It does a good job of honoring what came before while also introducing new characters that you'll enjoy and care about some less than others

Everything you said in there is true and that's what makes this show so good, you have 2 MC's with different levels of expectations for them and both characters are still flawed aka human and the way the story explores the flaws in both of them makes for some great entertainment especially everytime they are in each others prescence
