Chapter 34 – Vermillion City and Grandpa

I see it, Vermillion City!” Misty announced with a cheer as they rode their Gogoats down Route Six. The large Port City had come into sight after about half a day of riding.

“So that’s Vermillion City.” Ash hummed appreciatively as the smell of the sea had been getting stronger for the last while. “It’s huge too.”

The couple had left Saffron right after breakfast this morning. They’d rode out onto Route Six and spent the day travelling and battling the Trainers on the Route. It had been good practice for both the younger Pokémon and their stronger Team members. Route Six was also heavily travelled and that brought Trainers of all sorts of Levels out to challenge. Even their Gogoats had gotten battles in today!

“Let’s race!” Misty decided with a competitive smirk thrown Ash’s way, her sea-green eyes bright with challenge and affection.

“You’re on!” Ash was happy to compete against his girlfriend as both of the Gogoat brothers came to a stomp side by side.

“GO!” Ash and Misty called out at the same time.

“Goat!” The Gogoat brothers bleated as they bolted forward in a sprint. Both of the Ride Pokémon quickly reached their top speed with a rider. The scenery leading up to Vermillion City was a blur as Misty and Ash raced towards the edge of the Port town.

“You can do it, Gogoat!” Ash cheered on his Pokémon as they raced forward. There was a slight green glow emanating from his hands that was absorbed by the Grass Type.

“We’re gonna win this, right Gogoat?” Misty laughed as her hands glowed green too and the light was absorbed by her Ride Pokémon.

As the couple closed in on the city at speed, their race was interrupted by an air-shaking roar! Both of the Gogoat brothers darted apart, turning their speed away from the source of the roar out of instinct. As they both slowed down and turned to face the potential threat to themselves or their Trainers, horns brandished as weapons, they saw the source of the noise.

“Arc!” A large Arcanine barked at the travelers with a growl. The majestic Fire Type locked its gaze on the two Humans and two Pokémon unblinking. The white ruff of fur was bristled out as the canine Pokémon’s hackles were raised.

“Just what do you two think you’re doing?” A female voice questioned the duo of Trainers. “You can’t just rush into Vermillion City like that!” The one speaking appeared from behind the large Arcanine and revealed herself to be an Officer Jenny.

“Oh…sorry, Officer.” Ash apologized and bowed his head slightly to the police officer.

“We didn’t mean to cause any trouble.” Misty also bowed her head in apology.

“Vermillion is a Port City, so we have to keep security a bit tighter around here.” Jenny relaxed seeing it was just a pair of teens. “When two Ride Pokémon come blitzing towards the city, we have to suspect that they’re up to something.” She patted her Arcanine on the side and the Fire Type stopped growling and sat down. “I’ll need to see your IDs, please.”

“Sure thing,” Ash pulled out his Pokédex and brought up his ID on the screen before handing it to the woman.

“I have it, right here.” Misty reached into the pack on the back of her seat slowly before pulling out her pocketbook. She opened it to reveal her ID and handed it over.

“Ash Ketchum and Misty Waterflower…” Jenny read off their names before comparing their pictures with the IDs. She pulled out a small device and scanned the barcode on the bottom of Misty’s ID. The device beeped and the woman looked at the small screen on the back. “You check out, no reports of being stolen, and no priors or warrants out for you.” She handed back the IDs and moved aside. The large Arcanine stood up and padded over to Jenny’s side at a motion from its Trainer. “Welcome to Vermillion City, you two stay out of trouble.”

“Yes, ma’am.” Ash and Misty chorused as they urged their Gogoats forward and into the city proper.

It didn’t take long to find the nearest Pokémon Center. It was just down the street from the archway leading into the city. The couple dismounted their Ride Pokémon and recalled them back into their Pokéballs after praising them for their hard work. Once they were inside, the two quickly headed for the front desk. Their Pokémon had battled a good amount during the trip and could use some healing and rest.

“Welcome to North Vermillion Pokémon Center, do your Pokémon need treatment?” The Nurse Joy that headed the Center greeted the two with a warm smile.

“Yes ma’am, thank you.” Misty placed her Pokéballs into the provided tray.

“Thank you,” Ash smiled at the pinkette woman as he filled his own tray with his six Pokéballs.

“You’re Pokémon will be treated shortly.” Nurse Joy gave them a short bow before handing both trays off to a Chansey that took them into the back. “Is there anything else I can help you with today?”

“I believe there is a Badge Restriction on the Vermillion Gym, but is it two or three Badges?” Ash questioned the Nurse curiously. He knew it had been changed not too long ago, but he didn’t know what the new requirement was.

“Lt. Surge has raised the required Badges to challenge the Vermillion Gym to three after a series of lackluster battles, I’m afraid.” Nurse Joy gave a half-smile. “His decision does save both of the Pokémon Centers in the city some work though. Even obeying the Level Challenge System, the Lieutenant is still a very power intensive Trainer. Many of the first time challengers of his Gym have to rush to one of the Pokémon Centers for treatment after losing.”

“Thank you, Nurse Joy.” Ash nodded to the woman.

“Not a problem; let me know if you need anything else.” Nurse Joy waved to the teens.

“I guess the old one Badge requirement wasn’t cutting it for him anymore.” Misty mused as they went to the Trainer’s Lounge to wait for their Pokémon to be taken care of.

“Apparently not,” Ash shrugged as they stopped at a vending machine to buy soda. “Lucky that I have four Badges, huh?”

“Luck you.” Misty chuckled as they took their cans towards a free couch in the lounge and sat down. The two teens opened their cans of soda and took sips of the carbonated beverages for a few seconds.

“Should we take a Job while we’re in the city?” Ash motioned to the board on the wall with various Jobs posted on it.

“We could, it never hurts to have extra money while travelling.” Misty noted before taking another sip of her drink. “I’m not sure what kind of work they’d have here though. You can’t even go into the shipping area of the Vermillion Bay. So only the tourist beaches would give you access to the sea if someone wanted a specific Water Type Pokémon fished up or something.”

“I see…” Ash mused while looking at the board across the lounge from them. “I know Vermillion Gym is Electric Types, so I should also come up with the Team I’m going to challenge Lt. Surge with.”

“Phanpy is a Ground Type, but any Gym Leader worth the Title will have counters to their specialties weakness.” Misty hummed thoughtfully. “Bulbasaur is new, so he might not be ready for Gym Level battles, even though Grass is resistant to Electric Type moves. Gogoat might be a good option though.”

“That is something to think about,” Ash agreed as he sipped his soda. “Maybe Pikachu too? He can’t be paralyzed and Electric Types resist Electric moves.”

“Sorry to eavesdrop,” A slightly older male Trainer spoke up from behind them. The food and drink he was carrying made it clear he was heading for one of the tables along the wall before he’d stopped. “But I’d rethink using an unevolved Pokémon against Lt. Surge.”

“Why’s that?” Misty cocked her head slightly.

“Lt. Surge is all about power, unevolved Pokémon usually can’t compete against his Pokémon. He’s got a whole group of Raichu of various levels for example, all of them trained to maximize the power they receive by evolving. Sending a Pikachu up against one of those wouldn’t end well, you know?” The guy gave a half-shrug. “Lt. Surge also seems to think the lack of challenge he received prior to upping the Badge requirement was because his challengers kept bringing in unevolved Pokémon that didn’t have enough training.”

“I see, thanks for the info.” Ash nodded to the older Trainer.

“No problem, sorry for interrupting your conversation.” The guy apologized before heading over towards one of the tables in the Trainer’s Lounge.

“That could present a problem,” Ash grimaced as he thought about what he’d just learned. “I could probably buy a Thunderstone, but I’m not sure Pikachu is ready to evolve yet. We’ve been putting a lot of work into his Speed too.”

“It’s not like Raichu are inherently slower than Pikachu either, especially not if they’re trained properly.” Misty remarked after another sip of her drink. “At the moment, Gogoat would be a good choice. Phanpy too, maybe, if he trained hard enough to evolve especially. Pikachu might work too, that or maybe Teddiursa?”

“Normal Types are only weak to Fighting Types…” Ash pondered on the idea. “If he evolves he’ll have the Guts Ability and status conditions would only raise his already high Attack power.”

“Ash Ketchum and Misty Waterflower, your Pokémon are healed.” Nurse Joy’s voice came over the PA System.

“That didn’t take too long.” Misty smiled as they both stood up from the couch. The couple tossed their cans into the recycling bin as they left the lounge area and headed back towards the front desk.

“Your Pokémon are in perfect health,” Nurse Joy smiled at both teens as they collected their Pokéballs. “We hope to be of service again.”

“Thank you,” Ash and Misty returned her smile as they headed out of the Pokémon Center.

“This way, Ash.” Misty took Ash’s hand in hers and began to lead him down the road from the Pokémon Center and towards the beach. Ash followed along, knowing where Misty wanted to take him already.

The two walked along the road, turned just before they got to the beach, and then continued uphill slightly on a road that ran parallel to the coast. After that road the two headed off on a smaller side road for several minutes until they came to a gravel road at the end. They walked through a bit of woodland for a while and when they emerged they were on top of a hill overlooking a cove.

“See that?” Misty pointed to a cottage that was built back from the beach sand and surrounded by grass and flowers. It was two stories, but didn’t have a large footprint. It was a quaint and cozy house for a couple or small family. Almost picturesque for a beachside cottage, Ash could certainly see this scenery used for a postcard. “That’s my Grandpa’s cottage.”

“It looks cozy,” Ash smiled as they started down the hill hand in hand. “I can see why you enjoyed coming here when you were little.”

“Right?” Misty smiled beautifully at him.

As they got closer, walking along the gravel road, Misty and Ash spotted movement near the cottage. When they were close enough they could tell it was a man. Misty’s grin became a smile when she could tell for certain whom it was. Ash felt joy flare up in Misty’s Aura and squeezed her hand gently.

“Grandpa!” Misty started running towards the man with a laugh. Ash chuckled as he jogged after her.

“Hmm?” The old man looked up at the call. His dark-blue eyes widened at seeing the sight of his youngest granddaughter running towards him. With a bright smile on his wrinkled face he opened his arms wide. “Misty! How’s my grandbaby doing?!” The two met in a hug and Misty was spun around once before being set back on her feet. “Let me get a good look at you!” He held her at arms-length before speaking again. “Prettier every time I see you, just like your grandmother!”

“Grandpa!” Misty giggled at him. “You say that every time.”

“It’s true every time too.” He insisted with a laugh. “Now…who is this young man you’ve brought with you?” His eyes gazed at Ash, standing a short distance away.

“Grandpa, this is Ash Ketchum, he’s my boyfriend.” Misty introduced with a warm smile.

“Boyfriend?!” The old man sputtered out. “A young lad thinks he’s good enough for one of my grandbabies?!” Ash raised an eyebrow for a second before the retired Gym Leader burst into laughter. “Pleased to meet you, young man, they call me Finn!” He held his hand out and Ash shook it firmly.

“Ash Ketchum, nice to meet you, sir.” Ash smiled to Misty’s grandfather.

“Ketchum? Any relation to the old Champion from the generation before mine?” Finn asked with one of his white eyebrows raised. “He was quite the Trainer back in my heyday.”

“That was my great-grandfather, yes.” Ash nodded to the old man. He took a moment to really take in Finn now that he had a moment.

Finn had a bald head, but a thick, white beard. His face had some wrinkles, but nowhere near the amount one would expect of a man over sixty years old to have. His Aura was helping him age gracefully and live a bit longer. Dark-blue eyes that were sharp with attention looked back at Ash. He wore a simple outfit consisting of white cargo shorts, a beige t-shirt, a blue donza over the t-shirt, and simple sandals on his feet.

“I see you’re admiring my traditional fisherman’s coat.” Finn joked as he ran his hand over the blue fabric. “I can get you one if you’d like.”

“I’m not a very good fisherman, you can ask Misty,” Ash chuckled and Misty giggled at him. “I don’t think I’d be able to earn the right to wear a traditional donza like that one.”

“Not very lucky with the fish, eh?” Finn chortled as he motioned for the two of them to follow him inside. “I must say though, this is a pleasant surprise! Come in, come in, we’ll have lunch.”

“We’ll help, Grandpa,” Misty offered as they entered the cozy, seaside cottage. “What’re we having?”

“It must’ve been fate,” Finn smiled at his granddaughter as he went to the kitchen. “I just caught this one yesterday and was planning to preserve what I couldn’t eat.” He opened a large chest freezer that was against the kitchen wall and pulled out Kingler claws and legs. The shell was still intact, but the limbs had already been mostly prepared. “We’ll boil it up, make some butter sauce, maybe some rice to go with it, and fill our bellies!”

“Wow, that one must’ve been huge.” Ash commented on the size of the claws and legs.

“Oh he put up quite the fight.” Finn chuckled as he pointed to a pantry. “Grab the large pot in the pantry, Ash. We’ll need it to boil these up! Misty, grab the salt, butter, and a few of the lemons from the hanging basket, please.”

“Sure thing.” Ash agreed as he opened the pantry and found a large pot, almost a small tub really, sitting on the floor below the bottom shelf. Without strain, thanks to the training his father had put him through. He hefted the large pot and followed Finn outside.

“I’ve got them all, Grandpa.” Misty announced after filling her arms with the ingredients he’d asked for.

The three of them headed outside together and started preparing to cook. Finn started a good sized fire with his Aura, displaying his skill with a grin. Ash placed the large pot over the flames and Finn gathered water together slowly. Misty watched her grandfather use his Aura with the same ease she remembered from her time as a child. He hadn’t lost even a bit of his skill. The pot was filled with water and set to boil as Misty and Finn started preparing the legs and claws. Misty was very happy as she cooked with her grandpa again.

“Kee kee koo,” Ash blinked at the noise, familiar with it from growing up around Pallet Town’s beach. He looked over and spotted a Krabby looking at him from the sand near the tide.

“A Krabby,” Ash stated the obvious of the red-shelled River Crab Pokémon. “Not very big though…you must be just big enough to leave the rivers.”

“Koo kee,” Krabby retorted while scuttling across the sands.

“Are you looking to catch that one, Ash?” Finn questioned from a distance.

“I wouldn’t mind another Water Type.” Ash admitted as he looked the Krabby over. “I only have Poliwhirl at the moment.”

“Go ahead then, he looks like a scrapper!” Finn chuckled as he pulled over a beach chair and sat down.

“Alright then,” Ash grinned as he picked a Pokéball off his belt. “Teddiursa, you’re up!” He tossed the Pokéball and the Little Bear Pokémon emerged in a white light.

“Sa!” Teddiursa cried out as he stared down the Water Type.

“Kee!” Krabby clicked his pincers together.

“Your boyfriend looks to have the makings of a good Trainer, Misty.” Finn commented to his granddaughter.

“Ash is good and he’ll only get better.” Misty smiled from beside her grandfather.

“Teddiursa use Bulk Up and Sweet Scent!” Ash instructed to start off the battle.

“Ursa!” Teddiursa flexed and a red glow covered his body, boosting both Attack and Defense one stage. With a wave of the bear’s paws a pink cloud with a sweet aroma wafted over the Water Type.

“Koo kee…” Krabby’s eyes drooped slightly from the Sweet Scent as its evasion dropped. The crab still opened one of its claws and fired a stream of bubbles at Teddiursa with force.

“Dodge and get in close with Feint Attack!” Ash called out and Teddiursa dashed to the side to avoid the attack. In a matter of moments, the little bear was closing in on Krabby.

“Koo!” Krabby’s left pincer glowed white as it lashed out with a Vice Grip attack. Teddiursa almost seemed to vanish as he dodged around the claw and struck the crab with the Dark Type move.

“Hit Krabby with Slash!” Ash directed and Teddiursa’s claws glowed white as they lengthened. With two vicious swipes Krabby was knocked backwards into the sand.

“Oh ho?” Finn noted the strength behind the blow but Krabby still got back up. “Shell Armor, perhaps?”

“Kee!” Krabby blasted another stream of bubbles at Teddiursa. This time the Bubblebeam landed and Teddiursa stumbled backwards a bit.

“It really is a fighter.” Misty remarked, once again her grandfather proved to have an eye for Water Types.

“The Kingler Line has a much higher Attack than Special Attack,” Ash remembered from his studies. “Pivot and Slash again!”

“Teddi!” Teddiursa pivoted on his right foot and got away from the continued Bubblebeam. His claws glowed white as they lengthened again and lashed out at the Krabby. The Water Type was sent reeling this time, crashing into the sand with a thud.

“Great job, now, go Pokéball!” Ash tossed a standard Pokéball at the downed Krabby. The ball tapped the Water Type before drawing it in as a beam of red energy. The Pokéball rocked back and forth for a few moments before letting off the sound of a successful capture. It instantly shrank down and locked itself, the button remaining red.

“Nice job, Ash.” Finn clapped for the teen as the amber-eyed boy went to fetch the Pokéball.

“That was great!” Misty beamed at her boyfriend. She couldn’t wait to help Ash work with Krabby. The crustacean Pokémon evolved fairly easily when trained and fed well, so Ash should have a Kingler in short order.

“Now, let’s see what we have here.” Ash pulled out his Pokédex and held the locked Pokéball up to the scanner.

“Krabby, the River Crab Pokémon, they live in sandy burrows dug on beaches. If one of their claws breaks off in battle, it regrows quickly. If a claw is lost, this Pokémon has a hard time walking sideways until it grows back. This Krabby is Male, Type Water; known moves are Vice Grip, Leer, Harden, and Bubblebeam.” The Pokedex’s robotic voice listed off Krabby’s information.

“What about Ability?” Ash switched over to Ability Identifier Mode.

“My money is on Shell Armor.” Finn spoke up with a knowing grin.

“This Krabby’s Ability is Shell Armor. This Ability prevents Critical Hits in battle.” The Pokedex informed and Finn snickered at being right.

“Grandpa’s eye never lies.” Misty grinned at the old man.

“Darn right!” Finn laughed as he stood up from his beach chair. “Your Teddiursa is close to evolving, that shaggier coat and the Slash attack are good indicators.”

“I was thinking that might be the case too!” Ash smiled at his Normal Type. “You’re going to evolve soon, Teddiursa!”

“Ursa!” Teddiursa raised both arms into the air with a happy growl.

“We should check on our Kingler legs! The Wingull are already gathering.” Finn noted as there had been a noticeable increase in the amount of the sea birds. The Water/Flying Types were perched around the beach at safe distances. “Little gluttons want the scraps!” The old man chuckled as they headed back towards the fire and the boiling pot.

“Sa?” Teddiursa sniffed the area and then pointed to his mouth while staring up at Ash.

“Here you go, little guy, grow up big and strong.” Finn tossed a small leg to the Little Bear Pokémon with a grin.

“Teddi!” Teddiursa cheered as he sat nearby and started cracking through the shell with his fangs. The growing Pokémon was making quick work of scarfing down the Kingler leg, shell and all.

“We should feed everyone,” Misty nodded as she took her Pokéballs out and released her Team.

“You’re right,” Ash released the rest of his Team and soon the lively cheers of all twelve Pokémon rang out.

“It hasn’t been this lively around the cottage in a while!” Finn was smiling happily as he took in the Pokémon of his granddaughter and her boyfriend. “I see some new captures, Misty. Even a Spheal! You don’t see those except in the summer around the Seafoam Islands.”

“I won him at the Water City Competition, Grandpa.” Misty informed as she picked up the Water/Ice Type and showed him to the old man.

“Well aren’t you a cute one?” Finn petted the round Pokémon fondly. “I’m sure your sisters also adore this little fella.”

“Yep!” Misty laughed as she hugged Spheal, making the little Pokémon clap his flippers together happily.

After the Pokémon were fed, the three of them sat down to a meal of fresh Kingler legs and rice with dried seaweed flakes. The butter sauce was poured on the meat they freed from the shells. A little spritz of lemon juice from the sliced lemons and each of them took their first bite.

“So good!” Ash cheered, his eyes practically sparkling!

“Mhmm~” Misty chewed her mouthful of crab meat.

“Food always tastes better when you eat with others.” Finn chuckled before taking another bite himself. “I’m breaking out the Sake!” He declared as he jogged back to the cottage and returned with a jug a few moments later. “Have a saucer with your grandpa, Misty!”

“Alright,” Misty smiled even as Finn sat out three saucers on the table.

“You drink too, Ash?” Finn questioned, even though he filled all three saucers anyway.

“Only occasionally, but special occasions like this seem like the perfect time.” Ash accepted the saucer of Sake.

“To family and Pokémon!” Finn raised his saucer.

“To family and Pokémon!” Misty and Ash repeated and the three tapped their saucers together.

“Ahh~ that’s the stuff!” Finn enjoyed the Sake with a grin.

“Smooth,” Ash mentioned after his drink. “That went down really easily.”

“Grandpa and Grandma only liked the good stuff.” Misty sipped her Sake with a smile.

“Your grandma liked the good stuff,” Finn chuckled as his eyes filled with happiness at his memories with his late wife. “I was a rough around the edges delinquent back in my teen years. I’d drink any old swill as long as it was alcohol. My old man must’ve tried to set me straight dozens of times.”

“But grandma did it without even trying, right?” Misty giggled as she finished her saucer.

“That she did.” Finn recalled with a happy smile. “I wanted to be a better person for her. She had my heart in short order and I became a Gym Leader of all things! No one would’ve ever suspected that of the old delinquent that used to skulk around with the other roughnecks.” He chuckled as he refilled his saucer.

“Love is a wonderful thing.” Ash smiled at Misty and the two leaned against each other after sharing a quick kiss.

“Aye, that it is.” Finn refilled their saucers, happy to see the love between his granddaughter and Ash. “I’m surprised, but very happy, to see an Aura Bond between you two.”

“Thank you, grandpa.” Misty gave him a warm look that made her grandpa beam.

“What did I ever do to deserve a woman like your grandma?” Finn sipped his Sake with a fond grin. “She gave me a wonderful child, and then I got you four adorable granddaughters. I’m a lucky old man.”

“Love you too, Grandpa.” Misty leaned over the table to hug him tightly.

“You too, Misty.” Finn returned her hug while Ash smiled at the familial love pouring off the pair.

The rest of lunch was a lively affair as they took turns tossing scraps into the air and watching the Wingull swoop to snatch them up. It was no surprise that Finn invited them to stay for the night. The three chatted through the afternoon, Ash and Finn getting to know each other better. Dinner was warm and cozy in the kitchen of the cottage. Finn chuckled when Misty and Ash shared the guest room without a word spoken between them. He did get a laugh when he mentioned no ‘hanky panky’ and watched as both teens blushed. It was good to be a grandpa sometimes!

Enjoy chapter, love the family moment. Getting excited for Teddiursa to the evolve, that little adorable bear deserves it! Can't wait for the next chapter!

Kairomaru

Yeah, warm family moments are great! Glad you enjoyed it! The hungry little bear will get there in time!

Tristan McKenzie O'Meara

Mega adorable. Ash got his Krab, met Misty's granddad, learned Lt. Surge is still a prick, all around a good chapter.

Kairomaru

Happy you enjoyed it, Tristan! Yep, more warm and fuzzies all around! We need more of those, these days!

dudeitschill

That was a cute chapter I was half expecting Misty’s Grandpa to demand a battle with ash to prove his worth but having the krabby show up worked just as well for sure curious to see what you will do with the whole do or don’t evolve pikachu thing

Kairomaru

Glad you liked it! Things are definitely going to change between Canon Vermillion Gym battle and this one, look forward to it!

DeadEyedKush

Thanks for the another great chapter and can't wait to see what you do with Ash's shiny eevee

Kairomaru

Glad you enjoyed it! There are many options for Eevee, we'll see which path it chooses.

DeadEyedKush

I didn't know what a shiny eevee looked like so I looked it and the evolutions for it honestly disappointed me the only one I really liked was umbreon but espion looked ok

ChaosKnight

Well, there's no accounting for taste, I guess. I never liked the green, though. Honestly, there's way too many green shinies out there...

ChaosKnight

Finally, Vermillion City! I'm getting excited, about the gym match for one, this Ash is VASTLY different than canon, so it'll either be completely different or his reaction will differ, at least. That, and a certain trainer is bound to appear soon. Don't care how many chapters until then, still excited to see what you'll do with him. XD

Kairomaru

Yep! Things are changing in the AU! Perhaps I'll commit the ultimate Pokemon Heresy and have Pikachu *Gasp* evolve! Ah, yes, we did talk about that, didn't we? I hope to live up to your expectations.

SnorlaxBest

Hey just read up on all this and I love it. It's so diferent from any other story I can find and I really enjoy you writing style and the way you develop the stories. Hope to see more soon.

Kairomaru

Glad you enjoyed it! Changing up the story and making a different take on the Pokemon World was one of the goals for this story.
