For my next video, I want to explore the way that fathers and father-figures are characterised in animation.

While fathers in real life are nuanced and complex because, you know, they're human - naturally animated characters tend to be simplified (or over-simplified) versions of their general architypes so it makes for a neat way to see how the dads are conveyed according to different generations. From the boomers to the millennials.

I'm currently researching and writing but what are your most notable dad-characters? They can be flawless fathers, decent daddies with some weird or annoying quirks, and/or the straight-up bad-dads.

Lachie Vincent

Irving Beaks from Harvey Beaks (those who know me would have seen this coming)

Jaice Lynn

These are from anime rather than classic cartoons, but the two (absolutely horrible) dads that come to my mind immediately are Kotaro Shimura and Enji Todoroki. Both are from My Hero Academia. That anime loves its shitty dads for some reason.

TellyToon

Is Darkwing Duck/Drake Mallard on that list?

Double X Studios

From western cartoons, I find Mr. Uno, Nigel Uno/Numbah 1's dad from Codename: Kids Next Door to be a GOOD dad. He tries his best to connect with his son, and even states that he want to "be his friend." And while it can be the whole "adults dont understand kids that well" trope, he does at least try and connect with him and even have some genuine nice moments with Nigel.

From Anime, I elect Twilight/Loid Forger from Spy x Family. Even though he's not Anya's biological father, and even though a fake family is made for a mission, he still does well to listen to his daughter, make efforts to understand her and make her happy, and shows and receives love even when we doenst realize it. Found family at its best.

It's been a while since I've seen it, bit John Silver from Disney's Treasure Planet is an oft-cited example of a found father. Technically the Sonic Movie 2 applies? (And the end of 1 to an extent.)
