Honestly Apothecary Diaries might be my favourite show this season behind Frieren. Period drama anime doesn't really do it for me, but the episodes so far have been really good. Hope it keeps the pace for the rest of the season.

Btw, "Apothecary" is another name for a Pharmacist, for example, where I'm from, a pharmacy is called "apotheca" or "apoteka", so basically the Diaries of a pharmacist.

"Pharmacist" is a more common synonym for apothecary. Lot of countries in Europe use variation from Apothecary for their drugstores like in my own language "Apteekki" which in simple terms means place where drugs are manufactured and sold. But Adorkable was right in her thinking that the word is older use for pharmacist.

In case anyone else hasn't pointed it out, the one who smacked away the flower wasn't Lihua. It was one of her maids. You can tell 'cause the woman we see is very healthy looking, not like Lihua who had sunken cheeks and sickly pale skin.

Apothecary is the old term for a compound pharmacist though they have some cross over with physicians and often examined patients themselves.

It's not terribly obvious unless you have some knowledge of both cultures, but even though this is in the Japanese language, it's set in Imperial China. You can tell by the names, architecture, and of course the presence of concubines and eunuchs, all of which are distinctly Chinese, not Japanese.

It has mostly been replaced by 'chemist' and 'pharmacist' in the English speaking world, although it's still used in some modern germanic languages.

I actually just started watching this anime since I was bored waiting for my series to start today! 😅 I checked and I don't think anyone else mentioned it, but in case you were wondering eunuchs were actually more dangerous than any emperor's ever knew. They actually only lost their ability to have kids. They could still perform and honestly they could last longer and satisfy more women after the surgery was done! They put wolves in with the rabbits and they loved it! 🤣
