I wonder what kind of waste it makes economic sense to go into space to dispose of illegally? The episodes are in a different order to how they're presented in the manga. Episode 10 is, oddly enough, the first chapter of the manga. Googling it, it seems the company mascot is a reference to an alien from a manga by the same person who made this and Vinland saga, it's just a cameo (I'm surprised i never wondered wtf it is meant to be until you asked). Mascot characters for companies are very common in Japan but not so common in the west, I expect they'd explain it more if the west was the intended audience. I've worked in a job 1 step removed from saving lives (a medical testing lab) and it is surprising / scary how people don't take it seriously, so i don't think the characters not taking their jobs too seriously despite them being vital is that unrealistic

Actually once you frame it as a company mascot it makes total sense. It would be like if a show was based on a division within Disney, and the employees were stuffing boxes with Mickey Mouse dolls, the show wouldn't stop to explain what they were doing. We would just get it. That makes so much sense and is a fun creator cameo.
