Taste in Music – A Harry Potter One-shot

Harry Potter was more than a bit incensed when he arrived at Twelve Grimmauld Place, the Headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix. After an entire summer of being ignored by his friends he was practically going spare at the Dursley’s. Then out of nowhere last night Remus, Moody, and the woman, who insisted he call her Tonks, had broken into the Dursley’s house and then brought him here on a long broom flight. While he was grateful to finally get away from his relatives he was still upset at his friends for ignoring him. Finding out from Hermione that they did it on Dumbledore’s order didn’t make it any better in Harry’s eyes.

The high point to coming to Grimmauld Place was being able to talk to Sirius as much as possible. Initially Harry was supposed to share a room with Ron, but seeing his anger towards his friends Sirius put his foot down and gave Harry a room of his own. Harry still remembered the argument, short though it was that Molly Weasley and Sirius had the night before.

-Flashback-

“Harry dear, you’ll be rooming with Ron, all right?” Molly said as she pulled back from the hug she’d just enveloped Harry in. Harry grimaced at the thought, still upset that he’d not been contacted at all so far this summer. Sirius noticing the look on his godson’s face decided to intervene on his behalf.

“Nonsense, Molly, there are plenty of rooms here. Harry can have my brother’s old room. It’s been cleaned and it’s right next to mine.” Sirius spoke while smiling at his godson. He was even happier when he saw the smile on Harry’s face.

“Sirius, Harry needs to spend some time with his friends. He can spend more time with them if he and Ron are sharing a room together.” Molly responded while giving Sirius a pointed look.

“Well why don’t we ask my godson what he wants then?” Sirius questioned the Weasley matriarch before turning towards Harry. “How about it, Pup; do you want to have my brother’s old room or room with Ron while you’re here?”

“I’ll take the room next to Sirius, it’d be brilliant.” Harry replied with a smile which Sirius matched.

“Alright pup let’s get your things upstairs!” Sirius exclaimed as he and Harry made their way up the steps.

“SIRIUS BLACK YOU STOP BEING SUCH A CHILD THIS INSTANT!” Molly yelled with fury while staring at Sirius like she did the twins when they’d done something wrong. The loud yell however woke the portrait of Walburga Black causing the curtains covering the portrait to part and allowed the painting to start screeching.

“BLOOD TRAITORS! MUDBLOOD FILTH! GET OUT OF MY HOUSE! KREACHER THROW THEM OUT! THROW THEM OUT NOW!” Walburga screeched causing almost everyone in the entryway to cover their ears from the harsh sound.

“Now look what you did!” Sirius yelled at Molly as he rushed up the steps and got directly in front of his mother’s portrait. “SHUT YOUR MOUTH YOU BIGOTED OLD HAG OF A HARPY!” Sirius yelled over his mother’s continued screeches.

“How dare you! You’re no son of mine!” Walburga yelled at Sirius before he grabbed both curtains and forced them closed over the portrait. With a sigh of relief he turned towards Molly with a reprimanding glare. The Weasley matriarch had the decency to look ashamed at causing such an uproar.

“Come on, Harry, let’s get you set up for your stay.” Sirius said softly as Harry quickly, but quietly, followed his godfather up the stairs. It wasn’t much longer that Harry was led to a bedroom that was large and in a surprisingly better condition than the rest of the house. As the godfather and godson got Harry’s things put away they began to talk and catch up with each other. Sirius told Harry that the bedroom was in better condition than the rest of the house because the family house elf, Kreacher, was particularly fond of his brother Regulus Black and so had kept his bedroom in as pristine a state as possible compared to the rest of the house. After a somewhat tense dinner with the rest of the current residents of Grimmauld Place, Harry returned to his temporary room next to Sirius’ room for the night.

-End Flashback-

A knock on the door startled Harry from his reminiscing; he quickly walked over and opened the door to see Sirius standing there with what looked to be a record player and a cardboard box full of vinyl records.

“Sirius, what is all this?” Harry asked perplexed as he let his godfather into the room.

“I asked Remus to get some music for when you came over. I know what it’s like to be a teenager and music is a good way to vent when you’re upset.” Sirius replied with a grin as he put the record player down on the night stand and the box on the bed.

“I thought electronics don’t work around magic?” Harry questioned as he watched Sirius set up the record player.

“They don’t usually. But if you convert them to mechanical power you can spell them to keep powered for a long time.” Sirius answered as he showed Harry that the player didn’t have a power cord but instead had a small hand crank.

“That’s brilliant.” Harry said excited at the thought of actually listening to music that he wanted to without being yelled at by the Dursley’s. Harry wasn’t even sure what type of music he liked considering he’d had so few opportunities to listen to music in his life.

“I had Remus get a selection of different things from a muggle record store. Plus a few records that some of the magical bands and groups use. They figured out that they can sell records of their songs around the time I was in Hogwarts. It definitely made some of the dorm parties a lot more fun when someone brought out a record the staff wouldn’t approve of.” Sirius snickered as he finished with the player and motioned Harry towards the box. “I didn’t know what genre you liked so I had Remus get a little of everything. We’ve got a few magical bands and singers too. The ‘Weird Sisters’, of course, the older ‘Boiling Cauldrons’, Celestina Warbeck, ‘The Broom Men’ are from the early sixties; plus a few more from the magical side.

We’ve got a selection of muggle records too. ‘Simply Red’, ‘The Beatles’, ‘Elton John’, ‘Queen’, some groups from across the pond like ‘Metallica’, ‘Michael Jackson’ and ‘Guns & Roses’, and several more. Of course Remus insisted you try classical as well so there’s some of that. Huh, even some opera by someone called ‘Luciano Pavarotti’, Remus always did have a different music taste than me.” Sirius chuckled as he and Harry looked through the various records. The next few hours were spent with Harry and Sirius listening to various songs and trying to find out what Harry enjoyed musically.

The next day after lunch Harry was once again listening to music. At the moment he was listening to one of the American rock bands. The song was called ‘The Unforgiven’ and Harry thought it kind of fit how he was feeling. The Ministry was slandering him, but when Voldemort stopped hiding and made his return known they’d be the first to expect Harry to fight against him. It felt like Dumbledore tried to lead his life and he had to admit, at least to himself, that he wouldn’t forgive the constant back and forth opinion that the people of the magical world had about him. He was always being labelled this or that and wasn’t allowed to just be Harry; so this particular song really did resonate a bit with the teen.

There was a knock on the door and Harry sighed as he carefully lifted the needle off the record. It was probably Ron or Hermione and Harry still wasn’t ready to forgive them for the lack of contact. Heading over to the door Harry opened it only to be met by the woman called Tonks.

“Wotcher, Harry, you all right up here?” Tonks asked with some concern.

“Yeah, I’m fine, just listening to some of the music Sirius and Remus got for me.” Harry replied to the pink haired witch.

“Yeah, I heard, the Muffling Charm on the room is probably wearing down. If you’d like I can recast it for you.” Tonks offered with a smile.

“That’d be nice. I don’t want to disturb anyone with the music.” Harry replied as he let Tonks into the room. The older witch quickly went about casting the Muffling Charm on each of the four walls the floor and even the ceiling.

“There you go, Harry, no noise will leave the room as long as the door is closed.” Tonks said as she put her wand away.

“Thanks, Tonks, I appreciate it.” Harry replied as he gently placed the ‘Metallica’ record back into its sleeve. Sitting on the bed Harry was about to place the record back into the cardboard box with the others when Tonks suddenly spoke again.

“I didn’t know you liked Rock music, Harry.” Tonks said with a grin as she strode over to the bed and looked at the box full of records. It was then Harry noticed that Tonks’ hair had turned from pink to purple during the time it had taken her to walk to the bed. Harry realized he must have had a confused look on his face when Tonks answered his unasked question. “I’m a metamorphmagus,” the now purpled haired witch explained before noticing he still looked confused. “It means I can change my body at will without a spell. It’s a rather rare magical ability that shows up from time to time among certain magical bloodlines.”

“Really?” Harry asked in surprise. “Can you change everything?”

“Let me show you,” Tonks said with a smirk before carefully scrutinizing Harry’s face and then gave a quick glance up and down his body. Tonks closed her eyes in concentration and before Harry’s eyes her features slowly began to morph into his own. Harry blinked in surprise at the now double of him standing in front of him wearing Tonks’ clothes.

“Um… you replicated everything?” Harry asked awkwardly with a tinge of red dusting his cheeks.

Giving a somewhat feminine giggle that just didn’t match the body she was currently wearing; at least in Harry’s opinion, he was fifteen he didn’t giggle, Tonks patted her crotch to show that there weren’t any male parts.

“Nope,” Tonks replied cheekily as she shifted back into her previous form with purple hair. “In theory I can replicate your bits if I know how they work but I’ve never really been interested enough to learn. Can’t really think of any time I’d need man bits.” Tonks said with a grin and a wink.

“Stop, stop,” Harry said his face bright red with his hands held up in protest. “I don’t need or want to know.” Tonks looked like she was about to burst out laughing at him.

“So what other kinds of music do you like?” Tonks asked as she sat on the bed when Harry motioned for her to take a seat. Thankful for the change in topic Harry showed her the box of records. Their discussion turned to music genres and bands they liked. Tonks told Harry she didn’t really have a favorite genre; she usually listened to a range of genres depending on her mood, though she did like the Weird Sisters and a couple of the muggle bands that Harry had. Eventually other topics were brought up in their ongoing conversation. One such topic was Tonks’ relation to Sirius.

“You’re related to him?” Harry asked in surprise. Tonks and Sirius didn’t look similar at all. It was hard to see the relation between the two.

“Unfortunately, he’s my second cousin, I believe” Tonks jokingly explained. “My mum was disowned for marrying my father though, so legally speaking I don’t think we’re related.”

“Is everyone in magical Britain related?” Harry questioned somewhat curious, maybe even morbidly so if some of the things he’d overheard at Hogwarts was any indication of how ‘close’ some families got.

“I think there is a Charlus Potter on the Black family tapestry, he was your great uncle if I remember what mum tried to teach me when I was a kid. I’d have to look at the Black and Potter family trees to know for sure. But I don’t think you’re blood related to the Black family within the last seven or eight generations.” Tonks replied before noticing the look on Harry’s face. “Yeah it can become…uncomfortably interconnected if you go back about five or six generations. It’s usually best not to dig too deep.”

“So how did you know you were a metamorph?” Harry asked to try and change the subject away from magical Britain’s…odd family trees.

“Oh that? My hair was changing color randomly a few days after I was born and occasionally my hair would grow crazy long or retract into my skull until I was bald,” Tonks explained. “It took a few years before my hair stopped changing color or length with every thought or emotion I had. It wasn’t until I was around ten that I could change my skin color and bone structure. Even then I couldn’t make any large changes until I knew how the body worked.”

“Huh, I managed to regrow my hair once after Aunt Petunia shaved almost all of it off.” Harry remarked offhandedly.

“What?” exclaimed Tonks as she snapped her gaze towards Harry and locked eyes with him. “What do you mean you regrew your hair?”

“Uh, when I was seven or eight,” Harry nervously replied, shocked at Tonks’ reaction. “Aunt Petunia cut off most of my hair except a little bit to cover my scar and I grew it back overnight.”

“It didn’t fall apart a little while later?” Tonks asked as her hair turned back to pink. “It was actual hair?”

“Yeah, why?” Harry asked confused.

“You’re a metamorph.” Tonks stated with a smile.

“What?” Harry replied disbelievingly.

“You are a metamorph.” Tonks repeated still smiling.

“Are you sure it wasn’t just accidental magic?” Harry asked not sure if he could believe what Tonks was saying.

“No, no, you don’t understand, Harry.” Tonks continued. “You can’t grow real hair with magic. There are jinxes that can grow hair but it’s not real. It all falls apart after a few hours at best. Only a metamorphmagus can really grow their hair.”

“But you just said your hair changed colors and stuff almost your whole life.” Harry stated in confusion. “That hasn’t happened to me.”

“You might just have a weaker version than mine?” Tonks suggested as she put her hand on her chin in a thinking position. “We can test it out with some exercises that I used to control my morphing.”

“I guess I’m willing to try. But please don’t tell anyone, I don’t need any more attention.” Harry requested getting a promise from Tonks not to tell anyone. Nervous the he could soon have some minor metamorph powers to deal with, Harry was happy to have Tonks tell him they could work on it tomorrow and shift the conversation back towards music. The two spent a few hours together just listening to music from Harry’s box of records.

The next day, just after lunch, Tonks returned to Grimmauld Place. After reporting to the Order and greeting the other residents she went up to Harry’s room and knocked on the door. Letting Harry know it was her quickly saw the wizard opening the door and letting Tonks inside. The sound of the band ‘Simply Red’ was softly playing as Tonks made her way into the room.

“Not a bad choice. They’re definitely a popular group.” Tonks commented on the music.

“Yeah, I’m trying out multiple genres; trying to see if one sticks out to me more than others.” Harry replied with a shrug. Tonks nodded at the logic of Harry’s statement before starting the first of their secret metamorphmagus training sessions.

“Shirt and pants off!” Tonks exclaimed with a wide smile as Harry sat on the bed and she stood a few meters in front of him.

“What?!” Harry exclaimed in shock as he blushed bright red. Tonks often used borderline sexual innuendo in the few days he’d known her but this was something else entirely!

“Hahahahaha! You should see the look on your face!” Tonks laughed hysterically as she held her sides while Harry glared at her for the prank.

“Tonks be serious!” Harry said with a grimace, he wasn’t pouting!

“Sirius is downstairs Harry. I can morph into him for a demonstration if you want.” Tonks chuckled as Harry shook his head at her antics.

“Can we just get started?” Harry asked causing Tonks to stifle her laughter and nod. Tonks walked Harry through a few of the exercises she’d used to get her metamorphmagus abilities under control when she was younger. Harry wasn’t able to make any progress during his first lesson, but Tonks assured him that it would just take some time.

“How about we just hangout and listen to some music, Harry? We still haven’t gotten through all of your records.” Tonks offered with a smile as she sat next to Harry on the bed.

“Sure, that’d be brilliant.” Harry replied with a smile of his own as he put the box of records between the two of them. “Anything you want to hear in particular?”

“We left off with a muggle group last time, so let’s start with a magical group today. Mum said ‘The Broom Men’ had a few good songs.” Tonks replied as Harry nodded before starting to flip through the box to find the record in question. After finding the correct sleeve and putting the record on the player. The two started listening to the first song on the record called ‘Flying to You’ a love song that had been very popular when the group had been together years ago.

The metamorph lessons continued in secret for another week and after each lesson Harry and Tonks would simply spend time together listening to music. Harry had finally managed to grow and shrink his hair a little bit but wasn’t able to change its color in the slightest. With only about nine days left before Harry, Hermione and the Weasley children left for Hogwarts, Harry was fairly certain he wouldn’t be changing his hair color before he returned to school. At the moment Harry was listening to an Elton John record, he was impressed by the man’s piano playing talent, when there came a familiar knock on the door. With a smile he got up and let Tonks into his room. Just after the two had sat on the bed to get started with the lesson the record changed over to the next song. ‘Can You Feel the Love Tonight’ began to play causing Harry to blush when Tonks gave him a playful smirk.

“Why Harry, are you trying to tell me something?” Tonks asked with a teasing tone as she batted her eyelashes.

“I didn’t…I mean…I had nothing to do with that.” Harry forced out as he blushed to the roots of his hair. How could this get more embarrassing?

“Harry! You did it! You changed your hair color!” Tonks exclaimed with joy as she watched Harry’s hair change from black to a bright red.

“What? I did? How?” Harry questioned as he picked up a small mirror Tonks had brought so that he could see the change.

“Emotions are very important in magic, Harry. Music happens to be a good way to change and express emotion. So the combination of the music and your emotions probably helped you out.” Tonks explained as she pulled Harry into a hug causing him to blush even harder.

“Your teasing probably had even more to do with this than your admitting, Tonks.” Harry accused when Tonks broke their hug.

“Maybe~…but are you complaining?” Tonks asked with a smirk while fluttering her eyelashes again. Harry blushed again and asked if they could finish the lesson. This routine proceeded for a couple more days before Harry eventually managed to build up his Gryffindor courage and at the end of one lesson he just leaned in and gently kissed the, currently, purple haired girl. He was partially terrified that he’d just ruined their friendship before she kissed him back too.

“Well, that was something else, Harry. Did you want to tell me something?” Tonks questioned playfully while taking hold of Harry’s hand and intertwining their fingers.

“Yeah…um…it’s just…I really like spending time with you, Tonks. I always feel happy when you’re around and the favorite part of my time here has been when we’re just relaxing and listening to music together.” Harry said with a blush blazing across his cheeks.

“I enjoy our time together too, Harry. I find myself always looking forward to our lessons and just laying around together while listening to music afterwards. So, do you have a question you’d like to ask me?” Tonks replied with a smile.

“Tonks…would you be my girlfriend?” Harry asked nervously still somewhat sure that the beautiful older witch would say no.

“Yes I will, Harry.” Tonks answered with a bright smile.

“Really?” Harry asked almost in disbelief.

“Of course, you goof, now come here.” Tonks laughed as she pulled Harry into another kiss. Harry happily kissing his new girlfriend back almost delirious from the joy he was experiencing.

After the beginning of their new relationship the metamorphmagus lessons and following hangout time became Harry’s favorite time in his life so far. Their musical hanging out often turned into making out while listening to music. It was only a few days before Harry returned to Hogwarts when Tonks let him touch her breasts for the first time. Even with her clothes between them Harry could still swear he’d never felt anything better in his life. Harry quickly made making Tonks gasp in pleasure as he fondled her breasts his mission for the last three days of his summer.

“Mum is going to kill me.” Tonks stated with a sigh as she and Harry cuddled while listening to a soft, slow love song on his bed. “Falling for a guy six years younger than me; I’ll never hear the end of it.”

“No she won’t,” Harry replied as he gave her a tight squeeze. “I love you, Tonks. I’ve never felt this way before, but I never want it to end.” Tonks pulled back from his embrace at hearing those three special words. He could see so many emotions in her eyes as her lips hovered close to his.

“You do? Like you’d want to get married someday, kind of love?” she asked nervously. Her eyes displaying more to Harry than any words could.

“I do,” Harry replied with as much love as he could put into his declaration. “I know we can’t right now, but when we can I’ll ask, I promise.” Tonks didn’t say anything for a moment before a loving smile took over and she leaned in and captured Harry’s lips sharing their first kiss as more than boyfriend and girlfriend. It was soft and love filled with both trying to show each other how much they loved one another; as they separated Tonks sighed in content before speaking.

“Then I hope you’re going to be ready to marry right out of Hogwarts, mister. Because I don’t plan to wait any longer before I make you my husband.” Tonks stated cheekily causing Harry to chuckle happily before pulling her close again to resume their cuddling.

I know you wrote this a long time ago, but I would love to read a multi-chapter story based on this some day!
