So it looks like you guys didn't catch it. There's a reason why Echidna's face was hidden everytime she was shown in the flashbacks (vs the Echidna from the tea party/trial that was always fully shown). We did not see the face of Echidna from the flashback until this episode where Beatrice and Roswaal saw her. If you remember 2 eps ago, when Emilia finished the trial and broke the barrier, she looked at her body and said "who is this? It's supposed to be Echidna", as if she didn't recognize the body there vs the Echidna she saw in the trials. This is a big hint. The significance here is that there are essentially 2 Echidnas. The one we saw in the flashbacks is older in than the one we saw in the tea party/trials, meaning the tea party world was created before the events we saw in the backstory. There are slight personality differences between the two as well (ie. older Echidna from the flashbacks appear to care about Beatrice's well being to a certain extent, whereas younger Echidna from the tea party did not display any concern when Subaru asked her about the contract, probably because Beatrice was created after she was older and hence the one in the tea party did not feel any attachment to beatrice). From this, we can surmise that when Echidna was young, she and the other witches likely created this tea party realm and made a copy of their souls to manage the place. Then the real Echidna continued to grow older, creating Beatrice and the sanctuary along the way. Then she met Roswaal and went through the events we saw in the flashback before eventually falling to Satella. I think this distinction is important because it means the Echidna that is now in Shima's body is the younger version that was from the tea party rather than the one who lived on in the sanctuary.
