I just finished reading a trilogy of historical novels about Cicero; "smug grovelling" characterizes a lot of his life (he survived even more than the 3 regimes you comment on him surviving in this show!). He was pragmatic (or less charitably, cowardly) enough to know he needs to appease the powerful people with groveling, but too principled (or had too big of an ego) to hold his tongue if he thought they were doing something evil. The books were written from the POV of the bald slave you see in the background of shots with Cicero (who had been freed by this time) - it's interesting how a background character in one telling of a story, can be the protagonist of another telling. This slave preserved Cicero's correspondence, so we've got of his candid letters to friends about Julius Caesar (who he opposed), so the period isn't totally known from Caesar's own propagandist accounts. You're right that Cicero was potentially dangerous, but he was also useful as the most respected senator; having him on side would get the rest of the senate on side too (which most rulers would've thought necessary for legitimacy). I don't think Cicero sent troops to help Marc Anthony. I think Marc is saying that Cicero's speeches denouncing Marc backfired and made the common soldiers like him more (so they switched sides and joined him). I could be wrong here. I can't hear the similarity in the actor's intonations you mention, unsure if that means it is a subtle thing only someone with audio editing experience would consciously notice, or that I'm bad at noticing things Rubbing animal blood in your face seems really unhygienic, i wonder how many diseases spread that way :S
