In episode 187 we find out Wyper is the descendant of Calgara. That's why the village shaman was telling him about Calgara and Norland. Montblanc Norland's last idea was that it had sunk into the ocean. That's why his descendant Montblanc Cricket was diving for the gold. (and managed to find those golden ingots shaped like bells and the South Bird.) Cricket knows there's Sky Islands made of Island Clouds that can be accessed by the knock up stream, but he doesn't know that Shandora got shot up there.

The flashback character itself can have its own series and we would watch / read it lovingly. Thats how good character stories are in One Piece lol.
