Soooooooo the term "Gypsy" is actually a slur for the Roma or Romani people. The show actually demonstrates a couple of different perspectives on it. Pretty much any time you see someone not in Tommy's group using it, they're using it in a derogatory manner but Tommy and his family use it in reference to themselves all the time. "Tinker" is another less well known slur for the same group of people that is often used on the show. It's one of those complicated terms where you have many people of Roma heritage find it horrendously offensive whereas others embrace the term and use it regularly. But like the way the lady in the beginning of the episode said it or the way Campbell says it, you can definitely feel the racism there o.o EDIT: By the way, that wasn't a criticism or a condemnation of yall or anything, just providing some background on the word ^_^

Were you planning to do 3 uploads a week?

Only reason they had freddie die is because his actor left the show thats why imo it felt out of nowhere

I really like these reactions. I originally came over from YouTube just for the full anime reactions, But between this & Stranger Things, y'all got me hooked on these live actions ones now too. Also Campbell is Irish but he's Northern Irish & they tend to have a slightly harsher accent, my grandfather was from there & honestly sounded a lot like Campbell at times (sometimes Campbell's accent goes wrong but it's mostly on point). I think in this time period the North & South in Ireland are at war because the North wants to join the UK (England, Scotland & Wales) & the South wants to stay independent. It is still strange hearing people talk about the different areas of Birmingham (UK) though since it's where I'm currently living, I hear those accents every day.

Need more Peaky blinders😮‍💨🫡

I would like to add that Gypsy in itself is not a slur, a lot of Gypsies of Roma and Traveller descent (because not all of them are necessarily Roma, there are Irish Travellers and Scottish Highland Travellers too), do not find the term offensive. Of course, the tone in which you say it can cause offense, but the word itself is not something offensive. At least, in the UK it isn't. Gypsies in America feel differently to those in the UK, and sure there will be some who find offense to the term, and some who won't - the majority don't. In the UK, when you fill out your ethnicity, Gypsy is the legal umbrella term that they will find no issue with checking the box for. It's more of a personal thing to find it offensive, but please do not call it a slur: because that is not what it is. Gypo etc. can be seen as a slur because it was made to purposefully offend and put down Gypsies.

The reason why i referred to it as a slur was because of the origin of the word itself. During the Roma emigration to Europe, the Europeans mistook them for Egyptians. Around the 1500ish these specific Roma had a darker complexion, so the Europeans in their ignorance referred to them as "Gypsies" which was a shortened derogatory term for Egyptians. I have heard both arguments and both are absolutely valid. And like i said before, I'm aware of plenty of people who embrace the word and find no fault in it whatsoever. I've arrived at the conclusion that I'm not ever going to condemn someone for using it, but I don't feel comfortable using it myself. I do also apologize if i have cause any offense by referring to the word as a slur, but I hope my reasoning above sheds some light on why i did so.

Niamh

I'm glad you are being level-headed about this, you did not cause any offense referring to it as a slur, I would just rather people formed their own opinion - like you did, by not wanting to use it yourself - rather than instantly being shut down for saying it because it 'may' cause offense or 'may' be considered a slur by a select few people: who I find are not even Gypsies themselves, but 'allies' and 'saviours' who think they are right in claiming it as a slur, when it is not for a lot of the people who it is actually supposed to 'offend'. Of course, context and tone matters a lot with it, but I know a lot of Gypsies personally who call themselves Gypsies and are proud of that title, but I find a lot of them are Irish Travellers and not Roma, so that may be where the difference in views lies. But from my own personal opinion, and experience, it's not in itself a bad word, or a slur, but Gypo etc. is a problematic way to refer to Gypsies and isn't right.

I see, that makes absolute sense. I greatly appreciate you helping to expand my understanding. I will certainly choose my words more carefully in the future. I had a very particular incident where I was slapped across the face by a very old lady for using it, so I will freely admit that has absolutely affected my outlook and really ingrained into me, "hey, do not use this word. that is not a word i am allowed to use." But i will definitely admit that what you have said will definitely help me avoid flinching when i hear it in the future ;)

Niamh

Ah I am sorry she did that, but she has probably had it used against her in a bad way, but it's still sad that she resorted to slapping you instead of sitting you down and educating you. I can see why you would come to that conclusion though, her bad experiences transferred to you through that slap, and now you have a bad experience with it too. It's a shame, but that's your own experience and her's, and I have my own and my Gypsy friends', so I am glad you are taking this side to the story well. Of course, this is not me telling you to go around saying it willy-nilly, because that would make you feel uncomfortable - for good reasons - but I am glad it does mean you can see it from a different angle, and hopefully you won't be as afraid to hear it being spoken from now on. Especially because this show likes to say it quite a bit haha

Smash Bran'Discootch

There are plenty of times when I'm stubborn and dig in my heels about things, other times when I double down even when I know I'm wrong, but for the most part I try my best to expand my viewpoint in places where it is too narrow. Thank you again for helping me to do so :)

LightMyPath Star

nice surprise didnt know we were getting an episode this week

Yaboyrocklee

I appreciate the knowledge. I noted in today’s episode that we can’t repeat the things the characters are saying lol. We are sometimes unaware of the meanings. Thanks
