I don’t know if you caught it- but in the fight with the nomu, Endeavor acknowledged their similarities- it was a sentient nomu who just seemed to want to fight someone strong- I believe the wording was “myself from the past, or a different future”- he seemed to have a self realization of some kind, so to me it makes more sense for him to live through the fight and see where that takes him- but you’re right that there was story potential with his death as well. I’m pretty excited for season 5- I think it’s generally seen as a weaker season- as is this one I think- maybe it’s kind of like whiplash to go from the darkest arc yet (Overhaul) to probably the lightest and most wholesome one with the school festival- but they tie together well I think- part one, save Eri physically, and part 2- save Eri’s heart by helping her to smile. But I enjoy both of these seasons- season 6 is a huge fan favorite- so I believe people think the show dipped after All Might’s retirement (and not necessarily because of it, just that that was the marking point if that makes sense)- but came back with season 6

One more thing I wanted to talk about- it was probably hard to catch on first watch, especially since Hawks’ quirk hadn’t been explained yet- but while Endeavor and Hawks were walking through town, what we kept seeing was his feathers resolving incidents/helping people/etc- like a feather stopped that “shame quirk” guy, we saw one save a dog, and one carry a bag for an old lady, all while still casually talking and walking- so that’s why we kept seeing Endeavor with a mouth open, finger in the air, “huh?” look on his face- he comes off as carefree and one might assume lazy, but he obviously didn’t get to the number 2 position on popularity/approval rating alone. He’s one of my favorites- I’ll stop gushing about him before I spoil something I shouldn’t lol
