You were almost on the money with explanation for how the chimeras acquired nen ! But a clue for the explanation for this goes back to the Heaven’s Arena Arc. There, Wing-san explained to Gon and Killua that they could learn nen 2 different ways, the long & safe way, or the fast & dangerous way. They opted for the fast way which was to be exposed to nen so their “Micropyles” (Aura Pores) could be opened. Wing used positive nen to do this, and warned that if they were to be exposed by malignant nen attacks, they could suffer serious injuries or even death if their bodies couldnt take the nen (this is how the cripple-trio at heaven’s arena Became crippled in the first way). This last one is how rammot learned nen. His pores were opened by these ill-tended nen attacks

Sorry, circled back up to read. But yeah thats what I love about it so far as well, they build on past principles and I can see how the explanations are REALLY important. I also like how this balanced the show...it's not just Gon and Killua who can take advantage of an upgrade and forced method. Now when we see a character skip steps to upgrade, we can expect the enemy can do the same. It keeps the show fair in a way.
