Episode 6 is not in the manga. It is "filler." It's my go-to example of filler not always being bad, like you say.

So far I haven't seen any episode or scene I felt was superfluous. So they're doing a good job. Question, is the manga finished or are they producing the show as it continues?

I think that the motion that Askeladd made to convince Thorfinn to do what he needed in episode 6 was intended to be like slicing at his neck, in other words saying that Thorfinn would get a duel (or get closer to be allowed a duel) where he could have a chance to kill him. I haven’t read the manga, and it’s not super clear, but I think that they have actually had multiple duels over the years, I mean maybe there’s a year or two, or a good amount of time in between, but it seems to me to be implied that Askeladd pushing his buttons the way he did in episode 8 has happened in every duel (like Bjorn has this look on his face seeming to say “here we go again” or something along those lines when they focused on him after Thorfinn lost his temper), but I could be wrong.
