it "can't" though. They didn't have any of that at the embassy. The girl could be long dead before they have a chance to do that. Also, if the play was a show of force to begin with, the decision to save her there or not wouldn't matter either way. It was a difficult decision to begin with exactly because their agenda isn't too destroy the empire entirely (which we all know they can do)

Exactly he didnt know he'd need that level of force to save her. Sure if this was Itami that would be a valid argument as he is a part of the JSDF and has resources available and his own skill. There's also the issue of running it up the command ladder and can he even request that? Sure the plan is great it just isnt practical in this situation given the people involved and timing of it.

Two things. First, Director's idea of letting the Cleaners take the girl is totally 'negotiating with terrorists'. He's agreeing with the enemies demands. Second, the reason they are not accepting refugees is because it could be grounds for starting a war, but assassinating Imperial citizens on Imperial soil is even more likely to start a war. The enemy knows that the fugitives were at the Jade Palace because they purposefully let them escape there in the first place. If the Cleaners were to suddenly disappear after the Empire knowingly sent them to the embassy would without a doubt force them to send people to overrun the embassy. In return, Japan would respond to that and fight the empire. The way Ambassador Sugawara handled was the quickest and easiest way to save Sherry at th time.

I like Director's version of Catch and Release. All this could be solved with a sniper round or three let alone a B-52 and/or some choppers. They could send them back to the Stone Age 3 times over without reloading. A simple Show of Overwhelming Force would solve this problem.
