Chapter 37 – Beach and Party

“It’s just as big as I remember!” Misty laughed as she and Ash stood at the edge of Vermillion Beach together.

After thoroughly celebrating yesterday, the couple had decided to spend another day in Vermillion City after Ash’s victory at the Gym. Pikachu and Gogoat needed the down time, so it was better to hang around than travel. Misty had nothing but good things to say about the large beach in the Vermillion Bay, so the two had decided to hang out here today. Hundreds of other people had apparently had the same idea since the weather was so nice. The beach was full of people, but was so large it wasn’t crowded. Everywhere you looked there were people and Pokémon playing in the sand and surf. A lot of people were relaxing on the large beach or swimming in the ocean. As expected of such a large gathering spot, there were dozens of restaurants and food stalls along the length of the beach area.

“This is way bigger than Azure Beach.” Ash mentioned as he looked out over the beach.

“They have a lot to do here too.” Misty motioned to a large sign that listed off various attractions for beach goers. A quick look over saw things like Lapras Rides, surfing lessons, fishing spots, various types of competitions set for selected dates and times, and even a large bonfire party taking place that night.

“Would you two like to rent a beach umbrella?” A man, probably in his mid-twenties, asked the couple from under and awning. “It’s only seven-hundred PokéYen until you leave the beach.” He offered with a grin.

“Sure thing.” Ash nodded to him as he pulled out his wallet and handed the cash to the man. There were multiple people working at this rental shop. Men and women alike, all dressed for the beach as they worked.

“Thank you, sir.” The guy nodded to Ash as he put the money into the till. “Take any umbrella that you like.” He pointed to the many beach umbrellas that were stuck in the sand while closed.

“This one will do.” Misty picked up a white beach umbrella with black stripes.

“Let’s find a spot.” Ash smiled as he carried the umbrella over his shoulder. Misty was carrying the beach bag again, like at Azure Beach.

Finding a spot clear of other beach goers took some time, but they managed it after some looking. Ash stabbed the end of the umbrella into the sand and popped it open to shade their spot. Misty set out their beach towels and then placed the beach bag between them, next to the umbrella pole. Ash quickly pulled off his t-shirt and was left in just his dark-green swim trunks.

Misty kicked off her flip-flops and pulled her white tank top over her head, revealing a blue bikini top with yellow accents. The new top hugged her breasts and revealed a bit more of her of cleavage than her navy-blue one. She tossed her tank top onto her towel before pulling her jean shorts down her legs and stepping out of them. “Didn’t you get enough yesterday, mister?” Misty laughed as she pulled out a bottle of sunscreen and laid down on her beach towel facedown. “Can you get my back again?”

“I don’t know if there’s such a thing as ‘enough’ of you, Misty.” Ash smirked as he gently ghosted his fingers over her back, cupped her ass for a second, and then trailed down her thighs and legs.

The two Pokémon had happily stretched under the shade of the umbrella and watched over the spot. Pidgeotto aggressively spread her wings to scare off the Wingull that had been gathering nearby. The curious and ever-hungry Water/Flying Types took off quickly at seeing the large raptor.

With their spot secure, Ash and Misty walked along the beach hand-in-hand. They enjoyed the warm sunshine and the laughter of some of the children they passed by. The young kids happily playing, making sand castles, or playing with their parents’ Pokémon. It was as they were walking along that they saw some rather risqué swimsuits.

“Oh wow…” Misty looked at the almost strings that covered a rather curvy woman on the beach. Her swimsuit wasn’t indecent, but it was skimpy to say the least. “Right?” Ash chuckled as he saw something in the distance. “Wanna ride a Lapras?”

“Yes!” Misty beamed as she sped up. Ash laughed as Misty almost pulled him towards the spot.

“Lapras rides, only three-hundred PokéYen per lap!” A man called out to the beach. Behind him a small pod of Lapras were in the ocean water making soft coos and sounds. A woman in a one-piece swimsuit was helping some smaller children onto the back of one of the large Water/Ice Type Pokémon.

“We’ll take a lap.” Misty smiled at the man.

“Three-hundred PokéYen, please.” The man smiled back and accepted the money that Ash pulled from the pocket of his swim trunks. “Have fun, you two.”

“They’re so cute!” Misty was beaming as she approached the large Pokémon.

“Ooorrrroooo?” The Lapras that the woman motioned them over to cooed at its newest passengers. Misty confidently stepped onto the strong shell on Lapras’ back and couldn’t help but gently hug the Pokémon’s long neck.

Ash put his arm around Misty’s waist and she leaned against him happily. “Imagine just traveling around on the back of a Lapras…you could go to islands whenever you wanted. You could even go out to the ocean and fish.”

“This is a really comfortable ride.” Ash agreed and Lapras cooed at the compliment as it swam along.

“It’s amazing that they’ve made such a large comeback in the last thirty years.” Misty mentioned as they rode along, enjoying the open ocean as Lapras made a wide circle.

The Lapras species had been endangered just thirty years prior. Over-capturing of the Pokémon themselves had lowered natural populations. Combined that with the fact that their main food sources were being fished by humans and the species had been pushed to the brink after several years. Through strong conservation efforts and some law changes put in place to protect Lapras, the species had started to recover. It was in the last five years that Lapras had finally been removed from the ‘Threatened’ list of species. The Water/Ice Types once more swam the seas and oceans of the world in their original populations. Catching them was now legal, but there was still a limit to how many could be caught.

“Hi!” A young girl in an inner tube waved to them from not too far away.

“Hey!” Misty and Ash waved back with smiles.

The last portion of the ride took them closer to the beach again. It was obviously to drum up more business by showing people riding the Transport Pokémon. The way some of the little kids’ eyes lit up when they saw Ash and Misty riding on the back of the Lapras clearly meant it was working. Lapras brought them back to the start point and Misty hugged the large Pokémon once more.

“Thanks for the ride, Lapras!” Misty cooed at the Water/Ice Type.

“Ooooo!” Lapras cooed back to her.

“It was fun.” Ash petted the Pokémon gently and got more coos of appreciation.

With a spring in her step, Misty took Ash’s hand again and the couple resumed their walk along the large beach. They looped around, taking in the sights and options, before heading back to their spot. Pidgeotto and Bibarel were still watching the spot, both enjoying some treats they’d found in the beach bag. Ash and Misty playfully rolled their eyes at the two for sneaking the treats early. Neither Pokémon looked repentant though, Pidgeotto even looked a bit smug. Misty collected some money from her pocketbook to buy things with and the Pokémon were left with their treats.

“Want to get something to snack on?” Ash asked with a smug grin.

“Alright.” Misty had her own grin to match her boyfriend’s.

Walking along the row of various stands, stalls, and restaurants selling food of multiple types, the couple debated on what sounded good. It all smelled great, there was a huge variety and the prices weren’t bad either. As they walked the length of the beach again, the couple found the antics of the local Wingull population amusing. The Water/Flying Types would happily snatch up any food that fell on the sand. They were attentive to, dozens of the mostly white sea birds could be seen perched around the food stalls just waiting. Some people were even tossing bits of food to the birds!

“Fish Tacos! Freshly made!” One vendor called out as she placed some of the stuffed tacos into the hands of customers.

“Octillery Takoyaki! Eight for seven-hundred-fifty PokéYen!” A large man offered as he was making the food in view of customers.

“Chargrilled Cloyster, only six-hundred PokéYen! Hot off the grill!” A woman called out from a different stand slightly further down.

“Spicy Corphish!” A different place called out. “Goes great with a cold beer!”

“Tauros Burgers! Fresh fries, nice and crispy!” A small restaurant had two cute teens calling out to the beach goers.

“Shaved Ice! Any flavor you’d like! Just three-hundred PokéYen!” A young man called out while a slightly older lady was making the sweet treats.

“Steamed Kingler! With house butter sauce! Get a combo for only one-thousand PokéYen!” A restaurant had a handsome young man calling out. He seemed to be fairly successful if the number of customers in the shop was any indication.

“Tropius Fruit Parfait!” A lady in a black bikini smiled at beach goers. “Sweet and cold! Try one for only five-hundred PokéYen!” Behind the woman an actual Tropius fanned out it leaves and made a happy sound.

“Fresh Grilled Spearow Kebabs! With sea salt, garlic, herbs, or teriyaki!” A man with a large grill was cooking up multiple kebabs while what appeared to be his son operated the till.

“Even if we split it, I don’t think we can try everything.” Ash chuckled at having so many options.

“No kidding.” Misty laughed at the idea. “Hmm, what sounds the best?”

“Let’s get a little from a couple places and split it.” Ash suggested after a moment to think. “We can’t try everything, but we can try a few things we haven’t had.”

“Deal.” Misty pecked his cheek. “I’ll grab some of those Spearow Kebabs and those Tropius Fruit Parfaits look good.”

“Then I’ll grab some of that Spicy Corphish and some fries from the burger place.” Ash decided and then added one more thing. “I’ll grab us some cold soda too.”

“Thanks Ash.” Misty smiled at him before they separated.

It didn’t take too long to get their food and find a table to sit at in the shade. The food was good as they shared the different things they’d bought. The Teriyaki Spearow Kebabs were excellent, and the Spicy Corphish left a pleasant tingle on the tongue for a bit. The fries were quickly scarfed down with the sodas and then the parfaits were enjoyed to finish it off.

“That was good.” Ash sighed happily as he patted his stomach.

“Mhmm…” Misty smiled as she relaxed back in her chair.

As the couple was walking back towards their spot, they were approached by a slightly older teen. The guy was shirtless, just wearing swim trunks, flip flops, and a bucket hat. He was tanned and had a small stack of flyers in his hand. The two stopped as the teen got their attention.

“Yo, we’re having a huge bonfire party tonight on the beach. The teen smiled at the couple. “If you want to come, feel free.” He held out one of the flyers to them and Misty took it. It was the information on the location and when the party began. It also mentioned that it was a Trainer get together and that alcohol would be provided.

“We might.” The couple chorused before looking at each other with smiles.

“It’d be another way to celebrate your new Badge, Ash.” Misty mentioned, even though she knew their celebrating from last night was what Ash enjoyed the most.

“You beat Surge?” The other teen blinked. “Hell yeah, man!” He fist-bumped Ash. “It takes real skill not to get your shit kicked in by the Lieutenant!”

“It was a hard battle.” Ash nodded to the other guy. “I can see why Surge upped his Badge requirement.”

“No kidding, anyway, I’m Vito and I hope to see you at the party.” Vito grinned before heading off. Ash and misty watched him walk off until he spotted some cute teenage girls in a group and approached them.

“What do you think?” Ash looked at the flyer.

“We can if you want.” Misty smiled at her boyfriend. “We haven’t been to this kind of party since Pewter City.”

“Why not then.” Ash grinned at the paper as they headed back towards their spot.

“Wow…that’s a lot of people.” Ash blinked as they walked towards the large bonfire they could see from a distance.

“Music, alcohol, and good times will draw in people.” Misty laughed as they crossed the sands.

“Hey, you two made it!” Vito noticed Ash and Misty approaching and moved through the crowd to meet them. “If you want to say ‘Hi’ to the ones that organized this party, follow me.” Ash and Misty easily followed after Vito and the older teen stopped in front of some older Trainers. “Yo, Rossi, Mika, we got more partiers! This is the guy that beat Surge.”

“Is that right?” Rossi was a young man, probably twenty at most, with brunette hair down to his shoulders. He worse a shirt with a flame pattern on it and long black shorts that stopped at his knees.

“That’s actually impressive.” Mika praised Ash with a grin. She was about the same age as Rossi and had long green hair down her back and was wearing a light-green midriff-bearing tank top and black bikini bottoms.

“Welcome to the party!’ Rossi welcomed Misty and Ash with a wide smile. “Eat, drink, dance, get wasted, whatever!” He laughed along with Mika. “Don’t be surprised if it starts getting a little ‘adult’ the later it gets.”

“Thanks for having us.” Ash smiled back at the obviously carefree guy.
