I think the stuff Marc Anthony says in his meeting with Brutus is the main reason Caesar wasn't afraid of the senate. Caesar was very popular with the people and had a huge army stationed nearby that was fanatically loyal to him. It's unlikely to end well for you if you kill a guy who is that popular, Caesar probably thought the Senators understood this enough to not attack him. He underestimated how stupid they were >_< Just a decade before this, another guy popular with the people (Clodius) got killed by people supportive of the senate; the people tried to lynch senators and ended up burning down the senate house in the riots that followed. I suspect Caesar thought the senators would remember that? Then again, the ancient sources basically say "he was really arrogant" so that definitely factored into it! It's a shame the episode basically skips the funeral. Marc Anthony's speech that riled up the masses is a big part of Shakespeare's play Julius Ceaser and other films about this event. The show runners said it would cost too much to show the speech; you know more about that than i do, but it seems odd a speech would be too expensive to film. Lictors are basically bodyguards for elected officials in Rome. They seem to have mostly played a ceremonial role though, kinda like the British royal guards with the big black hats.

You know I was wondering if they cut the speech for budgetary reasons but then I realized they did have crowd shots of the stuff immediately before the speech so how much extra expense would it have been? You already have a crowd assembled, just get some extra reaction shots from them and then shoot him giving the speech on a different day with closeups. So its interesting that it WAS budgetary reasons after all.
