After defeating the white whale last season, Crush+Rem left to go back to the city while Subaru and the rest of the party went to pursue Petelguese (Sloth). The events we saw did not take place at the same time as Subaru's confession to Emilia, it took place well before that. We know this because the reason why Ram received a blank letter was due to the letter being written by Rem and subsequently wiped when she lost her name. And you're right, RBD is not his power, it's a curse. It literally forces him to relive death over and over again for some purpose that is not his. He just happens to piggyback off of it to influence some other things.

Y'all are lucky as hell, not only didn't ya'll see the season 1 finale's after credit scene (where Emilia asks Subaru "Who... is Rem?". Back in the day we had to wait almost 4 years for season 2! LOL
