Main character's real name is Okabe Rintaro, hence the nickname Okarin (taking the first few letters from his first and last name). Hououin Kyouma is the name of his mad scientist persona. Tuturu girl's real name is Mayuri Shiina, hence why she calls herself Mayushii. She's the one who gives everyone the nicknames meshing their first and last name. Super Hacker's real name is Itaru Hashida, hence the nickname Daru.

Y'all are right that everyone in this cast are weirdos. Moeka just seems to suffer from social anxiety and has confidence issues which is why she prefers to text rather than talk with her voice. You see her have a little anxiety episode in the beginning of the episode after she runs away from the news reporters.

To explain why Okabe didn’t understand right away the message that Makise sent in the D-mail:“Okabe was an … airhead”, is because it was actually in English, not Japanese, and his English isn’t that great (I assume). Though when it shows the message on the phone screen, it’s not unreasonable to just assume that the message that was sent was in Japanese and what’s on the screen is the English subtitles for the message covering up the Japanese.
