Yeah, Askeladd's men didn't seem like bitches until now, but I guess the excuse is that they knew that the 100 or so of them couldn't stand up against Thorkell and his 500 men (really, I think Thorkell alone could take them all on, with the exception of Askeladd, Thorfinn, and maybe Bjorn)

About what the priest was talking about- I think it boils down to unconditional love- nature and the elements affect everyone the same (snow, wind, sunshine, etc) and don’t/can’t arbitrarily discriminate, much like a dead man is no longer able to hate or complain. Maybe it’s nonsense or not expressed in the clearest way, but it got to me, especially the line about a man simultaneously fawning over a king while whipping a slave. The way humans love their family/friends/significant others while being indifferent to or even hating others is discrimination- I don’t think that makes it necessarily a bad thing. It’s kind of daunting to try to imagine everyone loving everyone else equally, and I think maybe that’s part of the Prince’s realization and awakening- that God has set an impossible task for humans, believing the trials and tribulations they’re put through to be futile. So he’s angry at such a God, and now determined to create paradise on earth so people won’t need Heaven/God’s paradise. I absolutely love Canute, he’s my third favorite character, behind Thorkell and Askeladd- I didn’t want to mention this before now, because you would have been utterly confused as to how Canute could be a top character lol

Yeah he's quickly become one of my favorite characters. And you illustrate another reason why, in the world they live in its almost impossible to imagine any way of living and yet he is imagining that. It's very interesting and I hadn't thought about it until you laid it out like that
