PS. After sleeping on it, I think I know why the writers arranged the series the way they did. The opening monologue talks about how destiny is inevitable ... so showing the outcome before showing how we got there thematically reinforces this idea. It's hard to believe in Free Will when we already know how things are going to turn out. Thematically, its actually very clever and I no longer disagree with how they did it.

However, I still disagree with the premise. Just because you know, with the benefit of hindsight, that I recorded episodes 18-25 and episode 1 over this last weekend doesn't mean I had no free will last Thursday. I had Free Will last Thursday, last Friday, and over the weekend. I could have chosen to do something else instead of record Berserk. I CHOSE to record Berserk. That was my Free Will and you now knowing what my choice was changes nothing. That's the fundamental issue I have with this no free will nonsense. Knowing the future would not remove Free Will, it would only reveal the choices made by that Free Will.

That being said, while during the recording I heavily disagreed with their choice to tell the story out of order, at least now I understand why they did it. That counts for something.

Another thing to keep in mind about the story being out of order is Berserk, like a lot of anime, is based on a comic and in the comic the part told out of order is much longer. You get more time with "future" Guts before the eventual flashback that makes up most of this series. I think it works slightly better in the comic because you get more set-up that makes you ask "how do we get to the point the series opened at?" I think you're spot on for the thematic reasons though.

That makes sense. Also, I think the series should have been 30-40 episodes long to tell the same amount of story. Then we could do what you said, the longer future setup
