It does seem like violence was sometimes needed back in the iron age - but there were pacifists (a lot of christians and Buddhists) even in the bronze age so it isn't unrealistic people in this show think "violence is never the answer" even if they are wrong (in the time they live in). Arguing against violence in a world where it seems more justified than the modern world is definitely harder to do, than it is to argue against violence in the modern world, but it's probably more worthwhile if you can do it (since we already know violence today is wrong). I'm not sure if this author can do it though as I'm unsure if it's a valid point back then.

I find the religious aspects of the show interesting, as it's set in a time when some people were pagan and others christian, but the author comes from a 'pagan' country. It's a different take on these religious themes than you'd get from a western author.
