Im sure you guys already heard at this point, but the scene of her looking young when there was smoke everywhere was in his head. Due to his depression, he never really SAW her grow up. He always saw her as a kid, which is why he was always shocked at others calling her good looking and said they were a bunch of lolicons. That is also why everything lost its taste. That actually happens to some people when they get really far into depression... everything loses its vibrancy and food is tasteless. So it really hits hard when he finally saw her as an adult and then when he could taste food again... because it shows that he finally had someone who helped him out of the depths of the depression he was in since the betrayal.
