Chapter 32 – South to Saffron City

“Alright, we’re heading out!” Misty called out to her sisters with a smile. She and Ash were standing outside the residential area of the Cerulean Gym beside their Gogoats.

“You two be safe,” Daisy smiled as she gave both of them a hug. “Call us when you get to Vermillion City and see Grandpa, alright?”

“Sure thing,” Misty agreed as they broke their hug.

“Come back anytime!” Violet got her hugs in with her little sister and little brother-in-law. At this point Ash and Misty eventually marrying was pretty much guaranteed!

“If you need to rotate your Team just call, okay Misty?” Lily hugged her little sister with a bright smile.

“I will,” Misty smiled back at her older sisters.

“Take care of each other, you two!” Daisy laughed, quickly joined by Lily and Violet.

“Shut!” Misty blushed at the teasing as she put her foot in the stirrup and got in the saddle of her Ride Pokémon.

“We will!” Ash climbed into his own saddle with a chuckle.

“Ash!” Misty’s face went red at her lover playing along with her sisters’ teasing.

“Oh my~” Violet and Lily both cooed at the couple.

“Shut!” Misty snapped at the two of them embarrassed.

“Later, you three.” Ash nodded to the Sensational Sisters as he urged Gogoat forward.

“I’ll call you when we’re at Grandpa’s cottage!” Misty waved back to her sisters as her Gogoat walked beside Ash’s down the road.

“They’re so cute together~” Lily giggled as the sisters entered the Gym again.

“Daisy, Lily, Violet, are one of you free to take on a Challenger?” Brook’s voice came over a small speaker mounted on the wall.

“Already?!” Violet whined at the early hour for a Challenger to show up.

“Yes, Brook, I’ll handle the Challenger this time.” Daisy responded as she held down a button under the speaker to allow her to speak to Brook at the front desk.

“Back to work.” Lily sighed at the regular string of Challengers coming to the Cerulean Gym. “Maybe we should try and increase our Gym Ranking this year?”

“I’m sure Misty would like that.” Violet nodded with a soft smile.

-Cerulean City ~ South Gate-

“Time to head for Saffron City!” Ash cheered as the couple rode under the arch that denoted the city limits.

“This is a pretty heavily travelled Route too, I’m sure we’ll have plenty of opportunities for battles!” Misty grinned and patted the Pokéballs on her hip.

“Sounds like a good plan to me!” Ash shared her grin as they rode along leisurely down Route Five.

For the next few hours the couple rode down Route Five with the radio function of Ash’s PokéGear playing music for them. They were indeed challenged to several battles, mostly by Beginner Level Trainers that had recently started out from Cerulean City, Vermillion City, and Saffron City. It was great training for their younger Pokémon like Spheal, Phanpy, Teddiursa, and both of their Eevees. The two Normal Types had taken to battling fairly well and seemed eager to improve their strength and skills. The amount of Beginner Trainers that stared or gaped after seeing Ash’s Shiny Eevee was amusing though.

“I think it’s about time for lunch.” Misty looked up at the sun’s position.

“Yeah, I could eat.” Ash agreed and his stomach rumbled to emphasize the statement.

The couple moved off of Route Five entirely while they looked for a place to set up for lunch. Route Five was truly heavily travelled and that included plenty of vehicles like cars and large trucks. Neither of them wanted a dust cloud blown up by a passing vehicle to end up in their food. Their Gogoat easily moved aside brush as they walked a good distance into the forest.

“I hear water,” Misty perked up as she focused some of her Aura to her ears to try and find out where the sound was coming from. “This way.” She pointed and directed Gogoat to lead. In a short amount of time, through rather thick brush, the duo of Humans and Pokémon emerged into a clearing with a small spring running through it.

“Hey, this is pretty nice.” Ash noted as he looked around the clearing. “It’d be a great place for lunch.”

“Yeah, let’s set up!” Misty agreed as they released their Pokémon for lunch.

A quick application of Ground Type Aura and a sunken pit was made. This would serve as their fire pit. Ash pulled out his cookware while Misty fetched firewood. Their Pokémon happily ran around playing or relaxed in the shade of the trees. Both of their Gogoats drank from the stream as their leaf pelts absorbed sunlight for energy. Misty was quick to return with an armload of dry sticks to use for their fire. The two then decided on what they’d make for the meal.

“I could slice up the Grumpig Pork Chops into cubes and then cook them with some vegetables and noodles for a pork soup.” Ash offered his suggestion to his girlfriend.

“Hmm, I think I have some potato starch still,” Misty started searching in her pack. “We can add it to the soup to thicken it and make it into a nice simple stew.”

“Sounds good,” Ash smiled as Misty found the potato starch and handed it to him. “Can you filter some water from the stream?”

“Sure thing!” Misty nodded as she took his filter tube and the large pot.

Ash took out his small cutting board and set to slicing the pork into rough cubes. Misty took on the task of chopping the vegetables once she’d put the pot of filtered water over the fire to boil. These simple tasks, while normally just a mundane requirement to eat on the road, became enjoyable when they did them together. Ash tossed in a pork bouillon cube for added flavor from his spice set. Once it had dissolved, the pork and vegetables were added and then the potato starch was slowly stirred in until the stew came to the desired thickness.

“Ursa!” Teddiursa had watched the whole food preparation process curiously. The Little Bear Pokémon looked over the scraps of the vegetables and some of the fat that had been trimmed from the Grumpig pork. “Teddi!” The Normal Type pointed towards his wide open mouth.

“You want the scraps, huh buddy?” Ash chuckled at his Pokémon.

“Ur!” Teddiursa nodded happily.

“Alright, alright, you can have them.” Ash motioned towards the scraps and Teddiursa quickly stuffed almost all of them into his mouth. After a bit of chewing, the bear Pokémon grabbed the last few morsels and stuffed them into his mouth too. After his snack, Teddiursa ran off to go play with the rest of the Pokémon.

“His appetite has been growing just as much as he has.” Misty noted with a grin at the retreating Normal Type.

“I’m hoping that’s a good sign that he’d about to evolve.” Ash smiled as he watched Teddiursa play with Misty’s Bibarel. “It’s what Teddiursa wants more than anything, so I’m hoping the increase in size and appetite means he’s close.”

“I’m no expert on the Ursaring Line, but I think Teddiursa’s fire has been getting thicker and shaggier recently too.” Misty mentioned of the bear Pokémon. “Maybe that’s another sign?”

“We can hope.” Ash grinned before kissing her cheek.

“Ash~” Misty giggled before turning her head to capture his lips for a sweet kiss.

As they waited for the stew to cook thoroughly, the couple listened to music from the radio function of their PokéGear and played with their Pokémon. Feeding was easy as always, especially when there were plenty of wild Berries for the Pokémon to enjoy. Their Gogoats were happily grazing on various plants around the clearing. There was an old saying about Goat Pokémon having iron stomachs though, so they could eat almost anything!

“It smells great~” Misty sighed happily when the stew was just about ready.

“Yeah, we did pretty good, I’d say.” Ash chuckled as he stirred the stew with the ladle.

Ash ladled out the stew into two bowls and the couple dug in. The flavor was good and the pork had been made soft by the simmering it had gone through. The thickened stew flavor had seeped into the meat as well. It wasn’t fancy, but it was filling and tasted good. For travelling Trainers, that was what was important.

“Tasty, filling, and simple,” Misty listed off as they finished up the stew. “All the hallmarks of a real Trainer’s meal!”

“You said it.” Ash agreed with a grin as they started washing the bowls, spoons, and the pot together.

Once the fire was put out and all of their gear was packed away again, Pidgeotto flew down from above the treetops and gently landed on Ash’s outstretched arm. The Normal/Flying Type seemed curious as she gestured with her right wing toward the deeper part of the forest. Ash reached out with his Aura and tried to understand Pidgeotto better.

“Something is over in that direction?” Ash felt out from Pidgeotto’s Aura.

“Pidge,” Pidgeotto nodded to Ash. “Otto, ge pid!”

“A building?” Ash blinked at the impression he got from Pidgeotto. “This far away from the Route?”

“Ge!” Pidgeotto chirped in confirmation.

“A building this far into the forest?” Misty also looked perplexed. “What could it be for?”

“You wanna check it out?” Ash questioned his lover.

“We can, we’re not going to make it to Saffron in a single day with how many battles we’ve been in already.” Misty shrugged at the detour.

“Can you lead us to this building, Pidgeotto?” Ash requested of his Bird Pokémon.

“Pidge!” Pidgeotto spread her wings and flew in the direction of the building she’d spotted from the sky. Ash and Misty quickly returned their Pokémon to their Pokéballs and followed after Pidgeotto.

It was quite a walk through the forest with no discernable path. Following Pidgeotto -who regularly landed on tree branches to wait for the Humans to catch up- was the only reason they didn’t lose their way. When they finally came to another clearing, this one much larger than the one they’d found, Ash and Misty blinked at seeing the pond that flowed out into a stream, the log cabin nearby, and of course all of the different Pokémon wandering around.

“Okay…not what I was expecting.” Misty blinked as they took in the area.

“No kidding,” Ash glanced at all of the Pokémon in the large clearing before his eyes locked onto the cabin. “Someone’s coming.”

Indeed someone was, as the door to the log cabin opened and a young woman emerged with a tray with multiple bowls of Pokémon food on it. She had navy-blue hair done up in a braid behind her head and secured with a light-green bow. She had fair skin and blue-eyes, wore red overalls with a dark-pink shirt underneath and orange shoes. She set out the various bowls of food and smiled happily when the Pokémon came over to eat.

“Bulba!” A loud cry was the only warning before two vines lashed out at Ash and Misty.

“GEOTTO!” Pidgeotto smacked the vines away with her wings angrily. She glared at the Bulbasaur that tried to harm her Trainer and friend.

“Oh my, are you alright?” The woman noticed them being attacked and rushed over to ease the angry Bulbasaur. “I’m sorry if he startled you.”

“I wasn’t expecting that,” Ash remarked as he and Misty stepped into the clearing properly.

“Are all of these Pokémon yours?” Misty looked at all of the Pokémon around the area that were either eating from the bowls or watching the two new Humans curiously.

“Oh no, I just take care of them,” The woman shook her head. “My name is Melanie, I’m a Pokémon Caretaker.”

“Caretaker?” Ash wasn’t sure he remembered that profession from school.

“Yes,” Melanie smiled at them. “I’m a Breeder that specializes in caring for injured and sick Wild Pokémon. That’s what this whole area is, a sanctuary for weak and injured Pokémon.”

“That explains all of the Pokémon in one place.” Misty nodded in understanding.

“Yes, they are Wild Pokémon that have been injured or gotten sick. Or they’re weaker Pokémon that have been released by their Trainers. My goal is to care for them until they’re able to return to the wild again.” Melanie explained her profession to the two Trainers.

“You do this all by yourself?” Ash looked amazed that she cared for what was easily over twenty Pokémon alone.

“Oh no, no, I’m part of a rotation of almost a dozen Caretakers.” Melanie laughed lightly. “This is just my week here at the cabin. All of the Pokémon know us, and trust us.”

“Yeah, I was going to say…” Misty chuckled with a smile. “You’d run yourself ragged trying to take care of this many Pokémon all alone.”

“Bulbasaur!” Bulbasaur had apparently reached his limit of being ignored. He growled at Ash and Misty and raised his vines again.

“Bulbasaur, stop that!” Melanie reprimanded the Grass/Poison Type. “I’m sorry for his aggression, but he’s taken on the role of protector of all of the other Pokémon. He’s always driving off anyone not from the sanctuary.”

“I understand,” Ash let his Aura out, but kept it at a low level so that it didn’t become visible. “You just want to protect the other Pokémon, don’t you buddy?”

“Bulba…” Bulbasaur looked at Ash warily as he felt out the Human’s Aura. It was full of warmth, acceptance, and kindness. This one seemed similar to Melanie, if not more competitive.

“Oh…I’ve never seen Bulbasaur calm down like that before, you must have a way with Pokémon.” Melanie praised Ash with a smile.

“I try,” Ash shrugged as he smiled at Bulbasaur. “Oh right, we haven’t introduced ourselves. I’m Ash Ketchum.”

“Misty Waterflower, it’s nice to meet you, Melanie.” Misty introduced herself with a short bow.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you both.” Melanie returned their greeting.

“Would you like some help taking care of the Pokémon Melanie?” Misty offered after sharing her intentions with Ash through their Bond.

“Oh, I couldn’t ask that of you two.” Melanie shook her head with a smile.

“We’re offering though.” Ash smiled amused and Melanie giggled at the couple’s insistence on helping her out before they departed.

“Alright then, I’ll put you both to work for a while.” Melanie acquiesced and led them towards the cabin to gather supplies.

The next few hours were filled with checking up on all of the various Pokémon at the sanctuary. Seeing which Pokémon were ready to leave, which one’s needed more treatment, and which ones were just staying for a while just because. During the work, Melanie told them about her work, the other Caretakers she worked with, and the Pokémon that the sanctuary had taken in over the last two years she’d been working there.

“Honestly I’d love for Bulbasaur to go out and give the world another chance.” Melanie sighed wistfully as they sat on some lawn chairs and watched the Pokémon play in the clearing. “He was released by a Trainer that didn’t have the patience to raise him properly. Bulbasaur is a good Pokémon. He’s strong, brave, and loyal. He took on the role of protector all on his own and has done a wonderful job. But I feel like he’s missing out on his own life out there in the world by staying here for so long.”

“You don’t want Bulbasaur to give up on the world because of his old Trainer, I understand.” Misty gave the young woman a smile.

“Exactly,” Melanie nodded as she looked at Bulbasaur watching over the other Pokémon. “But at this rate I’m not sure that he’ll ever give the rest of the world a second chance.”

“Maybe what he needs is someone to show him that the world outside of here isn’t full of people like his old Trainer?” Ash mused thoughtfully as he looked over Bulbasaur from their chairs.

“Since you two spent so long helping out today, how about your stay for dinner and sleep here in the cabin?” Melanie offered with a gentle smile. “You can head out in the morning refreshed.”

“That’s not a bad idea, if you don’t mind us helping with dinner too.” Misty returned the bluenette’s smile with one of her own.

“I guess I’ll have to accept,” Melanie giggled at the looks on the teens’ faces. “You two are the stubborn type.”

“Let’s get cooking then.” Ash stood from his chair followed by Misty and Melanie.

The trio entered the cabin and headed for the small kitchen. The cabin itself was three rooms total. A small bathroom, with a tub and shower, a bedroom that slept one -or two if the people were close- and the third room contained everything else. Kitchen, dining area, and living room were all one big room combined.

“Now let’s see what we have in the fridge,” Melanie opened the stainless steel appliance and looked at the various things on the shelves. “Mushrooms, cabbage, peppers, broccoli, some Tauros beef, hmm we could stir fry that up, do we have some rice to go with it though?” She thought aloud as she went to check the container that held the rice. “We do, excellent!”

“Just tell us what we need to do, Melanie.” Misty grinned as she and Ash washed their hands.

“I’ll get the wok ready, if you two could slice the vegetables and start steaming the rice?” Melanie instructed while pulling out a good sized wok from the cabinet.

“Sure thing!” Ash agreed as he and Misty set to work.

The wok was oiled by Melanie and then she seasoned the beef. Misty passed her the vegetables while Ash prepped the rice. There were smiles and laughter in the air as the three cooked their dinner together. While this was going on, Bulbasaur watched them work. His red-eyes followed Ash more as the raven-haired teen moved about the kitchen. The one who had such a welcoming Aura and made Bulbasaur feel the dull pain that lingered from his abandonment fade just a bit.

“Bul…” Bulbasaur watched on with a thoughtful look on his face.

“I present Melanie’s Beef Stir Fry over Rice!” Melanie presented the meal with a laugh. “It’s made of seasoned Tauros beef, cabbage, mushrooms, broccoli, onions, zucchini, sesame oil, a little teriyaki sauce, and white rice! I hope you enjoy!” The Caretaker giggled as she set the wok down on the table and started dishing out the food.

“It smells great!” Ash breathed in deeply.

“I bet it tastes better!” Misty declared with a chuckle as they both dug in.

“Meals are always tastier when you share them with others.” Melanie agreed as she took her first bite.

“Oh wow, that is good!” Ash praised as he swallowed his first bite. “The spices on the beef go great with the light teriyaki sauce.”

“The vegetables are perfect too, they’re not burned or mushy, they’re just soft enough to be eaten easily with the rice.” Misty added her own praise for the dinner.

“It’s nothing special,” Melanie waved off with a grin. “You learn stuff like this with a little time and experience.”

The rest of dinner was filled with happy conversation. Misty and Ash told the blue-eyed young woman how they’d met and of their travels together. Melanie described her own travels when she first started out as a Trainer before finding her path in the Breeders’ Association and becoming a Pokémon Caretaker. All the while Bulbasaur watched on and tried to discern the true nature of Ash.

“It’s gotten a bit late,” Melanie noted the time on the wall clock. “I think we should all get showered and hit the hay.”

After some polite arguing of who got to use the bathroom and shower first -Misty and Ash insisting that Melanie go first while the Caretaker wanted them to go first as her guests- Melanie took her shower and prepared for bed as she always did. Misty was next while Ash set up their preferred bedding while travelling. Melanie had blushed lightly when she realized that Ash and Misty slept in the same bed. The kind-hearted young lady hadn’t had a relationship like that before. When Misty emerged from the bathroom, Ash took his turn. The girls chatted and Misty happily encouraged Melanie to pursue romance if she found the right person. A freshly showered Ash emerged from the bathroom with a smile and the trio was quick to go to bed. Melanie in the bedroom as usual while Ash and Misty snuggled up together in their spread out sleeping bag bed in the living room.

“It was a good day.” Ash murmured as he held Misty close.

“It really was,” Misty agreed as she laid her head on his chest. “We’ll head back to Route Five in the morning and continue to Saffron City.”

“Battling any Trainer that challenges us on the way, right?” Ash quietly chuckled.

“Of course,” Misty sounded amused. “When Trainers meet it’s almost always a battle.”

“Goodnight Misty.” Ash kissed the top of her head.

“Goodnight Ash.” Misty leaned up to kiss his neck before laying her head back on his chest.

-Morning-

The day dawned beautifully with clear skies and warm weather. The sounds of Pokémon waking filled the forest. Melanie left her bedroom and smiled softly at seeing Ash and Misty snuggled up together. She quietly headed for the restroom. Ash and Misty woke up not long afterwards, both of them yawning and stretching as they awoke. The two greeted Melanie and took turns in the bathroom before breakfast.

Breakfast was a simple affair of rolled omelets, miso soup, and some fresh Berries. The couple brushed their teeth in the bathroom afterwards before starting to pack up their things. Melanie wished them both well on their journey as they let their Gogoat out of their Pokéballs and secured their packs onto the back of the saddles. It was only a short while after they finished their preparations to leave that something happened.

“Saur.” Bulbasaur approached Ash with a determined look on his reptilian face. “Bulba!”

“What’s up Bulbasaur?” Ash questioned the Grass/Poison Type. He surreptitiously released his Aura and sought to understand Bulbasaur. With the aid of his Aura, what the Pokémon wanted to convey came across quickly. “A Battle?”

“Bul!” Bulbasaur nodded and then one of his vines extended and pointed to the Pokéballs on Ash’s belt. The vine then turned and pointed back at Bulbasaur.

“You want to come with me, but only if I can beat you in a battle?” Ash grinned at the Pokémon with joy radiating through his Aura.

“Bulbasaur!” Bulbasaur cried out as he took a ready, aggressive stance.

“Bulbasaur,” Melanie beamed at the Pokémon. “Are you finally ready to try again?”

“I think he and Ash have similar natures,” Misty smiled softly as Ash pulled a Pokéball from his belt and enlarged it. “They both want to get stronger and see the world. Bulbasaur’s ambition and pride were practically crushed by his abandonment. Ash will do everything in his power to show Bulbasaur the joys of the world.”

“I think so too.” Melanie nodded with small, happy tears in the corner of her eyes.

“Pidgeotto, I choose you!” Ash called as he tossed the Pokéball and Pidgeotto emerged in a bright, white light.

“Pidge!” Pidgeotto cried out as she looked down at the Bulbasaur challenging her Trainer and friend.

“Let’s start off with Gust!” Ash called out and Pidgeotto flapped her wings powerfully to whip up the localized tornado.

“Bulba!” Bulbasaur held his ground for a bit before being blown off his feet and into the air. In mid-air he lashed out with his Vine Whip attack.

“Agility to dodge and then use Heat Wave where Bulbasaur lands!” Ash instructed and Pidgeotto disappeared in a blur of speed just as the two vines lashed through the space it had occupied.

“Pidgeotto!” Pidgeotto reappeared behind Bulbasaur just as the Grass/Poison Type landed. Her wings took on a bright red color as she beat them rapidly. A sweltering gale slammed into Bulbasaur and sent him sprawling.

“Saur!” Bulbasaur cried out at the second super-effective hit he’d taken.

“Quick Attack!” Ash made the next move as Pidgeotto dive-bombed Bulbasaur in a streak of white light.

“Ba!” Bulbasaur was hit before he could retaliate and he crashed into the ground.

“Pokéball go!” Ash threw a standard Pokéball at the downed Starter Pokémon. In a flash of red light, Bulbasaur was pulled into the ball which began to shake. Over and over the Pokéball rocked back and forth. But after a few shakes, the ball clicked and made the sound of a successful capture. It then promptly shrunk down and locked itself.

“He did it,” Melanie smiled even though she was worried about Bulbasaur’s injuries. “His Pidgeotto is rather powerful.”

“You did great, Ash!” Misty congratulated her boyfriend with a bright smile.

“I caught Bulbasaur!” Ash smiled as he picked up the shrunken and locked Pokéball. “You were amazing Pidgeotto!” He praised as he let Pidgeotto land on his arm so her could give her pats and light scratches of appreciation.

“Pidge!” Pidgeotto chirped as she leaned into the petting.

“Get some rest, Pidgeotto. We have a day of travel ahead of us and probably quite a few Trainers to battle too!” Ash held up her Pokéball and returned her in a beam of red light.

“Thank you, Ash, for giving Bulbasaur the second chance he was reluctant to give himself.” Melanie thanked the teen with a gentle smile.

“I didn’t see a Transfer Machine in the cabin. You don’t happen to have one in the bedroom, do you?” Ash questioned the Caretaker.

“I’m afraid we don’t have that kind of device here, Ash.” Melanie shook her head.

“Darn, I was going to switch out one of my Team members so that I could treat Bulbasaur.” Ash grimaced at the idea of leaving Bulbasaur untreated until they got to Saffron City.

“I’m sure Bulbasaur will understand, Ash.” Melanie assured him gently. “He’s a tough Pokémon and will be very happy that the first person he sees when the Pokéball opens is you.”

“I’ll make sure he gets the best Pokémon Center care as soon as we’re in Saffron City.” Ash promised Melanie with a determined look blazing in his eyes.

“Thank you for that, Ash, I appreciate it very much.” Melanie gave him a short bow.

“Well, if we want to get to Saffron, we’d better head out.” Misty looked at the position of the sun to note the time.

“Right,” Ash nodded as they both climbed onto the back of their respective Gogoat. “It was great meeting you Melanie! Watch the Indigo League if you can, Bulbasaur is going to be in it with me this year!”

“I’ll make sure to do that, Ash!” Melanie agreed as she waved at Ash and Misty as they rode back towards Route Five.

Another day in the life of a Pokémon Trainer was ahead and both Ash and Misty would meet it with a smile.

If you want a suggestion on if bulbasaur should evolve or not I think you should wait until may catches her Bulbasaur since it was female That way when she evolves into ivysaur he can decide the evolve as well

Kairomaru

I'm afraid the plans are different, so that won't be possible. I hope you liked the chapter!

ChaosKnight

It's been a while since I had the time to read this, so I had to read about 10 chapters to get here. Reading the rest of your stories after commenting here. Gotta say, your stories are still among the best and more original ones I've ever read, though the reason I comment on this one is because Pokémon will always have a special place in my heart. That, and I'm excited about the fact that Ash and Misty are finally on their way to Vermillion City. I know it's gonna take a while until they actually arrive, but I can't wait for it.

Kairomaru

Thank you, I truly appreciate the praise! This story is my own way of giving back to the World I spent a good amount of my childhood in. Anytime things got rough, I knew I could always head to the Pokemon World to forget about my troubles for a while.
