Your issue with Paul was that he was drunk? And you argument for Rudy was that he was imprisoned for a few weeks? I’m lost… they both had points kind but as we know Rudy is an adult in a child’s body so you using the fact that he’s a child don’t work in that instance because you know different but Paul doesn’t which is why he should have approached it a bit different but I don’t think Paul was wrong in his anger because he stated all facts his anger just got the best of him when Rudy said all that shit so happily like in Pauls mind it don’t sound like you were fighting for your life at all really just that you’ve been having fun while your mom and sibling are missing.

Sonicluis

Facts. Paul’s is 100 💯 right. The only problem was his delivery. But rudy is not a kid and he should have also been able to figure out if he went missing so did his whole family. Rudy is older than paul

I'm not a parent and my opinion about this discussion is that Paul is the one who was wrong in the first place, that's not how you greet your boy after you've barely found him after so long. Secondly he is drunk. Third, you can't blame Ruddeus for everything, when he (an adult) was unable to find anyone in his family. I'm sure Ruddeus will look for his family and do what Paul failed to do, he will find and save his family. Paul is the one who was wrong, I understand why he was sad and why he was drunk but his reaction was totally out of place. Teleportation was a natural disaster, that's what everyone thinks, Paul blamed Ruddeus for not trying to find his family and only thought of him and had fun like on vacation. First of all, no matter how advanced Ruddeus was as a child, he should not have such high expectations of a child. Ruddeus was teleported to the demonic continent where he knew no one, was full of dangers, and had Eris with him. When he was teleported, Ruddeus was Eris's teacher and tutor, and one of his responsibilities was to take care of Eris, so Ruddeus did his best to take Eris home safely. Their life was not easy, they went through many problems and often they were in danger of death, they were fighting for survival, they had no money, they had nothing to eat so Ruddeus did not have time to think about his family, in addition he had no reason, from what he knew the explosion (teleportation) was out of town when he caught them, he didn't know how big the explosion was and that the whole city(continent) was engulfed in the explosion. Paul blamed Ruddeus for not reading the message to the adventurers' guild, there are a lot of reasons why he couldn't, one of them being that they had problems with some members while they were on the demonic continent or that they had other problems more important at that time than to go through the guild. And of all the people, is Paul talking about women? What did Paul tell Ruddeus that he would not let anyone know because Ruddeus wanted to spend time with Eris and not be bothered by help? Paul seriously? He just found himself talking, he's not even a good father, he almost ruined his family when he cheated on his beautiful wife with the housekeeper Ruddeus was also wrong in that discussion, but Paul is the one who started the quarrel.

There are so many things to remember for this reunion too. 1. You do remember Rudy went to live with the Greyrat's years before this teleport accident happened. So Paul have not seen Rudy growing up at all and his last memory of his son was when he knocked him out and threw in the carriage with Ghislaine. 2. At this point we have no idea what Paul has been going through as we have only seen from Rudy's point of view. (I am trying to say these from first impressions as I do have manga knowledge). 3. My opinion (first time reading this) in this situation both are wrong and both were correct. It's just badly handled situation and instantly blaming Paul just because he looks like that is just first impressions making all your decisions on Paul. Modern parenting logic shouldn't apply here as literally Paul's character isn't from our world. 4. Rudy in a sense is mentally still adult with his own psychological problems and baggage from his past life. ps. You really have forgiven Rudy, but you are now ranting about Paul's issues without any forgiveness or understanding his situation? =) Mushoku Tensei's greatness is in that the characters aren't perfect and they have flaws and react to situations like a real person would react if they were like that character.

Saskatchatoon24

I commented on Twitter this morning and I just wanna clarify that I believe Paul is outta line as a parent here, but my opinion might be skewed because I’ve read both the light novel and manga and those sources focus on how Rudy notices the look of disgust and disappointment on Paul’s face which can’t be good for a growing boy; and even though Rudy is a full grown man his mindset is stunted like that of a manchild.

Jerid Glasspoole

The real question is why did Rudy not even think to let people know he was ok wen he was at the adventures guild. Plus if he looked around he seen posting from his dad. But no he was enjoying his trip home a little to much that is a fact. From A LN reader's point of view.

Jerid Glasspoole

As a Parent Its a rule that my kids always call in and keep me knowing what your up to. I be pissed at Rudy for not trying to get ahold or send a message from the adventure guild. He could have done that but he decided on his own not to.

Foxfire

I'm gonna go with everyone is shitty here. They are both in the wrong. Paul is a shitty parent and Rudy is a shitty son. This is the same shit he pulled in his last life skipping his parents funeral to jerk off. It was super telling that he asked about the kid he wanted to molest instead of his family.

SolitaryLark

I really don’t find it constructive or useful to “take sides” in situations like this they both having things they should have done better. Only thing for it really would be for both to accept there shortcomings and be better blaming one or the other is just an unnecessary road block to them both growing and being better in the future.

SolitaryLark

I’m often the voice of reason in work and friend groups so I mostly come at it in a dispassionate way but I get that, that’s not the average persons mind set.

Yaboyrocklee

Oh. I’m often the same but i let lose my thoughts on video. …. Because that’s kinda the outlet. I can rant into the abyss ha. Since i have an audience. I did go ahead and see how that does here. I manage fairly calm when dealing with people though.

SolitaryLark

For the content. Yeah that makes total sense you gotta kinda let go, just go raw with the thought process for content creation flows better. Many people mistake this for faking but it’s just letting go so you have a more pronounced reaction for it to be interesting.

Luke Alba

Yeah situation is shitty all around. Although I don't know how exactly Rudy finding out everyone went missing would have changed any of his actions. There wouldn't have been much he could do practically without regrouping with Paul first anyway so he would have had to take the same route. And what was he supposed to do just ignore all the people he saw suffering along the way and B-line it to Paul? Nah, I think not. On the other hand although Paul was pissed he's a grown ass man lol, be more understanding of your still barely 10 year old kid! And it's not like his past life is giving him years of wisdom, he didn't do anything in that life so he gained no knowledge or experience.

balabala

was paul message spread all over to demon continent as well? i dont think so and they just arrive in Milis so how the heck could Rudy found out about anything.

Molokolulush

Posting this again because it got deleted for some reason. There are NO SPOILERS in this post but this is an opinion of a novel reader in order to give perspective on the situation. I do not reveal anything that is not made apparent in the anime. The reason I made this is because typically a lot of people will side with Rudi and hate on Paul so this is in Paul's defense even though both are wrong. I wrote this for Discord/Reddit discussions but am sharing it here just to offer some perspective. What you need to understand regarding the conflict between Paul and Rudi First of all, many people will immediately take sides in this conflict. I expect Paul to receive more hate than Rudi and that is why I’m making this essay to offer some perspective and help people understand the whole situation better. What is my stance? I’m on the stance that both parties are wrong but I’m more hard on Rudi in this situation and you’ll know why by the end of this essay. Without wasting time or trying to explain everything let me just get straight to the point. Paul is objectively at fault for expecting too much from his son. Rudi is at fault for not caring/being attached to his family. Why is Paul wrong for expecting too much but in perspective it’s understandable? 1. Rudi was a Water Saint at the age of 5 which is unheard of for a human child. It’s 1 in a billion type of achievement. 2. Rudi has acted smart and mature even without his parent’s guidance since young and they always found it bizarre but chalk it down that he was genius or prodigy of some sort. 3. Rudi got a job at the young age of 7. He has actively shown his parents that he wants to take responsibility despite being so young. 4. To Paul, Rudi was such a genius that he drove off Roxy since she didn’t have anything left to teach him. Paul thought that Rudi made Roxy feel insecure. 5. During the incident of Rudi defending Sylphy from the bullies, Rudi used his mental age and experience to prove that Paul was in the wrong and that Paul should have acted better. He was around 5 or 6 at the time. Hence, Paul loves Rudi but feels inferior to him in every aspect. Bonus point: We as the reader know that Rudi isn’t a kid. Well at least not mentally. So we should know that what Paul feels/did was objectively wrong in a normal world setting, but since we have birds eye view of the situation we should acknowledge that Paul was spitting facts. First thing to take note here is that Paul isn’t angry that Rudi didn’t search for displaced people, I mean that is a part of it but not the major issue. The major issue is how Rudi is nonchalant about his family’s safety after a one in a lifetime type of disaster. Points to proof that Rudi didn’t care about his family or was attached to them? - When Rudi and Paul reunited and talked, the first thing Rudi asked was how Sylphiette was before anyone else. Rudi has been teleported to a different continent for over 2 years and has not seen his family for 6 years and the first thing he asked instead of his mother or sisters was Sylphiette. He also told his story like it was a joyful and fun experience rather than a difficult one. In my opinion, the only difficult part of Rudi’s journey was money and Rudi’s ulterior motives of bettering the Superd’s race reputation. - It’s probably not made that apparent in the anime but since the teleport incident, Rudi intended to write a letter to his family stating that he was okay but kept forgetting. In other words, prioritizing other things. Before you go off on a list of excuses, please take not that a letter only takes like 5 minutes to write. He mentioned the need and desire to write a letter 3 times in volume 3 and 4 and even stressed out the importance of it. He also acknowledges that he keeps forgetting about it. - In volume 3 and 4, which is since the Displacement Incident and before the reunion, Rudi has never once thought of his mother and sisters. Not once. Rudi mentions Sylphy in those two volumes and wondered how she was doing. Counterarguments to debunk 1. Rudi is a kid. –Physically yes. Mentally no. Time and time again Rudi has made it apparent that he uses his previous life experience to solve problems and uses that as a basis when interacting with other people. So no. Rudi isn’t a kid when it comes to cognition. Paul doesn’t know this yes, but the achievements and behavior that Rudi has exuded towards Paul without revealing that fact is enough to make him feel inferior and expect more from his child. Or at least expect your child to care for your family. 2. He couldn’t have known how large the scale of the Displacement Incident was. –Well of course you can’t but the main point I’m trying to make is that he isn’t attached to his family and don’t really care about them. Maybe on a superficial level yes but nothing more than that. He didn’t even consider if the event was a large scale one and immediately went to the conclusion that they should be fine. An anomaly like this which is very dangerous at that, isn’t something weird to consider that other people were affected. Buena village is not that far from where Rudi and Eris stayed. It was only a day’s away from horseback. In Rudi’s words it was only a 6-7 hours journey. Let me give you an example. If you hear on the news about an earthquake in a generalized region nearby where your family or loved ones lived, what would be your first thought? Are they okay? What was the magnitude of the earthquake? Were they affected? I need to know if they are safe. These are instinctive thought processes and reactions someone would have if you really cared about someone. Heck, if you heard coronavirus appeared in a general state or country, you’d ask your loved ones if they were okay. It’s the normal reaction. 3. Rudi is reincarnated so of course he wouldn’t be as attached to his parents than normal people. – This is a very valid point but what I ask of Rudi is not attachment towards them but some gratefulness or decency. When you don’t see your family for 6 years, why ask about Sylphy and not your family first. Why delay the writing of the letter for so long. And finally why not think of Zenith and your sisters. He just isn’t attached to them but the issue is that you don’t even need to see them in a familial light. Zenith was the one who took care of him when he reincarnated, gave him food, a place to stay, encouraged him to learn magic. Just by decency alone, Rudi should have worried for Zenith and his sisters. 4. Rudi had it rough. –Rudi did not have it rough. He had advice from a God to help him throughout his journey, he had Ruijerd help him and carry him in terms of combat. The only tough part was money and betterment of Superd’s reputation. The former can be done easily but to achieve both is what is difficult. This was Rudi’s choice and he wasn’t forced to do it. Yes, it was a noble one but at least have that same nobility and worry towards your supposed loved ones as well. Conclusion The takeaway here isn’t that one side is wrong over the other. No, both parties are wrong period. Both parties are equally wrong in a general non bird eye view of the situation. For example, from Ruijerd POV, it would seem they are both equally wrong, but can we say the same for us? We know who Rudi really is and we know what he has thought (source readers) and been through. We should acknowledge that Paul was actually spitting but he doesn’t have the right to say that. Who does? We as the reader and viewers do. This also isn’t the time to be defending Rudi because this scene/moment is very pivotal towards his actual character development in the future. Acknowledging that is what makes his development/payoff worthwhile. If he was a saint here, then it wouldn’t mean anything in the future.

LDD

Rudy just too self-centered thats all it is

LDD

that comparison to his previous life actually hits the point perfectly

Mikhail

Read your comment in one go. I agree with everything you said. I also take the position that both sides are wrong there. When I read the manga at that moment I was very angry with Paul, but then after weighing opinions of both sides, I realized that it was useless to be angry with him, he was even right about something just like Rudy was.

sincity

Just here to add a comment so i wont have to scroll down too much

Luke Alba

lol do people really think that Rudy is mentally an adult. Just because he was alive for 30 years before he was reincarnated doesn't mean he learned how to live properly. The man was a shut in who was so depressed with life that he didn't even have the desire to go to his own parents funerals. So the whole expecting better from him because of his past life's knowledge makes no sense to me.

In my eyes this is mainly a communication issue. Rudy wants to be cool in front of his dad and of course he is gonna boast about his adventures to his ex-adventuring dad. On top of that, as you mentioned in your reaction, Rudy arrived in the city. Freed Ruijerd, freed slaves, got imprisoned by the Doldia Tribe and was stuck in the forest for a few months, because of the raining season. He never had even the time to look for his dads note On the other side you have Paul, known for his flings and mostly a good for nothing(from rudys perspective), except for fighting. He seems so desperate looking for his 2 wives and second daughter, that he seems to drown himself in alcohol. I mean the teleportation incident happend more than one year ago and he has no news of them, while he and his team seem to rescue people who got enslaved and done who knows what to them. His expectations for his son were too high. He expected him to realize what had happend at home. But he was only in the capital and saw the incident up close. No one would expect a whole region/country?, would be affected from it. Then Rudy, his ace in the hole/his shining star(in his mind), comes along and begins gushing about his wonderful time traveling the demon continent with a beatiful girl in tow. Meeting and helping a famous demon. But not one thought for his family. Anyone in Pauls Position would snap at that moment. A father has lost his whole family except one daughter. I cant imagine the anguish he must be feeling. Because even if they are alive, in what situation are they in? So in short both dont try to understand what happend to the other in the last 18? months or so. They just expected the best from each other. Rudy believes his family is ok and Paul believes his prodigy of a son looks for his mother, maid and sister. Plain and simple communication issues
