy Tail Guild Hall-

“I’m back.” Makarov greeted his brats with a simple wave as he floated down to the ground.

“Master!” The entire Guild cheered happily at seeing him safe and sound.

“Well…we really made a mess this time, huh?” Makarov looked over the destroyed building.

“Master, why did Phantom start this war with us anyway?” Max asked curiously. A few other guild members nodding along with him, wondering what the all-out assault had been triggered by.

“Jose was misinformed about a few things, but refused to see the flaws in his own logic.” Makarov waved off. “In the end, he decided to forgo all thought and brute force his way into getting what he wanted. We’ll let the Council deal with Phantom.” He’d take Lucy aside later on and fill her in about her father’s involvement. There was no need to drag the newest member’s connection into the light.

“M-Master…” Lucy looked at the destroyed Guild Hall with tears at the corner of her eyes. “Can…can we rebuild all of this?”

“That’s some face you have there.” Makarov gave a small grin to the blonde. “Happiness and sadness…while we can’t share them completely…we can share them to an extent. That’s what a Guild’s all about.” The short old man smiled at his children. “One person’s happiness is everybody’s happiness. One person’s anger becomes everyone’s anger. And one person’s tears are everyone’s tears.” He mentioned at seeing a single tear escape the Celestial Spirit Mage’s eye. “There’s no need for tears. Lift your head up and smile. You are a member of Fairy Tail.” Lucy broke into a smile at the Master’s words. “We can always rebuild as long as we have each other!”

“Yeah!” The entire Guild cheered together. Even the injured Natsu gave his best cheer, much to the fretting of his Mates.

Even so…this was much more than any regular incident that my brats get up to.’ Makarov thought as he looked back at the wrecked Guild Hall. ‘This is going to bring the wrath of the Council down on us…’ He knew that Phantom would take the majority of the blame, of course, but that still left Fairy Tail in the Council’s crosshairs…again. ‘If this goes well, maybe we’ll only get a fine…that would be alright…’ The old man felt a river of tears fall from his eyes, knowing that the Council would nearly bleed them dry over this!

Only an hour later, at most, and Fairy Tail, along with the restrained Phantom Lord Mages, found the area surrounded by over two-hundred Rune Knights. Apparently, they had indeed been called by one of the citizens of Magnolia. Natsu would’ve suggested they all split, if he was able to move at the moment.

“Nobody move!” The Squad Captain, as denoted by the differently colored robe and hat that he wore, demanded of the Mages. “We are the Enforcement and Detainment Division, under orders from the Council to investigate this incident.”

“Hey, we still have injured!” One member of Fairy Tail called out. This was followed by several more agreements from more of the Guild.

“If you cooperate then this will all be over much more quickly.” The Captain replied loudly to be heard over the ruckus.

“Damn it…” Makarov had crocodile tears running down his cheeks, much to the shock of the rest of Fairy Tail.

What followed was questioning and the taking of statements. All the Phantom Lord Mages were arrested, pending trials since their Guild was the instigator of the attack. The remaining members of the Element 3 were taken into custody when they were found on the shore of the lake. Gajeel, however, was hidden from the Rune Knights at the whispered request of Natsu. Levy, Jet, Droy, and Nab had snuck the stretcher with the unconscious Iron Dragon Slayer on it into a nearby storehouse that Fairy Tail owned. He was placed in a bed hidden behind a large amount of crates to rest.

When asked why he wanted Gajeel not to be arrested and taken away, Natsu had simply grinned and said it was because Gajeel was a Dragon Slayer. The light in the pink-haired man’s eyes also told his Mates that the Magma Dragon Slayer wanted to fight Gajeel again in the future. To be fair, that wouldn’t be possible if Gajeel was imprisoned for who knew how long.

The overall questioning lasted for the better part of a week. Every Fairy Tail Guild member was questioned multiple times, to check for consistency in their account of the incident. Makarov had to fill out paperwork for most of that time, including a full report on the incident and what had started it. The old man wanted to retire before the first day was done. When all was said and done, the Fairy Tail Mages were left to their devices while the Rune Knights returned to the Council. All of the information would be gone over and punishment of any kind would be delivered at a later date.

-Two Days Later-

The Fairy Tail Guild was hard at work rebuilding their Guild Hall. With the destruction of the old one, Makarov had drawn up some basic plans for a new and improved version. Unfortunately, an architect the Master was not, so the entire Guild was thankful to have Reedus around to draw up legible plans following Makarov’s ideas. With Laki and Mira’s Magics, lumber wasn’t an issue in the least. All of the wood needed was not only available upon request, but able to be grown to size and length perfectly. The best part, in Makarov’s eyes, was that it was all free!

“Heavy…” Natsu grunted as he carried a dozen large wooden beams on his back.

“Natsu…are you sure you should be straining yourself like that?” Lisanna worried over him.

“Yeah…I’m fine…” Natsu smiled at her brightly. “I ate tons of Mira’s healing vegetables and even took all of the potions that Porlyusica’s prescribed. I feel back to normal already.” Mira smiled happily that she’d been able to help Natsu recover faster. The food she grew was pretty bland, but she could grow vegetables and fruits infused with Magic and capable of boosting the natural healing process significantly.

“You shouldn’t worry about him, Lisanna.” Gray looked at Natsu like he was an idiot. “He’s the one trying to carry all the beams at once like a moron.” Gray suddenly felt like someone was glaring at him, but when he turned to look, he didn’t see anyone.

“Haha!” Natsu laughed at the single beam that Gray was carrying over his shoulder. “You’re just a weakling. So, you can only carry that much.”

“What?” Gray glared at Natsu. “I could carry double that, if I wanted!” A few moments later and Gray was indeed carrying a tied stack of two dozen wooden beams on his back. “H-how’s…this…?” He grunted out as he tried to walk forward. He felt the glare again and tried to look at who it was. Gray’s distraction cost him as the weight of the beams became too much and nearly buried him as he fell.

“How pitiful!” Natsu laughed as Gray groaned and started pulling himself out of the pile. “Did you see that Happy?”

“Aye!” Happy chuckled along with Natsu.

“You alright under there, Gray?” Ur questioned her former student with a grin.

“Yes, Master Ur…” Gray refused to meet her eyes, embarrassed at being do easily provoked by Natsu’s words.

That had been the highlight of yesterday for Fairy Tail. Ur had decided to join up, even though she was still recovering and would be unable to go on Quests for at least a couple months. The Fairy Tail Guild Mark was on her left hip, partially hidden by her black pants, in a dark purple color that seemed to hold significance for the woman. Gray had been ecstatic to see her joining and had mentioned that she’d be S-Class in no time once she was recovered.

“Hey, you three!” Erza called out, she was decked out in full workman’s clothes along with gloves and a hard hat. “If you’ve got time to play around, then carry these beams instead!”

“Erza is really into this, huh?” Cana grinned at her Dragon Sister fondly. She was also in workman’s clothes, but had taken off the long-sleeved top and tied it around her waist, leaving her bikini-covered breasts free to the air, as she preferred.

“So is the Master.” Mira giggled as they watched Makarov, in his giant form, place the large wooden beams together like he was building a huge model.

“Mr. Foreman, where does this beam go?” Erza looked up at Makarov’s towering form.

“Set it over there.” Makarov pointed off to the side.

“What’s with the ‘Mr. Foreman’ stuff?” Jet blinked as he moved a wheelbarrow full of gravel towards the back of the construction area.

-Fairy Tail Storehouse ~ Temporary Infirmary-

“Haa…” Levy sighed as she looked over Gajeel. The Iron Dragon Slayer had been in-and-out of consciousness for the last day, but he was healing well with Porlyusica’s potions. Mira had refused to make healing fruits or vegetables for him, a bit petty perhaps, but Levy could definitely understand. Not to mention that Gajeel hadn’t been awake to eat such things anyway.

“You don’t have to look after me...if it makes you sigh like that.” Gajeel spoke up from the bed. Levy turned to look at his face, still bandaged here and there, and locked onto his slitted red eyes. “I didn’t ask you to help me.”

“No, you didn’t, but I’m doing it anyway.” Levy gave him a deadpan stare. Gajeel tsked and looked away after a second. “Thanks to Miss Porlyusica’s potions, you’ve recovered a fair bit.” She informed him while taking the cool rag off his forehead and setting it aside. Looking over the remnants of the burn he’d gotten from Natsu’s lava, Levy wrote the word ‘Heal’ in the air in soft green light. The bluenette pushed the word to the injury and smiled when it healed up completely.

“Mmm…” Gajeel unconsciously let out a hum as the minor pain faded away. “How long have I been out?”

“Six days,” Levy informed him as she wrote a different word in the air, ‘Message’ this time. “Lisanna, could you bring a meal to the infirmary and let Master know that Gajeel is awake?” She spoke to the spell before tapping it. The word glowed and then zipped off for Lisanna as the recipient. It was only a short-range spell, but it could cover the entire Guild area easily enough.

“I don’t need your charity.” Gajeel looked at Levy with a grimace.

“You and Natsu beat the hell out of each other, but that’s over now.” Levy rolled her eyes at his stubbornness. “Natsu is already back on his feet and helping to rebuild the Guild Hall.” She shot him a look with a little smirk on her lips. “I’m sure you don’t want to be laid up longer than necessary when he’s already healed.”

“Grkh!” Gajeel ground his teeth in agitation at her remark.

Hit the nail on the head.’ Levy thought while smothering a giggle. Gajeel and Natsu had some similarities, regardless if either man acknowledged the fact. “Here,” She wrote the word ‘Iron’ in the air and it turned into the material a second later. “Have a snack before your food gets here, I’m sure you’re hungry.” She handed the iron bar to him.

“I’m not…” Gajeel started to say, only for a loud growl to come from his stomach. “Fine…” He took the iron from Levy and bit into it.

“So stubborn.” Levy shook her head at him.

“You got a bathroom around here?” Gajeel had already eaten the entire metal bar in a matter of seconds.

“Over there.” Levy pointed at the corner where a single small room was. The half-bath with just a toilet and sink wasn’t used much, but it was easier to have it when they brought the supplies into the storehouse.

While in the bathroom, Gajeel washed his face a bit, after removing the bandages. His face wouldn’t even get a new scar it seemed, so that was whatever. He’d be good to go soon enough. Right now, his body still ached almost everywhere and his Magic was low. Maybe it would be better to accept some help for just a little longer?

Live strong, Gajeel, grow up and find a good Mate for yourself.” Metalicana’s words rang in Gajeel’s head.

Shut up, rust face.’ Gajeel thought towards the memory of his Dragon Father. “What am I thinking?” He shook his head, his mane of black hair moving in turn. “I don’t need anyone’s coddling.” Levy’s face flashed in his mind briefly. “Even if the iron is good.” With a grimace he splashed more water on his face to take his mind off the petite woman. He wandered back to the lone bed and laid down, noticing from the smell that Levy had apparently changed the white sheets and blanket.

“Lunch is here!” Lisanna smiled as she brought in two meals on a tray. “I had your favorite made, Levy.” She grinned at her friend and set the plate in front of the girl.

“Thank you, Lisanna.” Levy returned the smile to the Takeover Mage.

“I wasn’t sure what you liked,” Lisanna looked at Gajeel, a hint of something in her blue eyes, before she sighed and it disappeared. “But, since you’re a Dragon Slayer, I’m pretty sure you like meat.” She placed down a larger plate that was mostly covered with a slab of grilled meat. “I hope you like Wyvern meat, my brother, Elfman, brought this back the day before you attacked our Guild the first time.”

“It’s fine.” Gajeel replied stiffly, even as his stomach growled. He sniffed, drawing in the smell of the grilled meat as well as the scent of the white-haired girl. “Right…Salamander shared the Magic, didn’t he?” He picked up the fork and knife and began to cut a large bite out of the Wyvern steak.

“You never did, huh?” Lisanna raised an eyebrow at the older Dragon Slayer.

“Like I’d share it with just anyone.” Gajeel scoffed as he brought the piece of meat to his mouth. “The ritual has meaning, it’s not something we do just because.” He stuffed his mouth with the Wyvern meat and began to chew.

“Well, I hope you find someone worth sharing it with eventually.” Lisanna gave the Iron Dragon Slayer a small smile. “No one is meant to be alone in this world, you know?”

“Hmm…” Gajeel hummed as he continued to eat. He wasn’t like Salamander; he didn’t have room in his heart for so many Mates. Iron Dragons were some of the more solitary species of Dragon. Only getting together to mate and produce offspring usually. A true Mating was fairly rare amongst them. He inexplicably found his eyes on Levy before he refocused on his food with force.

-Guild Construction Site-

“I’m hungry!” Natsu called out while patting his stomach. He’d been working most of the day, so he’d burned through his breakfast. A blur of navy-blue passed by him and he found something in his hands. “The hell?”

“Who was that?” Happy blinked at the person that sped away so quickly.

“A woman?” Mira wondered as she’d only caught a glimpse of the person.

“Hey, it’s a bento!” Natsu beamed at smelling the food inside the box. He opened it up and stopped when he saw the heart-shape in the rice. “Huh, don’t know what this is about, but it looks good!”

“Are you sure it’s safe to eat that?” Gray eyed the box warily. He’d never eat food that he didn’t know the origin of.

“Hmm?” Natsu breathed in deeply, parsing through the various scents to check for anything that might be harmful. “It just smells like food.” He replied before he looked out of the corner of his eye. Near the perimeter of the construction site, he saw a familiar Cossack hat and blue hair peeking from behind a fence. “Juvia?” Natsu wondered why she was acting so odd after giving him this bento. He could smell her scent on the box. ‘Did she make this herself?’ Deciding to try the food, Natsu picked up one of the dashimaki and ate it. “This is really good!” He beamed at the bento and began to eat more.

AAAAHHHH!!! He likes it! Natsu-sama likes my cooking!’ Juvia had hearts in her eyes as she watched Natsu eat the bento she’d made for him. “It was worth getting up early to make it.” She swooned happily from her hidden spot.

“Uh huh…” Cana could easily follow the scent that led to Juvia’s hiding spot. “Looks like another one.”

“Lucy hasn’t even gotten to the ritual yet.” Mira reminded Cana with a playful grin.

“We’ll have to talk to her then,” Erza nodded, her brown eyes locked onto Juvia’s location. “But we really should come up with a number to stop at, just in case.”

“Yeah, we should.” Cana agreed with the redhead before sipping her drink.

-Magnolia Shopping District with Lucy-

Why now? It’s been a year, and only now he decides that he wants me back?’ Lucy thought to herself with a grimace. After Makarov had told her what he’d learned from Jose, she’d been doing her best to not give away the inner turmoil she started to experience. ‘I never thought he’d go this far. Illegally hiring a Guild to bring me back by force? That’s not like the father I know…’ Her mind drifted back to one of her many sad memories growing up. Trying to make her father a rice ball and remind him that it was her birthday. He’d yelled at her harshly, berated her efforts, and she had cried the rest of her birthday away.

“But why now?” Lucy pondered to herself. “He made it very clear that he’s never had any interest in me since mom passed away.” She sighed heavily while looking up at the sky. “This caused a lot of problems for Fairy Tail. He’d do it again too…without a doubt.” The Celestial Spirit Mage let a frown mar her face. “I can’t let that happen.” It seemed that she’d need to take a short trip.

Far away in the Heartfilia Estate, Jude Heartfilia felt a cold chill suddenly. The business man put it from his mind a second later though.

The Battle of Wizard Saints has been decided!

Makarov ‘nopes’ Jose’s most powerful spell with Fairy Law. Also leaving Jose much worse for wear afterwards.

The Rune Knights came in and rounded up the Phantom Lord Mages. Natsu has Gajeel hidden away. Dragon Slayers should look out for each other, right?

Now it’s time for some Guild rebuilding! Natsu gets a surprise bento from Juvia. Unlike Canon where Gray rejected it for not knowing who made it or gave it to him. Natsu happily eats it and compliments the cooking.

Cue happy Juvia noises!

The Water Mage doesn’t go unnoticed though! The Dragon Sisters know they have a new woman to deal with. How will Juvia fair under their scrutiny?

Levy is taking care of Gajeel while he recovers. The Iron Dragon Slayer is so tsundere! He doesn’t want to admit that his heart is going ‘doki doki’! Ha!

Lucy is about to have a ‘talk’ with her father. It’s not going to be a friendly one either. How will the business man take it?

Keep reading to find out!

Until I get your reviews, later!
