Kudos to Klaus for giving you the hint about their current military technology (or lack thereof)- I figured you would realize as you kept watching, but I guess now you can move on from wondering why they aren't using airplanes to drop bombs on the titans lol Sadly, I barely paid attention to Jean on my first watch of season 1, but I think I was overwhelmed at the amount of characters and the horrific premise- he's now one of my many favorites. Sure, he was kind of being a coward, but he was also being smart knowing that they probably couldn't spare the gas to try and jump in and help the people getting eaten (if they ran out mid-save, that's all of them dead anyway)- and he was agonizing over not stopping the others from jumping in rather than over not jumping in himself, if that makes sense. Don't be afraid to spend some time theorizing- I'm not one with an imagination or whatever to come up with theories on things myself, so I just let the show carry me along- but there are reactors that literally spend 45 minutes or more discussing/theorizing on a single episode, and I usually stick that out, sometimes it's painful when they're totally wrong, but it's usually kind of fun to guess how the truth will hit them when it comes. Also, in that scene when Mikasa was giving up (then deciding not to), that was a pomegranate on the ground that they kept focusing on- I think it's symbolic of renewed hope/life.

Oh that was a pomegranate! I couldn't figure out what the hell it was. (I thought maybe a sliced off piece of Titan but why keep cutting to it?) This makes a lot more sense.
