Chapter 12 – Waking, Treatment, Announcement

‘Where am I?’ Izuku thought as he blearily opened his eyes. The ceiling was white and he was lying on a bed. Blinking the sleepiness away the verdette noticed that his parents were on either side of the bed he was lying in. “…” Izuku tried to speak, but no sound was made and his throat flared with pain. He flinched at the burning in his neck before closing his eyes. He thought back and the details of what happened at the USJ came back to him. ‘I hope everyone is alright.’ Izuku was more concerned with his classmates and teachers than he was about his own condition. After slowly going over everything he could remember of the attack, Izuku focused his Healing Aura Quirk onto his vocal chords. A faint green glow surrounded his neck as the Quirk began to repair the damage he’d done to himself.

“Izuku!” Inko exclaimed as she noticed the slight glow on her son’s throat.

“Welcome back, Izu.” Hisashi smiled brightly at his son.

“Hey…” Izuku’s voice was still a little raspy, but he could talk now. The green glow of Healing Aura got slightly brighter as Izuku increased its output. Healing Aura was limited to mostly soft-tissue damage in the nurse he’d copied it from. When he amplified it with his boosting Quirks then it could do much more drastic healing, like mending bones or restoring torn muscles. Right now he was having it heal the soft-tissue of his vocal chords. Once he was sure he had enough energy, then he’d amplify it and finish his healing all at once.

“We were so worried, Izuku.” Inko already had tears forming in the corners of her eyes as she gently hugged her son.

“I went a bit overboard.” Izuku admitted without any hesitance. He’d do it again too. No matter how many times he was put in a situation like that, he’d always make the same choice. He would protect and save everyone he could to the absolute limits of his abilities, and then he’d push beyond that to ensure everyone was safe. That’s what a Hero does!

“I’ll say,” Hisashi gave a small chuckle. “But you did great Izuku. You really saved your classmates and teachers. We’re so proud of you son.”

“Thanks Dad.” Izuku smiled as warmth burst into his chest at his parents telling him how proud they were of his actions.

Izuku felt fairly normal after checking himself over. With a deep breath his body was engulfed in the green glow of Healing Aura as he healed any remaining damage to himself. Inko and Hisashi both smiled as they watched their son literally heal and get better right before their eyes. Izuku was actually surprised how little damage there was to heal. It seemed his worst damage had been the loss of energy and the neurological strain he’d put himself through with his Total Sensory Deprivation combo. The time he’d spent sleeping had taken care of the strain on his brain and his body wasn’t in very bad shape at all.

“How is young Izuku?” Recovery Girl asked after knocking on the door and letting herself in. Seeing the verdette teen up and awake brought a smile to the elderly Hero’s face. “Ah, it’s good to see you awake, young man.”

“I seem to be alright, Recovery Girl.” Izuku bowed slightly to the Hero. “I couldn’t find much to heal when I used Healing Aura on myself.”

“As if I’d let you out of my care from a self-diagnosis.” Recovery Girl chuckled as she moved to the bed and began looking Izuku over.

Several minutes later and even Recovery Girl was satisfied that Izuku was back to normal. The teen was allowed to go into the attached bathroom to change into normal clothing so that he could enjoy the rest of the day. Izuku had been rather shocked to learn that he’d been asleep for close to thirty-six hours. Tomorrow was Monday and classes were resuming. It did mean that he could see his classmates sooner though and know that they were all okay. Seeing it with his own eyes would solidify what Recovery Girl had told him about them all being fine.

“Can I see, Aizawa?” Izuku asked his Healing Teacher. Recovery gave him a gentle smile even as she shook her head. The teen was clearly planning to finish the healing that Recovery Girl had started with her Quirk. He was a kind soul with a big heart, the elderly Hero mused to herself as she led him to where Aizawa was resting.

‘He’ll make a splendid Hero.’ Recovery Girl thought as they walked. The young man always wanted to help and thought of others before himself. He had a bright future ahead of him as a Pro.

“Here he is.” Recovery Girl opened the door to Aizawa’s recovery room. The man was heavily bandaged, looking much like a mummy. “I’ve been able to get him well on the way, but because of how my Quirk works I’ve had to treat him slowly as to not exhaust his stamina. He’ll be in those bandages for a while at this rate.”

“I think I can take care of him.” Izuku looked over the injuries on Recovery Girl’s report. The Pro Hero helped him make sense of a few terms he didn’t understand and pointed out the sleeping Aizawa’s most damaged areas.

“I won’t be letting you exhaust yourself or cause any undue strain on your body, young man.” Recovery Girl told Izuku flat out. “I’ll let you prioritize certain areas, but the rest can be healed over time.”

“Yes ma’am.” Izuku agreed as his hands glowed with Healing Aura. He carefully placed his glowing hands on Aizawa’s bandaged right arm. The green glow spread to cover everything from shoulder to fingertips under Izuku’s guidance. He felt the slight changes as his Quirk went to work on his teacher. Bones that had been set and partially healed by Recovery Girl began to repair themselves. The cracks in the Underground Hero’s bones fusing and filling in the micro-fractures as the healing processes were incredibly accelerated. Izuku was taking it easier though. He’d only compiled ‘Healing Aura’, ‘Efficiency’, and ‘Amplification’ to give him the ability to heal Aizawa’s bones and torn muscles. He’d do as Recovery Girl had said and not risk his own energy and stamina since he’d just awoken after a day and a half. Izuku pulled back after healing Aizawa’s right arm and shoulder.

“Hmm, very good, his bones look fine and the muscle tears have healed correctly.” Recovery Girl gave Izuku a warm smile as she looked over the various images on the screen for the multi-phase medical scanner she was using on Aizawa. “Do you want to do the other arm next?”

“I’d prefer to heal his orbital fracture completely.” Izuku admitted as he looked at the bandaged face of his teacher. “Aizawa is right-handed so I chose to start there so he can mostly take care of himself when he wakes up.” Recovery Girl couldn’t stop the smile on her face from growing. Izuku was already learning which injuries to prioritize in certain patients for the benefit of their recovery. It was a very important lesson for those with Healing Quirks to learn, especially if they were healing Pro Heroes in the field.

“Very well, go slowly though, the orbital floor was badly damaged and the small pieces would normally have to be fitted back together with surgery.” Recovery Girl instructed her student as Izuku’s hand began to glow green again.

“I’m so proud of him.” Inko smiled as she stemmed her tears with a tissue. Watching her son help others as he worked towards his dream of being a Hero made her heart swell with joy.

“We always knew he’d go far, he works hard and has the heart of a Hero.” Hisashi hugged his wife with his own proud smile as they watched Izuku heal his teacher.

‘Recovery Girl wasn’t kidding.’ Izuku thought as he felt the small fragments of bone that were under Aizawa’s skin. They were tiny but thankfully hadn’t moved too far from where they were supposed to be. He gently guided them back together, using Aizawa’s undamaged left eye as a template to heal his fractured right. ‘Slowly, no rush, this fragment goes here, then this one.’ The verdette had small beads of sweat forming on his brow as he felt out the tiny fragments with Healing Aura and eased them back together. It was a slow and methodical process, almost like putting a puzzle together, but after nearly fifteen minutes the orbital floor of Aizawa’s right eye was back in place. ‘Now I just have to heal the micro-fractures and he’ll be fine, no surgery needed.’ The tiny fractures were quickly healed now that the fragments had been properly aligned again. Izuku exhaled and wiped his forehead a few seconds after the green glow faded from his hands.

“Amazing work, young Izuku.” Recovery Girl praised her student as she looked at the once shattered orbital floor with the scanner. Aside from the small deformations that healed bones naturally developed, you wouldn’t think that Aizawa had ever had the injury to begin with.

“Thank you, ma’am.” Izuku smiled to his teacher. He was proud that he’d been able to help as much as he had.

“Now you go and spend the rest of the day with your family, Doctor’s orders.” Recovery Girl chuckled at the family of three.

“Thank you very much.” The Midoriya family all bowed together before they headed out the door of the recovery room to return home. After the door was closed Recovery Girl shook her head as she turned to look at the Underground Hero.

“You could have said thank you, you know?” Recovery Girl lightly admonished the man.

“I’ll tell him on my own time, right now his parents need time with him after the incident.” Aizawa spoke up from behind his bandages. “You still haven’t given me the update on that by the way.”

“You’ll get your report after I unbandage your face and right arm.” Recovery Girl huffed at the workaholic. “Honestly, you’d think you’d be more concerned with your recovery.”

“With Midoriya and you both working on me together, I’m only down my left arm.” Aizawa replied while the elderly Hero started removing the bandages around his eyes and head. “I can work and help with the case without my left arm.”

“You’re such a workaholic, Eraser.” Recovery Girl shook her head. “We’ll work on your left arm over the next few days. Nezu will catch you up to speed in his office once I’m done.”

“That’s fine.” Aizawa agreed as he sat up so that his right arm could be freed from the, now unnecessary, bandages.

-Midoriya Home-

“I’ll get started on dinner right away!” Inko beamed as she kissed the top of Izuku’s head. The teen was tall enough that he had to bend down slightly so his mother could still do that now days. The verdette woman was full of joy that her baby boy was fine and made her way into the kitchen. She knew how much Izuku’s various Quirks required energy and his appetite had only grown to match as he’d aged. Inko was in her element, full-on mothering mode, as she began to prepare a feast for her son. Katsudon would of course have to be included; it was Izuku’s favorite after all!

“Let’s watch some TV, Izu.” Hisashi grinned at his son. “You’re a whole day and a half behind on the Hero News.” He stated in mock horror. Izuku twitched unconsciously and Hisashi chuckled at his son. Izuku quickly went upstairs to his room to grab a notebook and then ran back downstairs to sit with his dad in the living room as the TV was turned on.

The Midoriya home was back to normal now. All members of the family were present, healthy, and happy. Joy and contentment were in the air and the whole home felt warmer and looked brighter. Dinner that night was amazing, both in taste and how much Izuku ate. His parents couldn’t have been happier to have their son home and healthy again.

-U.A. Class 1-A ~ Homeroom-

“Midoriya!” Half the class erupted into a cheer as Izuku opened the door to the classroom. Izuku stopped dead for a second at the loud greeting. Seeing most of his classmates smiling brightly at him, he returned their smiles. He wasn’t expecting what happened next.

“Izuku…” Camie spoke, her tone soft and lacking its usual pomp. The fawn-haired teen looked at Izuku as if she was uncertain that he was really there. She walked towards him and Izuku, seeing her state, smiled at her.

“Utsushimi, how are you?” Izuku greeted Camie with a smile.

“Izuku!” Camie practically crushed him as her arms wrapped around him and she buried her face into his chest. Izuku’s stunned face quickly turned red from the hug. Steam would have probably started to form and Izuku would have become a babbling wreck if he hadn’t heard the slight sniffling that Camie was making as she tried to squeeze the life out of him.

“I’m alright,” Izuku assured the girl as his own hand came up to gently rub her back. “I’m glad you’re okay, Utsushimi.” His caring nature instantly made him try and comfort the girl that was close to crying as she held onto him.

“I was worried, so much.” Camie’s muffled voice could only be heard by Izuku. Unconsciously he tightened his hold on her as he continued rubbing her back gently. He hadn’t meant to worry her so much. He didn’t want to worry any of his classmates, but especially not the ever-cheerful Camie.

“I’m okay, we’re all okay, Utsushimi.” Izuku consoled the fawn-haired teen.

“It’s Camie, I told you to call me that.” Camie spoke up as she pulled back to look him in the eye.

“R-right, Camie…” Izuku knew his cheeks were probably red as he forced himself not to stutter or fidget.

“There’s that cute smile.” Camie hummed happily, her own beautiful smile appearing and making Izuku both happy and flustered at the same time.

“I’m glad you’re back, Midoriya.” Tsuyu spoke up as her own arms wrapped around Izuku in a hug. “Thank you for saving me.”

“Of course, Tsuyu,” Izuku gave the frog-like girl a smile even as he tried to come to grips with the fact that two pretty girls were hugging him at the same time. “I wasn’t going to let them hurt you.”

“Kero…” Tsuyu hid her now red face by ducking her head and resting it on Izuku’s shoulder.

“Oh come on! Why does he, get a Harem?!” Mineta stood on his chair and pointed at Izuku being held by Camie and Tsuyu.

“Shut it.” Kyouka snapped as one of her jacks extended, jabbed Mineta in the forehead and knocked him out of the chair. The purple-headed teen’s body flailed, as the amplified vibrations of her Quirk were sent through him.

Most of the class moved to greet Izuku and welcome him back, while offering thanks for the USJ once Camie and Tsuyu let go of him. They didn’t leave his side, of course, just stopped hugging him. Ochako surprised everyone when she also hugged Izuku and held him close with relieved tears in her eyes. Izuku comforted the brunette to the best of his abilities. He reassured her that he was all right, that he wasn’t going anywhere, and that he was happy she was okay. Momo had given him such a happy smile, filled with relief, that he almost expected another hug. But it seemed the young lady’s upbringing stopped her from initiating such contact.

“Take your seats, homeroom is about to start.” Aizawa stated as he opened the door and entered the classroom. The teens quickly got to their seats and noticed that their teacher didn’t look bad at all for having been so severely injured the last time they’d seen him. Having only his left arm splinted and in a sling was a far cry from what any of them expected, barring Izuku. Most of them had been wandering who’d take over for Aizawa while he recovered.

“Mr. Aizawa, I’d like to congratulate you on your quick recovery.” Iida raised his hand as he spoke from his seat.

“Thank you.” Aizawa nodded slightly as he stood behind the podium. “You can thank Midoriya for my mostly recovered state. He and Recovery Girl both used their Quirks to treat me. Thank you, Midoriya.”

“You’re welcome, sir.” Izuku gave a short bow from his seat.

“Now, we have some things to go over today.” Aizawa was back to his normal, no nonsense, self. “There won’t be a Foundational Heroics Class today after normal classes. All of you will be going to see Hound Dog for a Psychological Assessment. After the USJ there is a chance that some of you are holding onto trauma from the attack. As a certified Trauma Counselor, Hound Dog can help you through it. Be honest during your time with him or you may be removed from the Hero Course.”

“Yes, sir.” The class chorused, though some were less than enthusiastic about it.

“Mineta.” Aizawa zeroed in on the short teen. “You’ll be going first this afternoon. We’ll be having a very serious meeting afterwards about your behavior, do you understand?”

“Y-yes, s-s-sir.” Mineta nodded rapidly as Aizawa’s gaze bore into him.

Everyone in the class was fairly certain this had something to do with Mineta’s rather perverse nature, words, and actions. All of the girls, even the invisible Toru, looked justified at Mineta getting called out for his behavior. Tsuyu, unnoticed by most, had a slightly relieved look in her eyes. Her form that she had handed in to Ms. Midnight had apparently been taken seriously. She was glad about that.

“Now, knowing that you have these meetings coming up, there is one more announcement that must be made.” Aizawa informed his class. “The U.A. Sports Festival is coming up.”

“Yes!” Kirishima cheered with his fists raised in front of him. “Let’s go kick some ass!” He was quieted by Kaminari’s hand being shoved against his face.

“Wait a second!” Kaminari protested, the blonde was clearly repeating something he’d already said before.

“Is it really such a good idea to still hold the Sports Festival after Villains attacked?” Kyouka questioned Aizawa, getting a nod from Kaminari.

“I mean, couldn’t they attack again when even more people are packed into one place?” Sero asked and a few students looked questioningly towards Aizawa.

“If I hadn’t been interrupted, you all would know that your very participation this year hinges on Hound Dog’s findings. If you refuse to go to your meeting this afternoon, you’ll be barred from the Festival. If you lie, and Hound Dog will know if you do, you’ll also be banned from the Festival.”

“That’s bullshit!” Bakugo barked as he shot to his feet.

“Sit down.” Aizawa’s hair rose as his eyes glowed a bright red. His glare would make any thug or low-level Villain obey. Bakugo tried to withstand the look through sheer stubbornness, but he also knew Aizawa could simply deny him the ability to compete in the Festival. With a huff Bakugo sat down stiffly in his chair with a scowl on his face.

“Sorry, sir.” Bakugo apologized grudgingly with a small bow form his seated position. Aizawa gave him another moment of his glare before deactivating his Quirk and nodding to the ash-blonde.

“To answer your questions, the administration thinks this is a good way to show that the threat has been handled. That our school is safer than ever.” Aizawa spoke calmly, in the tone of a professional reading off the decision of their higher-ups. “We’re also increasing security compared to past years. This event is a huge opportunity for all students at U.A. it’s not something we can cancel because of a Villain attack.”

“Why not? It’s just the Sports Festival.” Mineta looked worried at the thought of another potential Villain attack.

“Mineta,” Izuku turned to look at the boy that sat behind him. “Don’t you know how important the Sports Festival is?”

“Of course I do!” Mineta responded while small beads of sweat appeared on his forehead. “I just don’t want to get murdered!”

“The U.A. Sports Festival is one of the most watched events in the country.” Aizawa spoke a bit louder to end their conversation. “When it comes to competition between future Heroes, the U.A. Sports Festival is number one in Japan for viewership.”

“That’s right,” Momo agreed from her seat behind Mineta. “Top Heroes from all over the country will be watching. This is an event where you can get scouted.”

“Yeah, unless you’re dead!” Mineta retorted, still looking uneasy about the event.

“She’s got a point though,” Kaminari piped up with a grin. “After graduation, a lot of people join Pro Agencies as a Sidekick!”

“Yeah, but that’s as far as some people ever go.” Kyouka glanced at the blonde. “They miss their chance to go independent and stay eternal Sidekicks. Actually, that’s probably where you’re headed, you’re kinda dumb sometimes.”

“Hey…” Kaminari practically pouted at the critique. “I’m getting better…”

“It’s true that getting scouted and joining a famous Hero Agency can get you more experience and even popularity.” Aizawa admitted to the class of teens. “That’s why this Festival matters. If you want to go Pro one day, this event can open up doors for you. You get one chance a year, three chances in a lifetime. No aspiring Hero can afford to miss this Festival. Which means you can’t slack off in your lessons or training. Am I clear?”

“Yes sir!” The class chorused.

-Lunch-

Izuku was trying to enjoy his lunch. He was really trying to eat normally. But he was fidgeting. He knew he was, but he couldn’t help it. Why was he fidgeting? It probably had something to do with the fact that Camie was sitting on his right, Ochako was sitting on his left, Tsuyu and Momo were sitting across from him, and the only male in his vicinity was the quiet Kouda.

‘Are they having one of those silent conversations?’ Izuku wondered as he noticed the four girls giving each other looks from time to time. He was curious what they were ‘talking’ about if that was the case. But his head felt hot from the proximity of four cute girls so close to him. His task of just trying to eat his lunch normally was kind of preventing him from digging into what the girls were doing.

‘I know you three like him.’ Camie glance at Ochako, Tsuyu, and Momo.

‘Maybe.’ Ochako looked down slightly from Camie’s glance.

‘Yes.’ Tsuyu’s look was just as blunt as her usual speech.

‘I-I-I…’ Momo’s cheeks were turning pink and she looked at her food.

‘I do too.’ Camie’s next look conveyed her feelings. ‘What are we going to do about this?’

‘I don’t know.’ Ochako looked lost as she glanced at the three other girls.

‘I’ve never felt like this before.’ Momo’s shy gaze spoke volumes.

‘I’m not giving him up.’ Tsuyu’s eyes narrowed slightly.

‘Then let’s talk after school.’ Camie raised an eyebrow at her fellow Izuku-likers.

‘Okay.’ Ochako gave a slight nod.

‘Yes, that would be best.’ Momo looked flushed but her gaze was firm.

‘I’ll be there.’ Tsuyu gave a gentle nod.

“You like Katsudon, Izuku?” Camie spoke up after the girls had finished their silent conversation.

“Oh, yeah, it-it’s my favorite.” Izuku barely stopped himself from yelping at suddenly being talked to. The fact that Camie was almost leaning against his right arm probably didn’t help either.

“Hmm, maybe I’ll learn how to make it then.” Camie grinned at him before giving him a wink.

“O-okay!” Izuku was sure he suddenly heard the sound of steam escaping a tea kettle. Maybe it was coming from how it felt like his face had just caught fire?

“Is there any certain way you like your Katsudon?” Camie probed as her generous bust made contact with Izuku’s arm.

“I-I like h-how my mom m-makes it.” Izuku stuttered out as his body locked up.

“Oh?” Camie’s grin turned downright mischievous. “Maybe I should learn from her then?”

“Camie!” Ochako blurted out, her hands on her own blushing cheeks.

“I know how to cook, kero.” Tsuyu gave Izuku a smile and her fellow verdette probably invented a new shade of red on his cheeks then and there.

“Tsuyu!” Momo gasped at the bold move by the frog-like girl. Her cheeks could easily give Ochako or Izuku a run for their money.

‘Nice one, Tsu!’ Camie winked at the cute girl.

‘I won’t fall behind.’ Tsuyu’s smile transmitted her message very well.

Izuku felt like he could use a distraction and turned to look at Kouda. The Anivoice User was distinctly not looking in Izuku’s direction though. The mess of a verdette would have called the quiet boy a traitor, but honestly, he’d probably be doing the same thing if their roles were reversed.

A bit further down the table Mina, Toru, and Kyouka were all quietly snickering together. The three were very much enjoying the entertainment of Izuku surrounded by four girls that all clearly liked him. The idea to start taking bets was even floated for a bit, but dropped when they realized it would probably interfere with their ability to enjoy this budding relationship. What all three of the girls knew was that it was going to be one very amusing aspect of their class for the foreseeable future!
